won't let me patch to 1.41

I patched DoW all the way to 1.51, but then I installed Winter Assault today, which for some reason put it back to 1.4. Now, whenever I try to re-patch it, the patching thing (RTPatchWrapper I think it's called) closes unexpectedly, and gives me an errorlog and a minidump.

Why won't it let me patch?

Try clearing your TEMP directory and defragging your harddrive. Updating windows to SP2 wouldnt hurt either.

Well, I defragged yesterday... I don't know how to clear my temp directory, and as for SP2... every time I try to install it, from CD or downloading from Microsoft, it gets right to the end and then says "Access denied. Windows XP Service Pack 2 could not install". No idea what's going on there

Well thats a problem in itself - if I was in that situation I would format and reinstall windows, SP2 would then apply. Is formatting an option for you?

it is an option, but a majorly desperate one. I have a lot of stuff that would take a hell of a long time to re-download.

Perhaps you could invest in a DVD RW drive or an external HDD (both relatively cheap) for backup purposes.

Anyway, lets see if we can at least get DoW patched...SP2 will almost certainly require the format and you should do it at some point. Clearing your TEMP directory means navigate to it (C:\Windows\TEMP by default) and deleting everything in it, reboot and then try patching again.

done that, no effect unfortunately... the patch installer always closes when it's installing WXPData-Music.sga if that's significant

You could try doing a clean reinstall of both games, the "unpatch" function may have messed up that file.
