ok so i know that u ppl are most likely getting tired of me and all, but i got pre-order DC at gamestop last month in all and i was wondering will i be able to choose if i want DVD or CD-rom? i think i got a DVD-rom in my pc now, but im not sure. But my comp does play DVD movies. so does that mean, i will be able to play the DVD version too?

I bought Company of Heros two days ago and it was DVD, and i would get like a third of the way installing it and it said that i had some error with subtitles, and movies, and sandlot or whatever. so i dunno, just plz fill me in. thx

If you have a DVD player it will say so on the front of your player. It's a logo of a little disc with the word DVD across it. I think all DVD players have that but I could be wrong.

If you dont have a DVD rom then you (i think) wouldn't even be able to read DVD cds.

A DVD-ROM drive will be required to install a game from a DVD. (Not a DVD cd.. that doesn't make sense.. they aren't CDs.. they are DVDs..)

If you don't have a DVD-ROM drive.. just buy one mkay? They are cheaper than floppy drives these days. In fact you can buy DVD writers for super cheap.. (~20USD)

That's how it normally is. For some reason people in the USA are still too stupid to deal with DVD games. I hate it, because the stores around here always end up carrying the CD versions..... I've had a DVD-ROM drive for 5 years why can't I ever use it for games instead of 20 CDs....

EDIT- did these threads get combined? Because I know I didn't double post....

well on my PC there is the logo of the DVD sign and it says 'DVD r/rw' is that it? is that a DVD-rom drive?

It'll be a good future investment to get a DVD drive anyway.

I will never forget my experience with UT2004's 6-CD installation.

yes it is....

I dont get how people can not have DVD Roms at this stage in the game. It's absolutely ludicrous that PC game publishers still have to put out CDs (save crappy budget titles that only fit on 1 CD anyways). if your computer is advanced enough to run this game then you should have no problems being able to afford a less than 20 dollar DVD rom drive.

I had a DVD for that and hated how long it took to install...

My question: Are DVD installations generally 'faster' than normal CD-ROM ones?

lol im sure eliminating the process of having to swap out 6 CDs saves at least a minute right there.

Unless you have an incredibly slow DVD drive, installing from one DVD would be MUCH faster than from 6 CDs. Common sense really - only one disc to use, instead of 6.

I don't think they're necessarily faster, but they're less of a hassle since you don't have to switch discs. And you can do something like read the manual while the DVD installs.

But the better advantage of DVDs, imo, is that it's easier to keep one DVD in a proper case in storage than to keep 6 or more CDs in paper slips.

I wouldn't even mind so much if it took the same amount of time. I can do something else while it is installing. With the 6 CD thing you pretty much have to stay near your computer until it is installed.

Edot, you do realize that this got answered in the OTHER thread (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=113205) you made in the tech help thread about the exact same thing? It was answered, and very clearly at that, by TBS.

Hell, he addressed your issue about NINE HOURS before you MADE this thread. I guess you have a really, really bad memory or something.

Threads merged.

There are 2 versions of dark crusade. A PC-DVD version and a PC-CD version. If you have a CD-ROM you cannot play the PC-DVD version, you cannot even install it, HOWEVER if you have a PC-DVD-ROM you can play the PC-CD version. Check on the box or where you order it from what version of the game you are getting.

How is it that a computer powerfull enough to play Dark Crusade does not have a dvd player? Every computer for the last 4 years is built with one.

Shinova

Every computer for the last 4 years is built with one.

Tell that to the hordes of HL1 Counterstrike kiddies who still play that game on their old Counterstrike machines.

Or similarily, the bunches of people who still use Windows 98 cause they hate Microsoft but are too lazy to use Linux or a Mac.

I don't have the money I had back then to afford one we barely have enough to buy food let alone pay rent. I'm not gonna buy some cheap dvd rom that will prob run slower than my cd rom when I can buy a cd rom version.

I built mine from scratch btw.

Wow I guess that settles it, I'm going to buy a DVD :) Thnx guys :D

How many CD-ROMs would that have been, anywho?

Well since patch 1.5 DoW does not need a cd and its the same with company of heroes. I am fairly sure its the same case with DC.

One thing I like that Relic is doing with this... is that they aren't charging us extra for DVD. We have a choice. Most publishers now are still charging for a collector's or special edition that has the game on DVD, provided you pay a little bit more or reserve before a certain date. Everyone else is stuck with CDs or digital distribution...

dublo7
10th Oct 06, 12:44 AM
I believe they will be the same price.

Harkonnen
10th Oct 06, 12:45 AM
A collector's edition is more expensive because of the extra content usually added, not because it happens to be on DVD instead of cd.

@OP, If you don't have a DVD-Rom/DVD+RW drive by now you should really think about grabbing one. They are so cheap its silly.

i remember reading a while back when another game by another company was released the reason why america get a cd and dvd release is that they are obliged by law to do so. we in europe get the spankingly great DVD release.

Just asking. It's obvious we need a DVD drive to read DVDs, however, i am curious whether there is a change in the installation pattern? So i put the DVD inside the DVD drive and it will auto-run per normal like installation for CD-Rom games?

Btw, it's not something new seeing games in DVD. I kind of expected it as games are getting more complicated and require better installer with a bigger size. It's also scary knowing you installed proggy will take up a larger space then you Rom, hence imagine how big a file DC may be.

Yes. A DVD drive behaves exactly like a CD drive. 'xcept it reads CD's and DVD's :)

I pre-order DC via Gamestop com and got it today (overnight shipping). It's a DVD-rom.

It wasn't made in a CD-Rom format, its only DVD. So you'll have to wait till you get a new computer like me ;/
