Although the articles do not directly pertain to Homeworld 2, they hold very valuable tips on starting up a mod and modding etiquette. If you're thinking of starting a mod, or have an idea for a mod, do yourself a favor and read these two articles.

These two articles were written by Mychaeel, not by myself.

Sorry, but he treats users as if they're stupid - also, the notions he exponds only work for relatively simple FPS mods. I point you to Natural Selection as an example of why he's wrong. This point has been made several times by me in several forums before.

It's also FAR to UT-focused, and draws heavily on some cliched notions. Oh, and it's hard to read.

*shrug*

Of course, I'm leading a good mod team.

I guess these articles are more for all of the newb modders out there.

Although Dawn Falcon's mod project is almost certainly going to fly very far given the quality and make-up of his team, I'd say that only about 1 in 3 mod projects ever gets around to a functional quality release that's even mildly close to the original scope - the rest vanish into obscurity for one of many reasons. (I'm talking full-blown mods here, not tweaking configuration files that can be accomplished in a couple days by a single person)

An interesting (if short) read, with one major flaw.
Never join a project whose idea man or leader has no obvious development skills. This bit is wrong. I greatly assisted in organizing the Battlezone 2 Community Project modification - a HUGE mod - and I didn't do a stitch of art or development. Clicky to see a page I wrote (http://bz2cp.com/). If the project is big enough, there's room for a dedicated motivator/organizer/manager, which is the skill I brought to the table since that's what I do for a living. All I did was provide a chunk of the fanfic, manage the project for the first 4 months, create an idea "engine", and get (and hold) the roster together, yet I was arguably the captain in its inception stages.

An allegory: Does Dan Irish have to write code or skin ships for HW2 to be a success?
