View Full Version : Mod starting up in prep for HW2

Well, the topic says it all really, ill be creating a (insert fancy word for made up) mod for HW2.

Ill be making as many of the models as i can, and learn how to texture them, before the game comes out. heres a short back story

The United Commonwealth of Earth (WIP) was formed in the late 21st century as the new world government, due to the discovery of warp travel. after exploring for several decades, they encountered a vastly superior alien race, who nearly wiped out the human race, if not for the first wartime use of the rail gun. after stemming the alien invasion, the UCE formed the Terran starfleet, a new navy tasked with the protection of the Solar system and any intersteller colonies. The year is now 2278, and the TSF now consists of 7 fleets, and has travelled to every star system in the supercluster.

Now they want to move further. With the invention of the hyperspace gates, and faster warp speeds, the entire quadrant is now open to them, but they are not alone.....

The ships of the TSF

In other sci-fi universes, i have found a lake of military traditions and protocals. I hope to correct that with this universe. The terran ships are based around WW2/modern day naval warfare, with many turrets on all facings, armour belts, shields, torpedoes, support ship hangers, etc etc. capital ships will be big and lumbering, they will be the main combat units, with strike craft moving to a more supportive role.

Below is my first ship, the Broadsword class Battlecruiser

I will be posting regularly with updates, so stay tuned

I hope other ship designs will be similair to that... it's really well done. It's got sort of a modern day feel about it, which makes it really cool.:tophat:

well, if you wants doctrines, covoring the military, economic and scientific/research parts of racces, then there's a mod in progress. ours :D

well, good luck esp if you're the only person working on them. they doo look "modern"...although a bit retro..imo...good work and good luck :)

hey nothing wrong with retro... (baiting somebody-hehe)

I like the look a lot. Ships plastered with guns always looks cool.

I hope the alien race has a different (if even slightly) battle philosophy. After all you dont want to get into the HW identical fleets trap.

Finally- Good luck. I hope you can find some others to help you out. A one man mod is, well, really hard to pull off.

Look, the "identical fleets" of Homeworld was not a bad thing. Considering everything else HW did, and the fact that a considerable portion of the Kharakian fleet was gained after going through their foes data files from captured ships, it's not surprising that you end up with ships that are alike.

The primary thing I'd do if someone does a HW2 mod redoing Homeworld is to make the Kushan fighters/corvettes slower but heavier-armored, and Taiidani faster but with a harder punch. Resulting in two ships that end up identical in effectiveness in the end, but going about it in different styles.

However, that doesn't make the original HW any less enjoyable with nearly matching fleets. With everything else about the ships, we still have a very unique game system that does stuff no one else dared to do.

As for the model ship up there, it looks rather interesting. :) I'll look forward to the mods. :)

Cool ship, I like the look! The only think that I'm not sure about is the vintage 1979 navy missile launchers. ;)

Is it me or to the Tai salvage corvettes crash into the enemy ships less often than the Kushan ones?

i like the overall look but the forward missle launcher is in the fireing arc of that forward turret. take that away and give it 2 torp tubes in the bow

14th May 03, 3:17 PM
Wow, that ship is beautiful. What's the polycount?
And gl with the mod. I'd definately like to see ships like the in Hw2.

those vintage 1979 missile launchers, as u so kindly put it, happen to be based on the FFG's of the Royal Australian navy, who are the mainstay of the fleet. so there.

as for retro, do u mean 50's style, because thats what i was sort of aiming for, as my favorite ship that ever sailed is the USS Missouri, and when she was refitted for modern day warfare, she was a massive can o' woopas.

there is 8 MK94 longbow torpedo tubes on the prow, and 2 on the stern. Ill give use a full weapons list very soon

WOW
thats all I can say

F'Lar

still. i think you should get rid of the front missle launcher......it'll look better

Can you put that ship in again with at least top and bottom views

14th May 03, 8:51 PM
WOW!:wowsers: that is a great model. If all of your ships will look like that then it will be an asome mod. If you could tell me what 3d program you used I might be able to help you.:wowsers:

I use Rhino 3D for my meshes, im trying to find away to *give* me more saves, as i have only 3 left. I will scale down the missile launcher, and i think i will remove the prow one, maybe.

ok here is a full weapon list:

Primary -12 rail cannon (6 turrets)

Secondary - 36 pulse guns (12 turrets)
10 phaser banks

Tertiary - 10 MK94 ADCAP longbow torpedo tubes
4 quantum torpedo tubes
2 anti-air missile systems

Before u start yelling star trek, I have included phasers and quantum torpedoes as, besides being cool weapons, they are technically feasable weapon systems, and something that future scientists may develop, same as the rail cannons. I will be "ripping" tech from all different universes, tech that i think is feasable, and cool

He is my prelim ship list for the UCE fleet

Mothership - some sort of starbase, maybe like the ticonderoga from starship troopers

Shipyard - Mobile drydock/ship yard

Battlecruiser - Missouri class Battleship BB
Missile destroyer? - Broadside class battle cruiser BC
Destroyer - Argonaut class cruiser CC
Carrier - Enterprise class fleet carrier CVF

Ion frigate - Warspite class light/strike cruiser CL/CS
Assault frigate - Hood class destroyer DD
Support Frigate - Kanimbla class assault ship SSH

Corvette - ANZAC class frigate FF
Multi gun corvette - Seeker class guided missile frigate FFG
Torpedo corvette - Duke class torpedo frigate FFT
Heavy corvette - Spectre class Battle frigate FFB

strike craft are in thought process

Now u have probably guessed by now, this mod is about capital ships, and lots of them...well it is, so there

15th May 03, 8:20 AM
Very nice. Only thing I think might need some improving is the barrels of those rail cannon turrets, they look a bit flat, but that's just me. Otherwise imo it's excellent :thumb:

No1lives4ever
15th May 03, 9:44 AM
Well, the Railguns from this time ARE flat. I think it would look awesome with the right textures on it!

Good job!

Magus

For the strike craft, will they remain "fighter" type ships, or more like small gunboats?

F'Lar
15th May 03, 10:18 PM
i think that they should be small gunboats, but thats my opinion

beiltan
16th May 03, 10:24 AM
there will be both gunboats and strike craft, i hope

Tangent,

A mod was actually done for homeworld that made the Kushan fighters slower firing but more damage and the Taiidan faster firing but less damage, it's just a simple tweak to the gun stats.

Can't remember the name though

mrmoron
17th May 03, 3:59 PM
Now THOSE are the kind of guns I like! This stuff is getting better by the minute.

beiltan
17th May 03, 11:31 PM
made some improvements to the Missouri, all for the better

http://beiltanpics.homestead.com/files/Missouri2.jpg

Now, about texturing these suckers.

What is the best way to go about it that will convert to HW2 funky modelling style, (i really dont know anything about texturing really)

If anyone is willing to offer their services as a texturer, i would really appreciate it.

Could you maybe make a thread with ALL of your ships posted in one post so that we can see them?

And maybe put a weapons list for each ship in another post.

And also put a guide to the color coding you use in the "blueprint" pictures of your ships.

Other then that I must be perfectly honest and blunt...and I hope you don't hold it against me but.....I LOVE EM :-) Keep up the good work! I love the sem-retro look in some of their weapons mounts...and they just look so "Imperial" that I just have to say they are great.

They remind me of some of the great Sci-Fi ships of the old days and in novels. You know where the ships actually have BIG VISIBLE GUN TURRETS and thick heavy looking armor. There is just too much "Let's make it streamlined and purdy" in sci-fi SHOWS no adays that they forget ships like the ones you designed LOOK GREAT! [endrant]

beiltan
18th May 03, 1:15 AM
ok, ill make the thread, from now on, everyone posting about my mod, rederect to the main thread

Retroboy
18th May 03, 11:08 AM
I love the sem-retro look...

Well, I love the FULL retro look. :D

(sorry, couldn't resist)

one note: the Turrets seem to contain the mostpolies(obviously) try to optimize them or re-design them so that they have a lower polycount...otherwise great models

19th May 03, 6:51 PM
well i would agree... if this was going into homeworld but from what ive read from the dev diaries hw2 will be able to support much more detail than hw ships so it should be fine.

beiltan
19th May 03, 8:04 PM
zeframs right.

From now on, please post in my main thread for my mod, to save space and time
