View Full Version : Patching problem

I have original Dow, WA and Dc. I just upgraded my motherboard, cpu and graphics card and as such did a reinstall of windows xp home. I keep my Os on one drive and had all my games and info on a 2nd drive, so i uninstalled all the games so as to not get registry and install problems, then went and reinstalled windows, did all the drivers and such, then reinstalled Dow and now when ever i try to patch it, i get a patch error saying that some files have been modified or moved. I get this error when i patch with the full 1.41 patch, try to install Wa, or even start Dow and let it download through multiplayer loby.

Any ideas on what the heck as happened? As this was how i had it running only yesterday and today....no ability to patch.

I have reinstalled it a few times, on either drive as well now and i still cant get it to work.:crash:

I have now also tried doing all the patching with my antivirus off, as it suggests to do that, and still no luck. I tried doing all the smaller individual patches, and was able to install 1.01, 1.10, 1.20, but on trying to go to 1.30 i had the same error that some files had been modified or moved or changed. The game runs perfectly, i just cant patch it up and as such can go on to install Wa as it tries to patch up as well.

this is the patch.err report file

ENTRY: W40k\W40kData-Sound-Full.sga

error ept0036: Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was

found. No update done since file contents do not match.

for additional info, i went from an amd 32bit 2800+ to an amd 64bit 3800+, and an old nforce 2 ot nforce 4 motherboard, and a ati 9600xt agp to a 7600gt pcie.

ps: i am also having major problems patching battlefield 2, yet warcraft 3, farcry and 1-2 others have all patched perfectly and run without any problems. Before i upgraded everything ran without a hitch......

Have you installed the latest nForce drivers for your motherboard?

Yob
6th Feb 07, 1:46 PM
I have only installed the ones that came in the box with it. Should i try updating them?

ÜberJumper
6th Feb 07, 2:21 PM
I suspect what's happening is that one of your DVD drives is corrupting the data as you install your games.

Then when you go to patch, the patcher program thinks you're running the wrong data files to patch, thus fails.

Try reinstalling from a different drive, see if that helps.

You might also want to disable DMA transfers from whatever optical drive you're using.

Yob
6th Feb 07, 3:19 PM
Ok, i have updated my motherboard drivers, tried to install from other dvd drive, and still no luck, although it had a different listing under the patch.err file

ENTRY: W40k\W40kData-SharedTextures-Full.sga

which is a different file from the last one i posted.

ÜberJumper
6th Feb 07, 3:20 PM
Your files are all likely corrupt. Disable DMA on the ATA channel that the optical drive you're installing from is on.

Yob
6th Feb 07, 4:00 PM
ok found out how to disable the dma on the optical drives and am trying it now. I set it to poi like it susgested to do in another thread i found......this is so annoying and weird. I guessing its the same issue im having with battlefield 2?

Ok tried it with the dma disabeled and set to poi, and i still got the same errors.....im all outa ideas and patience with this......

should i try formatting the hdd im trying to install these files to? would there maybe be some remanat file info that is causing problems? as i only formatted the drive with windows on it, not my second gaming and general crap drive

Yob
6th Feb 07, 6:19 PM
ok last toss of the dice, going to format my second drive that im trying to install them too.....hope to god it works

Yob
6th Feb 07, 7:52 PM
ok a full format didnt work, but it did come up with a corrupt error in data3.cab this time, so i know it seems to be something wrong with the disc......so im now trying to copy them over to the harddrive and will run them from there. Very odd seeing as i never had a problem with these discs (both Dow and battlefield 2) before, and i didnt change my optical drives or harddrives.

no errors when copying any of the 3 discs to the hdd, yet when i ran them, i got an error saying that data1.cab was now corrupt. during the normal install i only got a data3.cab failure. Is this to lead me to believe that all 3 of my discs are just rooted?

ÜberJumper
6th Feb 07, 8:48 PM
It's not your disks, it's your Optical Drives OR a problem with your HDD controller. Try turning off DMA on it as well.

Yob
6th Feb 07, 9:47 PM
ok ill try it with everything set to pio mode.....right after i finish dling the sup com demo....hehe

ok i just tried it with everything set to pio mode....so that should have been the dma disabeled, thats on both harddrives and both opticals.....and i still get corrupt errors in the .cab files.

Yob
6th Feb 07, 11:07 PM
As crap as this sounds, i just tried uninstalling norton antivirus 2007, and then running the installs and patches of everything ive had trouble with, and it seems to be fixed. Seems that nortons might have been scanning and altering the files as they were being unpacked and installed, thus causing the errors and corruption. How stupid. Will have to get onto nortons and see what they have to say about it, as i dont fancy having to turn all my virus protection off everytime i need to install something with .cab files in it.

It also seems to affect downloaded files, with my sup com demo also being corrupt from having nortons going at the same time. If anyone else has these problems, maybe try having nortons uninstalled or turned off while doing everything and see if it makes a difference.

ÜberJumper
7th Feb 07, 12:09 AM
Errr you didn't turn off your antivirus program when you were installing?

Wasabi
7th Feb 07, 12:47 AM
Norton is a really awful antivirus program. I used to have it and I think it stopped two games from ever working again! I use AVG now. Much more reliable.

Yob
7th Feb 07, 2:48 AM
I have never had a problem having antivirus running while installing programs and the such, but i only just went over to nortons recently, before that i was running Avg and never had an issue, so i thought it wouldnt be an issue.

On a progress note, i have battlefield 2 fully installed and running fine, but Dawn of war is still being stubborn, even with antivirus gone and dma's disabbled.....

Moe
7th Feb 07, 2:49 AM
Wait I thought you said you fixed it? Do you still get the same error with DoW?

Yob
7th Feb 07, 2:23 PM
Yep still getting the error with Dawn of war. It seemed fixed as battlefield 2 installed fine and patched fully, and i had some further minor success with dawn of war, but still could not patch it in the end. Also the supcom demo which also has data.cab files in it also wont unzip or work correctly. Which means the problem is not in my optical drives, as supcom is just a demo from the web....

I think my machine has deeper issues than just problems with Dawn of war, seems to have issues with all data.cab files from certain games. Plus i have been getting minor windows errors as well. Might be time for a trip to the comp tech guy......I did read somewhere that sometimes windows can get issues with the unpacker that it uses for certain .cab files, and thus always corrupts them. I might try another full format and reinstall of everything, cause i really dont want to have to pay for the tech guys to look at it.

Mate im having the same issue.. I have had nothing but trouble with these games from day one.. the only one thats worked as it runs on its own engine is DC..
i can't patch past the big 1.41 ultimate update as i get those errors.. i have tried everything and only once by freek acident the game installed past it with WA.

I recently formatted my comp due to technical issues of downloading cracks.. (helpful tip .. be careful with what cracks you dl ;) and always always scan them lol)
anyway now i have come back to the same issue of installing DoW and WA.. they just don't patch damn things.. i think its a dodgy engine if you ask me.. its the only game that has also caused my system to freeze on everything resulting in my punching the reboot button so hard i forced the floppy drive to break from its housing :/

well if you get a fix or find anything PLEASE msg me the fix :D
this is the helpful long long post i have had for awhile trying to work out a fix.. if you find it useful lemme know aswell :)

Its a painful boat to be in Nosf, and one that im finding is not specially related to just Dawn of war, do i dont think that it is just that. I have had problems with just about anything in it that has a data.cab file that needs to be unpacked when its being installed.....The list is long

Farcry stuffed up on data2.cab on me once
Battlefield 2 stuffed up install and unable to patch due to file corruption
Supreme commander demo (3 different downloads) wont install due to data2.cab corruption.
Dawn of War cant patch or install depending on what fix i try due to data1,2,3.cab corruption.

Esentially any game i have except for warcraft 3 and frozen throne will not work properly on this machine. Its like every thing with the data.cab files just gets errors when installing.

Fixes ive tried:

Fresh install. No good
Update drivers for everything in the box. No good
Format gaming drive (i use separate drives for os and games). No good
Change all dma settings to pio, both harddrive and optical. No good
Uninstall nortons antivirus and then reinstall games. No good
Copy entire contents of discs to harddrive. No good
Install games to Os harddrive. No good
Swear and curse like a sailor. No good
Pray to god almighty. No good
Talk to wife about problem. No good, just laughter that after my expensive upgrade i cant play games.....
3 different calls to 3 different comp shops to see if they have ever encountered this problem. No good
Scouring the net for reasons for corrupt data.cab extraction. No good

Im am at a complete loss. The next thing on my list is to take back my new motherboard and try a different one.....

Thanks for all the help guys, its been wonderful, but in the end the solution was from a throwaway comment from an it guy. I unpluged every no-essential thing in my comp, and walla, no more problems. Seems my powersupply wasnt up to the task, and as such it was enough to get by, but trying to cope with these data.cab files overworked it and thus, corrupt data. So i installed and fully patched dawn of war when running on 1 harddrive and 1 cd drive. Other than that all my other crap was unplugged to free up wattage, and it seems to have worked.

Maybe anyone else who has been having this seemingly unsolveable issue should try this unless you have a better powersupply lying around spare to plug in and try. Pretty weird i know, but it seems to have solved the problem for me.

ÜberJumper
7th Feb 07, 10:51 PM
What power supply did you have?

That's helpful info though, could definately help someone else.

Yob
8th Feb 07, 1:56 AM
Its just the standard 400w one that came with my 2.5-3 yr old case, guy at the comp shop says i should be running about a 550w. Im going to get one tomorrow. So hopefully then all problems solved.

ÜberJumper
8th Feb 07, 9:14 AM
I am running a 400w power supply with an 8800 GTS. No issues so far. Although I suspect that because I'm on a UPS rated for 1000W, I can be ensured clean power is always supplied to my power supply.

GroundZero
8th Feb 07, 10:08 AM
Also to note, some PSU's are extremely inefficient and along their voltage rails drop higher than the 5% threshhold, thus supplying an inappropriately variable and low current along the voltage.

Yob
8th Feb 07, 4:56 PM
There is also that issue of "true" power and what it has listed can be "total max loading" there is a very big difference in performance because of this

Buddy I havn't read this forum for a few days and i received an e-mail from abit mobo company (as its their mobo im using) and it turns out that my DDR voltage is meant to be 2.8 and its set to 2.6 (auto set by Abits wonderful mobo :/ ) i bumped it up to "Crucials" DDR specs sheet from their website (Crucial Ballistix DDR400) and it patched!! i don't beleive it.lol

So heres a possible fix for ANY patching errors.. the memory maybe underpowered, nip into your mobo bios and take a browse then try re-patching.. hope this helps!

ooh just a quickie edit here:

I also have a poopy powersupply a 450Watt Butterfly ThermalTake

BUT i have a UPS back-up that is connected to every single peice of equipment on my PC and its only sucking out 160 watts to the PC unit itself.. and i have an Audigy 2 Pro Platinum soundcard (with its own internal power socket) and a XFX GeForce 6800 Ultra 256 DDR2 card again with 2!! x molex connections) and running doom 3 still only takes the wattage upto a max 180 from the mains.. so when peeps say about wattage being the cause.. i do doubt them :/ since it might only be mobo minor config changes that need to be done..

well ta ta boy,s and girls. :D
