I was in the shops and found medievial total war 2 for £20 but is it worth getting because I played the demo and it was quite limited to what you could do, which put me off it.

I read many reviews and they gave it a high mark but I want to know first hand what people who have the game, think about it so that I don't waste money.

This thread will discuss to me if this game is worth buying, the good and the bad points about the game and also that if it is like Rome Total War, which I really enjoyed playing.

Medival 2 total war is a great game. The single player campaign is very fun and the battles are great. If you have a friend who also plays it, you guys can go online and create some very fun and epic battles. Also, there is an expansion set to come out for the game. I think that you should definitely get it, its worth the money IMO.

I think it was a great game. The single player mode is a bit on the long side, but it's still worth while. Single player, to me, reminds me a bit of Civilization 4 (remember new expansion for that soon too :D ).

Be warned though, takes up a monster 11gigs of space. It is a system hog, so it's best to have a fairly decent computer to run this game smoothly, same could be said for alot of games, but this one more then others.

It's a great game that continues the Total War series faithfully. The demo only allows you to play the historical battles, not exactly the high mark of the series in of itself. The historical battles are limited, not never accurate, and some of them play themselves more or less.

Custom battle, multiplayer, and especially the Grand Campaign allow far more freedom and strategic/tactical thought.

I've been playing through the campaign, now with settings cranked to the maximum and the game looks fantastic. It's definitely a good game, but I still found the siege AI some what lacking despite the new patch. Other than that I find some of the diplomatic options quite limited, the campaign map movements cumbersome - ie I want to position my armies next to each other so that any attacks on them results in a joint battle, but that is often a hit and miss, etc etc.

ME:2 is most definitely a game worth purchasing. I got it a week after it was released here and haven't removed it since. there are flaws in it, but it is most surely a great tactical and strategic game, which can keep you entertained for over 100 hours easily.

The question for me is, is MTW2 better than, say, Europa Barbarorum or Rome Total Realism for RTW?

I've never played Europa Barbarorum, but I'd say it's kinda comparable to Rome Total Realism. Even if it wasn't, the total realism gang have started work on the Medieval 2 total realism mod, so there you go.

Personally, I love it.

I bought it a month or so back. I loved Rome, Medieval was no dissapointment, well worth my money, It even runs pretty darn well on my archaic system too, if you turn shadows off.

The diplomatic options were expanded a bit in Medieval 2 over Rome. So while they're still not near Civilization's quality, it's improved over the last entry in the series. The entire Total War series is a hack together of two different genre's to form it's own. As such neither the battle or campaign modes alone are as good as a game dedicated to one or the other. Yet, combined they make a unique experience that has made the series so popular.

Also, regarding the army placement issues... I don't see how that's a problem? I do that all the time when I need to (not very often). Just move your army next to another one until there's nomore green-space between them. I've honestly never heard that problem before.

Perhaps one of your commanders doesn't have the night fighter ability? As such if the enemy attacks at night and your armies are near each other and one doesn't have the night fight ability, they cannot reinforce you.

Definately would recommend this game, I pre-ordered it and since I first installed it I havent uninstalled it yet. Out of the box I would have to say that MTW2 was better than vanilla RTW. And since I was a huge Rome Total Realism fan, I can't wait for Medieval 2 Total Realism.

All in all it is well worth the money.

What's the appeal of Rome: Total Realism?

I tried it and loathed it.

Different tastes I suppose, but I found Rome: SPQR far better than any of the other Rome mods, including Europa Barborum.

As for mods and Medieval 2. The best ones I know off the top of my head at the moment are:

Lands to Conquer
Stainless Steel
The Long Road
Animo Domo (sp)
Road to Jeruselam

There's a number of others, but those are the only ones I've tried. Of those, I like Lands to Conquer and Stainless Steel the most.

For more information on mods and pure Total War chat, here's a fine site dedicated to the entire series:

The game is better with mods. I'm playing with the Pro Deo Et Rege mod at the moment which is one of the better ones, despite the lame name.

Most good mods are hosted here and have their own forums:
