View Full Version : Minor but frustrating problem with DoW

Ok, I thought I posted this in one thread few days ago, but I was in hurry and now I found out that I actually posted nothing.

So, I'm having a little but extremely frustrating problem. When I'm playing DoW/WA everything happens just fine at the beginning of the game but the more units and squads there is on the map the more lagging and slow the game comes. And I really don't want ANY lag or sticky animations etc with this comp:

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519)
Language: English (Regional Setting: Finnish)
System Manufacturer: FUJITSU SIEMENS
System Model: D1627-G
BIOS: Version 5.00 R2.04.1627.02
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 1022MB RAM
Page File: 236MB used, 2224MB available
Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode

I tried to play with the minimum settings, it's a bit better but it still starts slowing down after about 6+ squads are firing at each other. This all happens 1v1 vs computer. I don't know what the hell is matter with my comp. I've tried to ask advice, but after typical "scan computer, update drivers" they usually just say "I dunno then". And with DC coming I'd like my computer to run as smoothly as it can.

Oh, and the lag isn't like online lag, where you don't see units or mouse moving. This lag is like that the game begins to slow down when something happens (the more stuff there is on the screen the more it slows down, sometimes even enough running squads can cause slowing). For example: SM squads are firing the enemy, everything goes fine, I can see the yellow bullets flying all over the place, but when more stuff comes to the screen the game slows down and I no longer see bullets on the move. I just get a new picture about 1-4 times a sec where I can see the bullet "movement".
And I'd like to point out that the game isn't unplayable at all (except larger 3v3, 4v4 games, playable but pretty horrible) but I really can't enjoy the game as much as I could.

This was a straight copy paste from a thread which got locked. I already got some advice, like:
".....try going to Personal computer> control panel> System> advanced> then click the settings button below the performance section. Then advanced, press the change button at the bottom. Then put the dot to the place where it says "Let the OS configure the size" (or something like that, don't have english OS so im not sure about some of the words). Then ok and reboot..."
and
".....you might want to go to www.srtest.com and run a check for a random game, the information you get there is more relevant for gaming purposes than DxDiag....".
These didn't help me. Next I was being given advice about how many programs I have running and how much memory they take. But then mods locked the thread, so I continue from that point.

When I have only windows task manager and this forum open I have 41 processes running and mem usage varies from 16K to 24 500K. Average memory usage (other than those 16k and 25 000k programs) is like 4000-7000K.

Any help? :(

And mods, I know what DoW requires to run smoothly, I have checked the FAQ. As I stated before my computer should be able to run DoW at full settings with ease, but it doesn't.... So please don't lock this. I really need some help and FAQ can't help me in this.

PS. Sorry for the long copy paste post. I'm so tired and wanted to post this thread before I go to sleep.

Try the solution I posted here (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?p=1809229#post1809229) for slowdowns that I was experiencing in DoW, it seems to be some kind of bug in DoW as there is no reason for DoW to run slowly on beefy machines.

Hmm, I thought I saw some signs of DoW running better when I did what you suggested jamie, but that was just my imagination. :(
Nothing happened. I tried with full and minimum settings. It still slows down after about 5 min. No matter is it full or minimum it slows down just as much.

This is the thing I really hate with computers and comp games. There is always some mysterious unrepairable problem which ruins the fun. At least on my comp. :( :(

Ok, I think I'm on the brink of solution. I found nice little thread from the troubleshooting forum and it told me this:

Problem: On some systems the game will run very slowly as soon as a few units show up on the screen, even though that system may exceed the recommended requirements.

Solution: This can by caused by ATI's Vsync feature. Disabling it should fix the slowdowns.
To disable this feature follow these steps:

1. Right-click on an empty spot on your desktop, and select "properties" from the menu
2. Select the "settings" tab
3. Click on "advanced"
4. Select the ATI 3D TAb
5. Select "Use custom settings", then click on the "custom" button
6. At the bottom of the window you will notice a slider labelled "Wait for Vertical Sync". Slide it all the way to the left until the setting reads "off".
7. Click on "Ok"

But I still have one funny problem. There is no "ATI 3D TAb" under advanced button. The only options I have are General, Adapter, Monitor, Troubleshoot and Color management. I clicked all of them, looked carefully, double checked, but I found no 3d tab.

Goddamnit I feel so stupid crybaby. :(

Ok, I downloaded the newest driver and Catalyst Control Center. Wow! I found that "3D tab" from catalyst control center, and I found "wait for vertical sync" part too!

Wohoo! All my slowdown problems are gone! Ok, let's slide the vertical sync to off. Let's boot, just for sure... Ok, let's play!! Wohoo! Seems to play well, 1 squad is out, no slowdowns... 2nd squad... Firefight with the enemy... Uuh, what the f***?? The game still slows down just as it did before swithing the vertical sync off! I am so confused. Even the direct piece of advice from the troubleshoot forum didn't remove the problem.

I know nothing I could do anymore. :( :weep: :?:

Go to your system BIOS (hit F something on boot...possibly F8) and deactivate Hyperthreading, DoW should now run smoothly.

40 000th WHiner
18th Oct 06, 12:54 PM
That's what they claim in every piece of advice TBS. ;)

Anyway, I think deactivating hyperthread did something. Now the game has periods for running smoothly and slowly. I counted that the game runs smoothly 3-5 seconds and after that it slows down and is sticky for the next 3-5 sec, then again 3-5 sec smooth gameplay etc.
Actually I can't say am I happier or not, because when the game now begins to slow down, it comes REALLY sticky. Much worse than before deactivating hyperthread. On the other hand, now I'm having much more smooth gameplay. Now if I could eliminate that sticky gameplay once and for all I'd be Happy. I think this is on the brink of solution. :)

Do you guys have any more tricks in your sleeves?

Oh, and is it anyhow possible to get DoW run smoothly by "combining" advice I've got?

For example, I've got advice: deactivate write combining, set vertical sync off, deactivate hyperthreading etc.
Could DoW run smoothly by "combining" these somehow. Like: write combining enabled and the rest deactivated, hyperthreading deactivated all the rest activated etc.?

You could certainly experiment.

40 000th WHiner
19th Oct 06, 3:09 PM
Ok, I experienced about all combos with no effect. I also tried older drivers, just for sure. Nothing. It seems I'm doomed to play sticky DoW for the rest of my life. :fright:

Oh yeah, and I have tried to reinstall the game too. And don't even suggest about formating C or something like that. I did it just some months ago.

Should we now make a sticky thread to the troubleshoot forum about a mystical slowdown problem that can't be fixed? :p

TBS
19th Oct 06, 3:11 PM
hmm, do you have lots of software running in the background or something? Deactivate anything you dont need and try again.

40 000th WHiner
20th Oct 06, 1:32 AM
Hmm, I was like "HAH! Yeah sure, my little "games" window is making DoW sticky." I don't know if it was by shutting every single open program (I usually have just my "games" folder open when I play, but now I shut that too) or something else, but it did something. Sure the game still slows down (surprise) but now the sticky-smooth-sticky-smooth periods are faster. About 2 sec smooth - 2 sec sticky gameplay etc.

20th Oct 06, 3:42 AM
Hmm, I read this thread all over again, checked some things and finally noticed that I actually don't have that "wait for vertical sync" part in my catalyst control center at all. I do have "wait for vertical REFRESH" but not "wait for vertical sync". Does this matter, are those things the same?

I think they are the same. Besides I don't have "wait for vertical sync" anywhere.

have you tried increasing your page file size?

all this slowing down seems like a memory problem to me. try doubling your page file.

---
another thing to try is a good antivirus tool. some viruses can seriously slow down your computers performance, and yet are undetected by your antivirus. don't tell me you scanned it. cos your scan can miss things.

try trendmicro housecall. it's free.

i was using mcafee, but my pc was being weird and going slow, so I tried using housecall, and something made the program crash. and most downloads would crash mid way too. i scanned with mcafee, and it found a few things and cleared them, but that didn;t solve the problem. I downloaded spyware doctor, ran it, and it found about 10 HIGH RISK TROJANS that macafee hadn't found. after clearing them the computer worked much better. and mcafee was set to auto update, so it wasn;t out of date. it was just rubbish.

20th Oct 06, 4:04 AM
Whoa, well actually I AM using Mcafee jon. :D My engineer uncle has assured me so many times it's damn good so I took it. But I've sometimes doubted it's efficiency since it has NEVER found anything.

By the way how do you increase page file size? Never done that before.

Pukkun
20th Oct 06, 11:49 AM
Maybe it's smoke or many other transaprent billboards/sprites on screen.
Servitors are a good example, or the Seer Council with Mysticism , they emit a lot of smoke/dust on max settings.
I guess you also have a new and fast GFX Card? Go look in your settings for something like Transparency Anti-Aliasing, and turn it off.
I think it's on Supersampling on default, which means render the transparent object in twice or four times it's size and shrink it down. (IIRC)

Hm...

40 000th WHiner
27th Oct 06, 9:00 AM
I doubled the page file size. Tried to halve it too. No effect. Or, well, it did something because the computer became slow as hell. The game slowed down a bit also.
I downloaded Spyware doctor and after scan it said there's 120 low risk cookies or other little bastards. But it won't remove them, I have to buy it for cleaning the comp. So I went to the folder where those cookies were and deleted them manually, but still SD claims they are there.

I tried trendhouse too. I don't know why but it shuts down after it has scanned my comp for about 2-4 min and says nothing. Tried again, the same. Again, it shuts down. Hmm.

Pukkun I have no new components in this computer. I got this about 2 years ago and every piece is from that year. This computer was bought second hand after this had been used in one game tournament. And this is "perfect for playing". Hah, don't know about that.

I found no transparency anti aliasing, but I found anti aliasing without that transparency + adaptive anti aliasing. :p It seems I can't turn AA off, only slide it from 2X to 6X and "Let the application decide" + "Temporal anti-aliasing". Adaptive can be turned off. Going to try it now.

While playing I spotted few things. Propably been there for a while already but now I saw them. Some details are strangely twisted and look very ugly. For example when I look banner on SP half of it can't be seen at all, and the other half looks a bit weird. When I zoom close all details become normal. When I zoom away they twist again. After a game I played few mins ago I noticed space marine bodies are twisted like that too, and they remain like that even when I zoom in.

UPDATE
Turning adaptive AA off did nothing. And I noticed all other bodies are strangely twisted also and won't come normal when zoomed.

I think this has nothing to do with game's stickyness, but something about video settings etc. When I start the game and watch those intro videos they don't run smoothly. I could actually say that sometimes they really lag. 85-95% of the time they run smoothly but that 5-15% is some nasty looking, non-dynamic and "lagging" video.
Sorry I can't explain it so well at english. But I think you know what I mean when video does not run as it is meant to.

Ok I tried to experiment if DoW run properly with our 2nd computer and installed the game. It's not as good as this comp but DoW ran perfectly with it.

Very strange, I dont see any reason why it should work fine on the second PC but not the first.

Yeah, strange indeed. I think I've tried everything. And I remember that DoW worked correctly once. I don't remember was it 6 months or one year ago, but it worked fine back then.

My father is offering to take my comp to repairing as I told him how this sucks. But I declined as there isn't any real problem in my computer. Only some hideous, retarted and twisted setting/minor problem that just doesn't allow DoW to run properly.

I started to think could that same thing affect other games, like WC3, as well? I mean that when I play big games (3v3, 4v4) in WC3 with my friends EVEN THAT 4 YEARS OLD WC3 starts lagging and slowing when enough stuff comes to screen. It's not like DoWs stickyness, it's real lag when every player is hacking each other at the same time. But I don't think it is because of the internet as my connection is 2048 kbps cable modem.

And as there isn't any more advice (seems so) I started to make some wild guesses. As "Could some other programs do something to DoW?" etc. Maybe I should start uninstalling those programs I don't need and see if it helps... (Desperate isn't it :()

Well in that case I would format the harddrive and reinstall windows (then remember the other fixes we talked about earlier in the thread - those things may still cause issues).

Err, would love to, BUT I formated computer just about 3 months ago. x)

But, oh well. If nothing is going to help I consider that.

Hmm. I took my display driver off from my computer and switched it with our 2nd computer's driver. With that "worse" computer DoW runs perfectly even with my comp's driver. And vice versa, with my computer DoW is still sticky even after driver switch. So the problem is in the comp. :rage:

I just come to thought that I've never updated my BIOS. Don't even know how to do that. And I was told that unupdated BIOS causes many problems. Could that be the culprit?

Otherwise I think I need to take that worse computer if I'm going to play DoW.

I'm having performance problems myself. I can drop it down to the absolute lowest resolution, video & sounds options, but when there's a lot of units on screen, my fps drops pretty bad. It's not horrible but would be much better without it. Runs flawless even at max settings until a lot of units are on screen.

I've got the latest drivers and all that jazz. I posted my dxdiag and warnings log in my thread but no-one's posted in it. I've tried everything I've seen in the threads and every video option combination possible. Vsync & AA are off. No problems in other games so it's confusing. Maybe the code isn't optimized for certain hardware but that's just a wild guess.

That's sad Dzhel. :(

I could tolerate clear and honest problems, for example: some serious virus(es) in the comp, bad driver or computer overall etc. But I absolutely !!!!HATE!!!! these problems that cannot be solved! Computer says everything runs properly and smoothly, and when I play I got shitty gameplay which makes my computer look like 2x worse than it actually is! :mean:

Anyway I'm going to buy DC now. Although I'm not playing it untill I get this solved. :mean: I just read "The Fucking Manual!". ;)

Ok, I don't need to stress my mind anymore with my Mysterycomp. Dad took it to the repair yesterday. It's taking 2-3 days so I'm not getting my comp *cough coughDCcough cough* untill next week. :( :weep: :lonely:

I'm also thinking it's a memory problem, possibly caused by viruses or spyware running while you're trying to play.

I personally hate McAfee with a passion and I don't recommend Norton, either. I have been using AVG free since I got this computer and have never had any problems.

I also recommend downloading AdAware by Lavasoft. That should clean up any spyware that is slowing your system down by running in the background.

Other than that, just make sure you have as many things closed while you play as you can. Any running programs will also be using your memory that could be spent making DoW run smoothly.

I've always used AdAware. It's a great program. ;)

The guys in that computer store told that there might be some very old virus which was and is still undetected by my virus scanners. I'm not so sure if this is true. Because as I said before I formated my computer some months ago (because of the DoW stickyness) with no positive results. I really hope they find that problem. I-WANT-TO-PLAY-DARK-CRUSADE!!! :boohoo:

I'm still thinking it's a virus.

but if spyware doctor didn;t detect any major ones then I'm a bit surprised.

4th Nov 06, 1:40 AM
Doctor found "only" 120 low risk cookies. Adaware finds cookies as well as doctor (not as much, but it finds them every time I scan) and ad actually REMOVES them unlike doc. And as the doc. said "buy this product to remove infections!" I'm really suspicious. I've had "cheating" programs before which claim they found "497 SERIOUS SUPERHYPER HIGH RISK INFECTIONS!!!111" and told I have to buy it for removal. I never trust those programs.

Shit I want to play DC.

jon_the_d

well, I trusted spyware doctor cos it had really good reviews. but still, if it didnt find any high risk then maybe there are none. you tried housecall?

Okay, computer is coming today (if they didn't lie with that 2-3 days, it's 3rd day now) and my precious DC copy is waiting me on my table. (It's frustrating when you have a magnificent game but you can't play it...). I'm crossing my fingers that they repaired the problem. They took my DoW and WA copies too so I think they can test if it works and got it fixed. :)

The point of this post? There is none. I just wanted to unload my frustration. I'll tell you what the problem was if they found it.

Unbeliveable... Those computer store guys still haven't got my comp fixed!! "2-3 days", tomorrow it's a week when I took my computer there. O_O

40 000th WHiner
8th Nov 06, 12:07 PM
The guys from the store called us today and said that the display driver is the culprit. It's not designed for playing. They asked could they order new driver from Sweden (cheaper in there) and now the bill is 160 euros higher.

I MAY get the computer back next friday.... :grumble: If not, then I get it next week as they are closed at weekends. :(
One another weekend without... umm... well let's say:
One another weekend with DC but with inability to play it. :(

I'm a bit suspicious about that "bad driver" thing. Because as I said the game works perfectly even with that driver when I switch it to this computer. The game has also played fine with that driver in the past. I think it has something to do with my comp's other parts (although I haven's changed any parts in my computer). It doesn't work well with them. But then again, that driver should be capable to run DoW fine. We shall see what they are going to tell us...

TBS
8th Nov 06, 12:18 PM
Im also suspicious...plus why would they need to order a driver? Drivers are things you just download - and I dont know of any that cost money.

Dzhel
8th Nov 06, 5:27 PM
That's completely strange. Just like TBS has said, I've never heard of a driver that needs to be ordered or paid for.

I worked for a computer repair shop for a couple months (didn't like it) and they would pull some shady tricks to screw people out of money. Most common was if they had a software problem they couldn't figure out quickly, they'd just tell the customer they needed to backup, wipe, and reinstall everything which was a package deal that cost more.

Not saying this is the case with you but be careful, make sure you get specific answers to your questions, and get some documentation about exactly what they did if you aren't happy with the results.

40 000th WHiner
8th Nov 06, 11:30 PM
Oh, I don't mean we have to pay for downloaded driver, but for display driver CARD. I'm not that stupid I would pay for something I can download for free. ;)

Yeah I think I'm going to ask them some nasty little questions about why the heck was my previous driver (card) so bad. I warned my dad about the possibility of getting cheated and that they just want "a bit" more money. As he is the one who is paying this thing. I can't afford 240 euros with my student income (0 euros). :p

What graphics card do you have, btw?

TBS
9th Nov 06, 5:09 AM
He has a radeon 9600.

If it has a fault then it would certainly explain this problem...but I would like to think that they have tested with another card (any card would do) before ordering a new one.

40 000th WHiner
9th Nov 06, 7:07 AM
They wouldn't need to test it with other card because I tested it already and came to conclusion that there's nothing wrong with the card and I told it them too!

TBS
9th Nov 06, 9:15 AM
Well just be sure that they demonstrate to you that theyve fixed the problem before you hand over any money then.

40 000th WHiner

They called that the computer is ready and we can go to get it. But as I was in the gym my dad went to get it.

Aaah what a lovely feeling when I see Winter Assault's order's 1st campaign mission video runs perfectly (I used it as a test, if it runs smoothly then everything is OK).

I installed Dark Crusade and chose Necrons. 1st mission goes well, but in the end when there's 3 warrior squads, wraith and lord + some random orks on the screen I can see tiny tiny slowing and stickyness. I don't know why, but I forgived it and moved to the second mission. There I had full nice little army and I had to destroy all buildings. When I had grouped my army and moved them I experienced my worst fear: same shitty stickyness and lagging as before the "repair". I put all settings as low as I could and tried again. Nothing.

Bye bye 240 euros and smooth gameplay. I'm so tired and angry with this shit... :|

Maybe I just give up and forget the whole DoW as I can't enjoy it like this. -.-

Sorry to hear that man.

Only thing I can think of is maybe pick up some more RAM. Even though a gig should be fine, you just never know. 2 gigs helped me get rid of stutter in other games.

I had the same "sticky" problem only once while playing DC when I loaded up a saved game from attacking the chaos stronghold. I never had the "sticky" problem until that point so it was wierd and nothing would get rid of it. I had to restart the level and the "sticky" went away and hasn't come back. Definitely strange.

Hope you get it worked out soon.

Nope, nothing helps. I was told that maybe my computer is too hot (lol, after 3 minutes?) so I opened the comp, took it out from the computer's actual place to the floor and placed my fan right next to it to blow with full power. No effect. Sticky and laggy.

My dad came to see how it was sticky and said "I see no difference, maybe you just demand too much." I looked at him mouth wide open with awe and told that I surely don't demand too much. Then my dad said that maybe that's part of the game. Maybe every single guy has that same stickyness and lagging. This absolutely stunned me. My father who hasn't played a single hour in his life comes to tell me how it is normal for games to be sticky and that I am wrong and too demanding.

I experimented WA too and it has the same lag as before. Only difference is that now the sticky gameplay/smooth gameplay is like 30/70 or 40/60 for the smooth.

Hell not I'm going to pay 240 euros for 10-30% smoother gameplay!!! Next monday I'm going to get my money back straight away when the store opens!

So. My computer was formated, everything was updated, no viruses or other shit, new display driver card. And still sticky. What the hell can it be anymore!? Is there some fucking phantom in my comp?!?!?
Of course I could try doubling memory (how much does it cost?) but if even that doesn't work then I just wasted my money for nothing. Besides as you said it should play fine with 1024mb so why would I need to double it!? :S

Or maybe I just change back to WC3 as DoW absolutely refuses to work with my comp. DoW isn't THAT great I would buy new comp for it...

:(

EDIT
Oh and just to remind, there is no stickyness at the beginning. It comes when I have some squads on the screen and becomes worse as more stuff comes to play.

I hear you man. Computer games are beginning to freak me out. Some play flawless, others crawl or crash.

Take a look at the Neverwinter Nights 2 tech support board for example. You've got a lot of people with the finest computers money can buy, and still have severe FPS issues even on the lowest of detail settings. They've had to shut down several threads about this problem already simply for becoming too long.

I'm just guessing but maybe if hardware was more standardized (like in a console such as xbox 360 etc.) there'd be less problems like this.

My computer way exceeds the recommended specs yet I get significant drops in FPS when there's a many units on screen even at rock-bottom resolution and settings (I'm only playing the campaign). While I hear others with less powerful computers can run 4 vs. 4 or better games flawlessly no matter how intense the action gets. I don't get it.

Just opened the comp and tried DC. I loaded the mission where I attack the Tau citadel so the action is pretty neat. The game won't lag until it has been open for 1-2 minutes. No matter how intense the action is the game just-won't-lag until some minutes have passed. And when the stickyness and lag starts it also stays. Strange?

The video card they put in is pretty decent. First thing about troubleshooting problems like this is that you need to eliminate things. I would first move all the graphic settings to their lowest. That includes the resolution to 800x600 16. At the same time, disable all sound in the game thru the options menu. See how that works.

If it works better, than turn the sound back on and see if it stays good with the performance. If it does, then move the resolution up a degree at a time. And so on and so on.

If the problem still exists with the resolution and graphic settings all set to low and the sound is turned off, then you should start messing with the 3D settings in your nVidia control panel.

Turn off anti-aliasing and anistrophic. Turn off the vertical sync, as was mentioned before. Set the texture filtering to full performace. There are probably more settings to mess with, so I would just make all of them at their lowest and sacrifice all the image quality. If that doesn't work, then there has to be something running in the background that is slowing you down. If you don't think any programs are doing that (i.e. anti-virus), then you might have a hardware failure somewhere, although I doubt it.

As I have said before in this thread (at least I think so, don't remember) I've tried to set all settings to the lowest possible, I also set resolution lower but I just didn't mention it here. When I still had the Ati driver I played with those 3D settings pretty much and I tried to set them all as low as I could with no effect. I think there's nothing I can do. Maybe the processor is broken or something.

Oh and by the way do you know a internet site which checks the condition of my PC? One guy told me there's a site which checks my processor, memories etc if there's something broken. Too bad my shitty memory forgot the name of this site. It was something like www.omega (there was some word after the omega but I don't remember what).net

Any clue?
