Does anybody know why I can't log into the online lobby to download the patches?

You have to give us a little more info that that. I'll move this to the tech forums for you, could you please post a warnings.log and run the network tester and post the results (explanations on how to do those things can be found at the top of the DoW tech assistance forum).
