View Full Version : I want to change CD Key - what's it linked to and can I do it via registry?

So for Xmas I got CoH which of course comes with DoW:GOTY.

Now, I would like to either sell or introduce someone to the world of DoW with my non-GOTY editions of DOW & WA (so as not to leave an unsightly hole in my CoH box).

Some questions then if you would be so kind:

1)What is my Cd key linked to? Is it linked to my GS account and will I have to declare that I have changed it to relic and deactivate the old one?

2)Can I just manually edit the registry cd keys so as to avoid the slog that is installing Dow,WA and DC again?

Many Thanks!

Moving to tech assistance.

Your CD key is not linked to your gamespy account so you can use your new CD key without losing your account. You can also change the CD key through the registry (this thread (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=113713) details how to find where the key is stored).

However, the GoTY edition does have a few extra maps which you wont be able to use unless you actually install it so you may want to do a reinstall anyway.

As TBS said, your CDKey is not linked to your online account - it is only linked to your client game. This means you will be kicked out of the Online Lobby if someone using your key logs on. This is not detrimental or bannable, but merely an inconvenience; all your accounts remain intact.

Well thats weird, check the registry and see what is entered in there for CD key.
