View Full Version : Boredom - the greatest evil facing mankind?
Forget superbugs, asteroid impacts, nuclear annihilation in my opinion there is a far worse evil out there - boredom.
Though my own experience, bored people do stupid things. Boredom makes people do stupid things. Stupid things can lead to accidents, violence and all sorts. Boredom can cause insanity, and cause the mind to degrade in a slow near painfull fashion.
Closer to reality, boredom is why I am posting this thread.
So what do you think, is the true cure for it, from your own experience?
How will will be curing boredom in the future?
Why do we even get bored?
I lack answers for all those questions, anyone else got an answer(s)?

The true cure for boredom is getting off your friggin' arse and finding something to do, and the drive for this must come from within you. The worst possible thing a bored person can do is complain that they're bored - it just makes them look like a six-year-old on a rainy day. The best possible thing a bored person can do is exercise.
I have no idea how Will cures boredom. I don't know how he thinks.
We get bored as an evolutionary engine that drives creativity and increases health. It's your mind's and body's way of shouting "Stimulate me! I need something different to do, and am falling apart here!". Studies have shown that a modicum of stress in a person's life actually extends their lifespan and increases their overall health - we are not good at having nothing pressing on our plates.

Personally, I'm more scared of daleks than having a little freetime on my hands.

Look at this dalek, no doubt the vanguard of a much larger invasion fleet, guarding it's human captives behind their quadrosonicglass walls. Little knowing in only a few seconds they will be exterminated by his gun cunningly disguised as an EGG WHISK.
Everyone run for the stairs, we'll be safe.

I remember when I was little, I was watching Dr.Who, and I saw the Daleks, and thought they were like R2D2. Then they meltified somebody, and me->trauma.

Dalek: "Your capability of hearing in the upper registers after listening to this, possibility of ever again liking an english accent, and belief that not all science fiction on serialized television is rampantly cheesy... will be exterminated... exterminated... exterminated..."

Right, moving back to topic....
Boredom - The result of people who have everything they ever wanted in their lives but just want more.
Example, you buy something that you wanted to have for a long time then after a few days you get.....BORED!
The best way to prevent boredom is to keep yourself motivated, do something exciting everyday that you know wont bore you out 10 minutes later. Boredom gets worse when you have about 2 weeks off (which I have at the moment), you'll try anything to prevent it but eventually it'll catch up with you and swallow you whole! :argh:
I don't think that there is a long-lasting cure, we just have to live with it, cope with it and try to prevent it.

Boredom - The Lazy person's excuse for why they aren't gettin off their arse and doing something like Retro said.
Boredom - Having too much time on your hands. Go get a job.
Boredom - An excuse to whine about something. :p
