Basic summary: The producers of System Shock 2 wanted EA to use their SS licence to make a sequel, but EA says they're not interested because they don't think System Shock 3 is going to be popular enough to sell. Since EA doesn't want to give up the license, but won't let anyone else use it, System Shock = dead. What we have instead is a spiritual successor game: Bioshock.

The conversation probably went like this:

"So... Mr. Levine... You want to develop a game with a psychopathic AI bent on proving itself in a futuristic sci-fi setting?

"Yes, that's right."

"And it's not a shooter, you say?"

"Well, it's IN first person, but you see, it's more like an RPG-adventure-shooter hybrid."

"And... it doesn't have Gandalf in it?"

"What? No. Of c..."

"Let me finish, Mr. Levine. AND, it doesn't have John Madden?"

"Wha..."

"INTERRUPT ME AGAIN, Mr. LEVINE, and I'm going to KILL YOUR FAMILY AND EAT YOUR LEGS. So... it's not about World War II either, right?

"..."

"I see, Mr. Levine. I see. Guards, escort this man out of my office please. He's guilty of wasting my time."

So, for those of you System Shock fans that wanted a System Shock 3 made by the same dudes that made the first two, BLAME EA.

Scientists declare that this joke is getting really, really old.

Levine gets full points for being damn accurate, though.

Wow... I didn't know all this. I just thought bioshock came out of nowhere, like that one Riddick game.

EA must be jealous that they lost a good game. Serves them right. :D

Everyone complains about EA all the time, then when they release a game everyone jumps on the band wagon.

Accept it, all developer make crap games, some just have a habit of doing more often than most.

EA isnt a developer, its a publisher. They buy good licenses and developers then let them stagnate and die. It is the EA way.

Question

How can EA possibly come to the conclusion that a system shock 3 will not sell?

My god thats simply retarded.

You must have been the very last person to hear about this, Mithie.

Summary:
EA decides what does and doesn't happen with its IP.
EA makes a decision we don't like.
World ends!
We end up with a similar game containing none of the actual IP but will probably play quite similarly to System Shock.
Yay.
