Direct Connect & LAN simulatanously?

I often play WA with a friend in another state. I host the game and he joins. For some reason it will not work the other way. Other times my brother and I play on the LAN in our home, again I host this time because his computer sucks.

Is there a way for me to direct host a game and the two of them to direct join it?

Yes, using third-party software. Go to http://www.hamachi.cc, download and install the client and use it to set up a virtual private network.
