View Full Version : Old ATi stutter bug?

Forgive me if this has already been asked, but I'm short on time, the search function does not seem to want to work, and I'm hoping for an answer before I have to leave to work.

I use a Radeon 9800 Pro. Does anybody know if the ATi driver stuttering bug has been solved, either by updated ATi drivers or by a patch? Back when I still played, the only solution for many was to roll back your driver versions, but I don't want to roll back 1-2 years for one game, when I play many newer games that benefit from newer drivers. With the upcoming release of Dark Crusade I find myself wanting to get back into the series, but if the stuttering bug is still around I'm afraid I just won't bother. :( I gave away my original copies of DoW and WA to my brother when I grew tired of the bug the first time, so purchasing the original game plus both expansions is an expensive proposition if there's a chance the game will not work as it should.

I have downloaded the Dark Crusade demo and spent some time playing it, and it seems to be running fine. But I am not sure if this means the game will still run fine once DoW + (especially) Winter Assault are brought back into the equation.

Thank you in advance for any information. :)

Did you update to 1.51 for WA? That fixed it for me, at least.

I used to run WA on an old 9800 SE with no problems whatsoever.. so i dont really see that you should have any problems. i still use an ATi card now (X850) and ive never had any stuttering issues of any kind... hope this gives you some reasurance :talk:

I started playing DoW on a Radeon X800 and never experienced any problems. On my new computer (which runs a Radeon X1900XT) I haven't experienced a single problem.
So I'm gonna guess that the bug's been fixed

To demonicbadger: I am unsure which patch version was the current one at the time, I quit 2-3 months after WA was first released, if I recall correctly. I remember the game ran fine for me until I tried to play online and patched it, it was the patch that caused the problem for many people, I think? Regardless, if a newer patch fixed it, that is excellent. :)

To Myth!c and aueda: The bug did not affect all ATi users, I think it was mostly limited to those using older cards, so I'm not surprised that an X850 is not giving you any problems (a friend of mine used an X850 as well, and he never had the issue). But the fact Myth!c played on a 9800 SE without any problems does reassure me. :)

Thank you all for your information and once again thank you in advance to anybody else who posts, I just want to be sure the issue is resolved before I drop 100+ dollars for all the games.

Yeah, 1.5 introduced the 'stutter bug' as you say. Just log in online and download the latest patch, it should fix it. The stuttering in 1.5 was so bad, I couldn't even stand to play it.

By the way, I am running on a 9700, but I think the 9800 was just a beefed up version of mine, they should function nearly identical.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I was running OLD drivers for a very long time so I could play WA with my 9800 Pro. As of now however, I'm on the latest drivers/patch and am having no problems.

Netframework 2.0 Fixed some ppls stuttering bugs with the Skirmish AI mod, dunno if it would help but worth a shot.
Couldnt hurt to try with the old stutter bug might be related somehow.
Hope it works out for ya.

i use an ATI X700 Mobility Radeon PCI-Express card on my laptop and i have never experienced any stuttering.

I'm pretty sure that if you pick up Dawn of War Anthology (DOW + WA + DC all on DVD), it will cost less than $100. It will retail in the UK for around £30...that's around $60-$65.
