Hi, i just started to make a Vietnam Mod, it will take some time until I'm able to show first screens thought, because i have to get in touch with the Tools first...but be prepared :)
oh and of course, if you have ideas and stuff, tell me ! :)

I was thinking about this a while back, I would love to see vietnam in the CoH world. I did put a few ideas together but it's been on the backburner for a while shall we say lol.
The main thing i was worried about was how to include helicopters into the game. I havent been able to find out how to setup the movement. If you can do that, then that much seals it for me.

i was thinking of just using helicopters for offmap support, like the P-47 in CoH, or for rapid troop deployment, like theres a Huey landing and dropping of some Rangers. If you have some Ideas are pictures you already gathered, feel free to give them to me ;)
besides, does anyone know if i can import the CoHModels in 3ds Max or something ? its really annoying to start the game and load a map for every change you make :(

Command Abilities for an Air doctrine.
Air drop - Huey or Chinook droops a squad or 2.
AT drop - Same as normal.
Supply Drop - Same as normal.
Attack Huey strafe run. (Huey comes and fires some rockets. But not as affective as the Cobra)
Cobra Attack run. (Pretty much a Cobra comes circles around its target firing rockets and the chaingun.)
F4-Phantom Napalm Run.

yeah, pretty much like that, only that i think i ll make the Huey Strafe run like the P-47 Machinegun attack , so you dont have to much rockets and stuff, and for the airdrop, i think hueys > chinooks, because of the look / feeling :)
This would be alot of fun if done well.

i think im done with the rifleman and support unit reskin, will do Para's and Rangers now. Screens will be posted later, because atm each rifleman got 2 guns :S

what would u do for air recon? also, id keep a bombing run typoe attack for AT and antibuilding, unless you will have napalm hurt tanks a lot.
maybe a spec ops branch as well
SEALs, SEAL sniper (uber 1337 sniper), and SEAL insetion (maybe a helo) SEALs can camo and upgrade like stormtroopers (maybe nade launcher, forgot what vietnam one was) and LMG (also forgot)
the other part would be some support features, maybe heavy weapon drop, heuy attack run, and arty strike..
idk what youd do for an armor type...
the could also be an NVA branch and a Viet Cong branch for the opfor... maybe Soviet support for the 3rd? (gets al sorts of heavy soviet tanks ans AA and stuff like that, maybe Spetznatz (sp?) or were they not around then???)

great Ideas there :) I will do something like a plan this weekend about what im trying to change ingame and stuff, and i think you just solved my "what do i give the NVA as command tree?" question, THX ! :D for the US im planning of doing US Army, Airborne, Marines Tree, more informations this weekend ;)
btw, almost all US Soldierskins are done (exept the Rangers, got a problem there) , screens will follow tonight or tomorrow :)

Yeah only if we could use the M1919A6 model ingame so it fits the era better, the M1917 looks ugly anyway, and it was used more during EARLY early '44 and the M1919A6 took its place by vietnam, along with the M60...

SEALs werent really used in Nam... Rangers, GreenBerets, and SOG units were
mostly the Rangers and GreenBerets as special forces
Wow, sorry about that folks my post made no sense. SEALs were not really used in Nam and if I'm not mistaken weren't around. GreenBerets Rangers and SOG units were the special forces of choice during the war.. Mostly Rangers and GreenBerets were deployed. Definatly make sure Rangers + GreenBerets are as good as they were.

They were used as scouts,snipers, and blowing stuff up that needs to be blown up lol. So, is this mod being done, or is it dead? It has been awhile since the was posted in, would love to see it finished...

SOG was short for MACV-SOG, which stood for .
Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observations Group
Believe me, these guys were not just observing.
SEALS were feared by the Viet Cong for their ambushes and raids n the Me Kong Delta.
My uncle was in the Marines and did two tours in Vietnam. I asked him about the SEALS - he said they were very well respected - quote, "tough SOBs." That's pretty high praise considering that a Marine is complimenting a sailor.
Here's some ideas for the mod...if it's alive. Keep in mind most mods that I've seen like to add in a ton of unit types, but this distracts from the game in my opinion. I think THQ did a fine job with the balance, so I would opt that you stay with the basic premise, but just change the flavor of the units to appeal to the Vietnam theme. Remember, that Vietnam was mostly an infrantry war. Yes, Tanks and Air were used, but most combat was Man to Man based.

nice ideas grenademagnet (and name lol!) i think that a vietnam mod would be haxtastic (good)! much potential indeeeed. you can make it that when in the cover of foliage/trees that the squad/soldier becomes invisable, and can be seen only when moving/within say 20m. give the "hold fire" ability to all units. this would be orsm!!!
so its not just a "cloak anywhere" its a "context sensitive" approach, allowing for awesome ambushes indeed.

no, its not dead, US Inf. Skins as good as done (only very little tweaks), German to NVA reskins like 80% done, had much to do the last days, but i will put on a list of what i plan later tonight, and i hope you give me your opinion on it :)

did some quick changes, i think the russian tech tree could get some big Tanks of the Russians, and the VC's mostly weak but stealth units, for making ambush's and stuff, also maybe some stickie bombs and stuff
AK47 / M16 : I think i will give the AK and M16 only to special forces (because they are like STG44) and the squadleaders will get the Car-15 / AKMS

lookin good man, keep up the work! you need a few maps like the Ho Chi Mihn Trail and some other huge forest maps with the occaisional large road for tank movement.
the city maps like Khe San would be cool too.

Another good battle map would be the City of Hue as depicted in Full Metal Jacket. Here is Urban Combat at it's height.
I'm not sure how to do it, but it would be a sweet deal if you could adapt the Mines logic to a Claymore Mine with selectable detonation. To cap the deal - a directional explosive, so the facing could be controlled at planting and triggered when a squad came close. Very cool indeed.

you CAN do area effect damage (thus explosions) in an arc i think. theres a few diff types of templates, one of then is a circle. so the claymore is slightly possible
we need fire bases.
Sharidan needs a missile launcher though.

glad to see someone has actually started a mod on this, i had planned on making one my self awhile back but i didnt see any time frame for any official mod tools ei ways to create new models for the game etc, its almost exactly similar to what you have so far heh.
i dont think il be attempting any mods until i see more tools being released. heres all the resources that I had came up with before i decided to put it on hold. i never got around to coming up with a tree for the NVA, my idea was to have a defensive/proproganda type option, then another one that has air support options that would be provided by the soviet union(flying NVA colors of course ;) )

Im not sure if you have done this or not, but the way I had came up with to make it where the player could only have access to specific units was by adding them to the commander tree requirement, if the player picked army, army specific units would then be added to the build options in the barracks etc.

I have a quick addition here - Make the NVA and VC squads start with the Simonov SKS semi-automatic rifle... It kinda evens out the basic Rate of Fire...

Yeah, wanted to do that and make the SKS like the M1 Garand in CoH, and the M14 like the Kar98 regarding fire rate and stuff.
I think i ll reskin the G43 Sniper, use an alpha map for the whole Scope, and make it look like an M14, since its the only model that looks more or less the same.

almost forgot about this, for the army commander i had planned for the army infantry have m16 rifles, while the marines would only have the m14s since the majority of marine units carried the m14 for quite some time while army units had the m16 , atleast thats what i read somewhere about the timelines of when weapons began to be introduced/upgraded and replaced

eh no idea kimmo, alot of mods that are TC's are sorta die before they have a chance to get off the ground since there still arent any offical model tools out or art tools. im sure a different vietnam mod will surface when/if things are released ;/

sounds great, although, ive been thinking about this for a while (not as a mod, i was thinking it would be good fo a possible coh2) anyways, the vietcong would have to make extensive use of the jungles, otherwise this mod would be so imbalanced. By this i mean that the average vietcong sqaud could use infiltrate, or most at least, to set up ambushes etc....mainly because firepower was not on there side. also, A tunnel system at OP 'swould be nice :)

yea i know, the m14 was definitely a better weapon to have in the field than the m16
if tools ever get released during the time im still interested in continuing my own vietnam mod, then il make it. but right now. theres not alot i can do
