There have been lots of talk about an MMORPG about Homeworld. Well at least i think there is. This would be a great idea for relic to look into since the genre of games is extremely popular. The idea of persistant worlds and being somebody else has mass appeal and i think this idea should be explored further. By concentrating our efforts and making this thread super duper long, Relic may actually consider making one.

There is already an established universe with its own mythology. So creating a persistant world would not be too difficult.

Post your ideas for Homeworld based MMORPGs here.

some ideas to look into:
story
controls
roaming creeps
basic stuff you find in popular MMORPGs.

A simple and cheap persistant galaxy with sectors and systems that all have resource pockets in them. When players join the game they would have to buy their ships from the few shipyards that each system/sector would have, until they can get their hands on their own carrier(s). When they have achieved this point they can rely on themselves and grow as a faction, ultimately building their own shipyards and perhaps even motherships. War would be constant and moments of peace would be rare, therefore resources would play highly important role. The game would end when someone rules the whole galaxy or something similiar. Basically the same thing that has been mentioned dozen times before. Not much of an RPG... But it might work... Or maybe not...

However, this kind of persistant galaxy was done with Homeworld, except it is in Star Wars -universe, EvR. Very cool. Had some roleplaying in it too.

I've ran into some other threads on this subject:

http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12719

I saw it mentioned in other areas as well, in passing.

I think it would be GREAT!! You could start small & grow your own Kith.

Count me as FOR the idea. If humble me can be of any help, let me know.

I'll admit that I've dreamed up too possibilities.

One is anchient kharak right after the heresy wars...

The other is right after the beast infection...

They're both pretty self explanatory I think :bored:

maybe it could be like eve.. except u know.. GOOD...... lol... maybe somesort of palyer ship with wingmates j00 hire npc or friends, and u have economy with like discovering new parts of univarse and then buy betar stuff, and hugely cutomizable ships.... but money should not be mainly obtained by mining for 4 hours......

Hell yes, I've been entertaining this idea for a long time. You would select your starting ship, a corvette class ship, the type you select would be suited to a particular job, such as a military craft, espionage, explorer, merchant. You could pursue special character traits you would earn, such as charisma, which would help in diplomatic situations with NPCs as well as maybe getting better prices if you are a merchant. You would eventually be able to move up through the ranks, buying better systems for your ship, buying better and bigger ships, all the way up to a BC, although that would take a while. The farther you move up, the more priveleges you would gain with the particular job and faction you are a part of. Say you are in the military and find yourself quite high up on the ladder. You could order the construction of gun platforms and gravity wells and such.

Some MMO games try this thing where the world is completely empty except for the player and some mobs. This usually ends up with a poorly run and empty universe. My idea would be to have several factions already set up. Hiigarans, Vaygr, Bentusi, and their affiliations and diplomatic relations would be controlled by the devs on a very general level. You could join up with any faction you wanted once ingame. Of course, if you join up as the Hiigarans and attack an ally, relations aren't gonna be too good between you, and you most likely will be labeled a criminal, have the NPC military after you as well as a bounty on your head, by both the faction you attacked and your own. Player associations and groups might also build their own mining operations or resort space hotels or shipyard repair stations should they have the money.

I would love to see giant, thriving cities in space, like what's seen in this pic: http://well-of-souls.com/homeworld/hws/hw2/images/display.htm?concept_cargo_yard.jpg
The idea is to create a thriving universe, where you can see that there are civilizations living out their lives here.

you have forgotten turanic raiders, tidaan, kadesh......

Cool Man

creeps could be turanic raiders for example

And you could join one of the major factions or races and guilds would be kiiths :)

I'd rather not have multiple ships under one control. :\

In fact, it will be better (IMO) if you control one ship and get to customize the chassiss.

You get ship sizes ie. Frigates, LC, DD, Cruiser, BC, HC, DN, BB. (No particular order towards the end)

And you get to choose from different hull types - Missle, Carrier, Cannon, Beam, Covert, Assault, Defense, etc.

The difference is that each hull class gets you different restrictions or advantages, ex.:
- Missle Chassiss have weapon hardpoints that face in multiple directions. (spread out)
- Beam Chassiss have little weapon hardpoints but have increased reactor compatibility.
- Assaults will emphasize more on offensives (have stronger firepower, faster)
- Defense hulls will have thicker armour, and will be slower...

I'd type more, but I'm lazy and i wish to check out this 'Darkspace'

I was thinking more along the lines of there being different models of ships you could by, like cars, you know. You might buy the LithCorp. Firebrand Corvette chassis, but you would be able to work on, upgrade, replace systems and such, like maybe that fire control system just doesn't cut it any more, or maybe you want to kick it up a notch with a new engine or maybe you want a better sensor array. My hope would be that statistics regarding these sub system performances wouldn't be generalized, that it would be very involved. Like maybe that sensor package has a great 300km contact radius, but only a 60km identification and detail contact radius and is very susceptible to jamming or cloaking or other sorts of disruption. This would make working on and customizing your ship much more involved and interesting.

The idea would be that you could pick a chassis (which would come with default systems and such for that chassis) and be able to customize it to what you need it to do, also for bragging rights. Who wouldn't be impressed with a ship that can lock onto and fire at 6 targets 100km out with a missile salvo and is able to run at 50km a minute under impulse power. Or maybe you'd want a ship that's able to pass right under the nose of a sensor-laden frigate without it ever knowing you were there. Or maybe you'd want a ship that can sweep over and detect a ship down to the very specs of its subsystems from 500km away?
Some chassis' would be more suited for certain things, like maybe some would have inherently more space for cargo, or more initial weapon slots or something, I just wouldn't want to see every smuggler using the same chassis or nothing. The whole point of this system would be variety and customization.

Uhm.. yeah... that would work as well.

Tried Darkspace, and I'd say it's good except that in a 5000 player server, i was the only one person online?!?

EDIT:
A few hours later - wrong region client. Doh. How stupid could i get?

I'd love a homeworld MMORPG but I think the genre can be exploited more effectively by taking it inside the solar system. This is not strictly necessary; a game can be made with interstellar conflicts and such, but basicly everything can be done in a substantially more realistic setting.

Realism is becoming a big plus for me. That means kicking stuff like artificial gravity. Playability also required me being in touch with a few recognizeable characters. Why not work into that? I say assimilate a "descent" like setting (but better) and create a recognizeable universe with consistent, understandable but realistic rules and solid politics.

You start with one character, a person. Possibly some genetic upgrades, some cybernetics. Then after a while he aquires a vessel, something as big as a antonov. Then he trades, mines, practices diplomacy, steals, practices piracy and acts as part of one of two (or more) strongly politicized factions. You travel from asteroids to the geostat (skytower) complexes, to the moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn. The player aquires more prestige in his faction, bigger vessels, better robotic servants, better technology as he cooperates closely with his fellow players, as part of some organization, kartel (guild) or gang. The gang can be ruthlessly mercenary or as viciously virtuous as the players decide.

Action in the ship is done with characters moving through graphically evocative 3D tunnels, tubes and cavernous halls. There is no up or down in those spaceships (unless the vessel is capable of landing on a planet) and players really need to grow into their vessels. There is a lot of robotics everywhere, acting as NPC's, dangerous enemies, loyal allies or tools. At times players must do missions putting their robots in strategy missions on 2d planet surfaces or in 3D asteroid warrens.

But the characters can also interface with their ships, playing in homeworld style ship-versus-ship missions, or (at higher levels) fully moving into strategy-based environments.

Players should be able to choose from several specialized character templates, some more agressive, others more subtle, others more cultural.

This can just as well be an interstellar game as an interplanetary name. Each choice has several strict advantages and disadvantages. I personally favor an interplanetary game but most other players will prefer to keep the known interstellar mythology of homeworld as intact as possible and that may be a very strong argument.

A game such as this one should offer choice for one, and a big environment. I'd prefer thousands versus thousands of players, scatttered over available space (and a single solar system is way big enough for those players to have to look for each other!) plus a whole lot of enemies. Some players would wish to specialize on ship vs. ship combat, whereas others would be diplomats, "social engineers" or robotics experts. And some players may choose Jack-of-all-trades characters.

And death should not be a final end; a character is easily cloned and regrown, with the latest updated memories recorded in a central place. Your character is vaporized by mimas pirates during a mission? You can opt to awaken your stored clone on Ceres or on Hyperion, whichever suits you best. IF you paid insurance ofcourse.

At high levels players may wield politically very effective houses, with a personalized crest and color standard, a reputation, alliances, a flotilla of specialized vessels, their own very secret technology and a detailed history.

Lower level characters would move under the radar of the high levels, scurry about on their own missions or act as tools of their organization, or do missions paid for by NPC types.

A setting like this could be made very colorful, with references to all sorts of terrestrial cultures having found a niche in (O'neill?) space habitats. One habitat could be strictly shiite governed, but a little outward in the system could be another isolated habitat with hivemind-linked yakuza with a neocommunist ideology.

I can see concept artists eyes glittering already.

A bit of a early 90's sci-fi, no? - it feels a little outbound for the feel Homeworld gives.
Something more comtemporary and neutral for the background might be good to kept the universe open

Hmmm....this can go many ways...guess I'll just throw stuff out there

Neutral story elements: Hiigraran Intraspace Defense Division, Vaygr Pirating for new advancements as their ranks change, Broken Taiidan Factions - conflict in there own government. Taiidan try to make a comeback after reeling from their conflicts and the embarassment of not keeping a certain race in check.
- New Planetary System (NPS)- where most of the players reside slowing finding out about Hgn, Tdn, and Vgr while developing roles, classes, technologies -- or even being in between those 3 entities in shroud of mystery until players inacted events occur. As a matter of fact - This system could be the cornerstone of the new issues to happen. Basic scenario: Again this system is unaware of dealing outside itself. inhabiting planets are living a fairly normal life(company rivalries, new trading, changing views all due seeing 2 planets at night for the first time)( this being a preliminary for future changes ) ( ill leave a blank for roles, class, blahblah ) yet this system has its own hidden items aside form the 3 races mentioned. Unexplored planets ( 2 is a good start ) Planet N being a research paradise for materials, refining building techniques, and station for interplanetary scouting. Planet S a shadow planet slowing revolving the system ( in the spirit of artifacts anyone? )

[A simple, subtle space hopefully that can capture the ambiance and intrigue in the MP maps when its quiet and when there's a long decisive battle - pretty much the idea behind this little world ][ 4 races total ]

- I think that's good, elaboration will come later once realize what I said

I tell you what i would love to see ,a new version of HW where not only can you battle in space but also you can send units down on to a planet and establish a base there.

You could mine planetary resources to build your base and can be sent back up to an orbiting processing labs [requiring an upgrade] that would enhance overall production for both space based and planet based forces.

Just imagine HW2 and DOW:WA...combined :insane: :agree:

Could someone please define that "MMORPG"?

30th Oct 05, 1:04 AM
Adamstrange but hen it would be not RPG but RTS ....
i imagen that there yould be an one galaxi nad many solar sistem whit contain outpost whit star gates. in solas sistems u can get any activiti from militaristik to trade operacions
i think that there could be 4 things: 1Hiigara military (autops), Trade posts (shuc as maining platforms bases and so on) 3 some small pirate bases and in the end Vaigr military...
and player couls chose which one he want to bee: an a pirte or trading officer or military person. all solar sistems could be united by star gates, the main battles could be there where activiti is the moust... and if one side looses on some sistem then that sistem and autpost goes to that side who wins :)

Guys, don't get me wrong, I absolutley loved both Homeworld and Homeworld 2, and I would love to see wither an MMOPRG, or an MMORTSG, but didn't CCP already coner the market in this area with EVE?

Again, I am not trying to be negative or a pesimist, but seriously, would a Homeworld MMOG do well next to EVE?

All coments are welcome, just trying to stir up some more conversation in this thread, seems like it's been dead a while.

Thanks

EVE is not really for everyone - its VERY slow and too big for some. Also its skill system is very time intensive and character stats have almost no effect on anything. If anything, a gameplay more akin to Star Wolves would fit the Homeworld universe.
