View Full Version : New BF2 get-together... Is it possible?

Invictus
5th Jul 07, 12:30 PM
Ok, I've been discussing the possibility of a new BF2 RelicNews get-together in IRC with Tiresias, Nytti and Celtti. I'd like to know if such a thing is possible.

This is basically a feasibility thread to get approximate numbers, times, dates, maps, anyone know of any servers etc. for a future event. However, I don't know the number of people who attended the last event like this, so I'm a bit stuck here.

Basically, this is for people who have some time in the future to join others from this forum for a few games of BF2. However, if the idea hasn't got a lot of popularity, I suppose this will be shelved and put on ice again. It seems to me that its about time we had another friendly union of members having fun together. Although the most likely outcome is that this won't happen for a while, as people are working, going to school/college/university etc. At present, Christmas looks like the guaranteed time where most people have a spare day or so, except for the upcoming school summer holidays if people aren't travelling abroad.

Thoughts on this, anyone?

I want to play but need to re-install my OS.

Would play but I find the crappy server browser and the total lack of friend list in the game a put off.

I was spoilt by Steam, sorry...

I just got the Complete Collection a few days ago because I lost my old BF2. I'm up for a few games, but I'm only free on Sunday afternoons for the forseeable future.

Sorry, but the lack of the fixes that are in BF2142 stop me from playing BF2. The future is the way to go.

I'm up for a couple of games. I usually play 12am - 5am GMT and with my summer holidays I'm available for a game for the next 9 - 10 weeks. So yeah, I'm all for it.

i can reinstall bf2, i just need to get the patches.

BF 2142 all the way for me too. It`s not really better but has a way cooler setting!

I want to play but need to re-install my OS.

Hey, same here! I can't get my comp to play almost any game for more than thirty minutes without the video driver suddenly freezing or outright crashing:/

Anyways, enough moneing. I'm up for it, but it'll have to be in a few weeks, as I'm also in the middle of moving *shrug*

Well,I'll get me and my clan to pop along if there are gonna be a good few people that will put up good fights and enjoyable matches. Christmas?? That's a tad far away.. do we need 5 months to get 64 players?

I wonder why no one ever suggests a Battlefield 1942 reunion? I still play 3 days a week on average. Anyone else still playing? or is every one whoring off to 2142?

if this gets going, i say its in bf2142. (i dont have BF2...)

if it does get going, count me in!

Alliance
7th Jul 07, 2:17 AM
frak BF2142, we wanna play BF2. count me in.

Benjamin
7th Jul 07, 2:38 AM
BF2 is a much better game then 2142, I'm in for sure. Last bf2 get-together was a laugh.
Getting banned from 2 servers for excessive team killing... I'll try not to do that again.

Obtuse better be up for this too ;)

I'm pretty sure I have bf2 still installed, so I'll play whenever (summer break).

The5thElephant
7th Jul 07, 12:38 PM
I'm up for it as long as the time is reasonable and no expansion packs. Pure BF2 all the way.

EST here, best on a weekday evening. Weekends I be partying.

Caesar
7th Jul 07, 12:50 PM
I can buy BF2 complete series for about $30. Is it worth it?

Invictus
7th Jul 07, 2:18 PM
$30? It's double that price in the UK. For $30 I'd buy it without thinking. It is more than worth it, as you get the original game and 3 booster packs to go with it.

The5thElephant
7th Jul 07, 2:25 PM
I've never played any of the booster packs, but BF2 alone is a great game so definitely go for it!

paloozzaa
7th Jul 07, 3:53 PM
Imo 2142 is better but I have 2 installed as well so no probs with either.

roflmao
7th Jul 07, 7:36 PM
Only 2142 for me. Or all the way back to 1942.
How about both?
But if we are going to do this, please set times, not just dates.

Vakarian
8th Jul 07, 5:13 AM
30? It's double that price in the UK

I got mine for £20 notes.

Yeah i am all up for a game of BF2 but like roflmao said if we don't have times then how are we going know when its on?

Dess_Aramea

I would suggest members who are interested get Xfire; its a gamer's msn. Players can track other players on servers and join them. So if I find an empty server I simply join whilst the other group joins me via xfire.

Am up for the gaming too; if anything else for the opportunity to whoop Relic Forum butt! :D

I'm trying to figure out when the majority of people will be able to play, which is why I said the summer break/holidays in my OP (or Christmas, but that is too far away despite being a virtually guaranteed time). The thread is also to gauge numbers of how many people still have BF2 installed and want to play (so yelling for BF2142 for various reasons is a bit counter-productive people :p, unless it actually turns out that more people have BF2142 than BF2).

Vakarian
8th Jul 07, 9:26 AM
unless it actually turns out that more people have BF2142 than BF2).

I have both so it won't bother me which one we play, but i would prefer BF2.

Also we will have to get the timezones right, although that will be a piece of cake.

Penitent
8th Jul 07, 11:29 AM
I'm up for some Bf2.

roflmao
8th Jul 07, 3:22 PM
Inviticus, its productive for me, as its the only chance I get of playing.

Alliance
8th Jul 07, 8:22 PM
But this is a thread for BF2. there have been plenty of BF 2142 grouping ups, but we haven't met up in BF2 for a long while now.

oh. and that thing you just said is like saying its ok to TK because you can't kill any enemies.

Nurizeko
19th Jul 07, 10:01 AM
Bf2 vanilla please, and I'm there.

Invictus
19th Jul 07, 10:03 AM
It will probably be vanilla Nuri; increases the chance of most people being able to play

The5thElephant
19th Jul 07, 10:26 AM
Vanilla for sure. That damn chocolate BF2 confuses me way too much.

But seriously, lets get this going. I would love to take down some of you guys with my l33t spec-ops skills.

SquidDNA
19th Jul 07, 11:32 AM
I'm good for weekends, that's best for transatlantic shenanigans.

Although the last time I played BF2 I was confused by the fact that I couldn't customize my kit and I kept smashing the spacebar to open my parachute.

nyyti
19th Jul 07, 11:45 AM
I'm free almost any time (after I reinstall BF2 and download all the patches..brrr).
This weekend won't work though.

Always happy to kick some ass ^^.

The5thElephant
19th Jul 07, 12:10 PM
Squiddy, set "Q" to parachute, it is easy to hit on instinct for those real low altitude jumps.

Are you guys thinking more Saturday or Sunday? I would prefer Sunday since it is less likely I will be partying it up with friends.

Benjamin
19th Jul 07, 12:17 PM
Yep, vanilla exclusively. I haven't got the other add-ons installed anyway since no one plays them anymore... they're just taking up space.

A Sunday looks like the best bet, it's always a lazy day, a bit of BF2 will do fine to recover from the night before. :D

Latest patch is 1.41 in case you didn't know. DL it here.

Be warned, it's half a gig.

The5thElephant
19th Jul 07, 12:19 PM
How will we decide on server (lag is going to vary for people in different parts of the world) and are we going to use in-game voice or TeamSpeak/Ventrilo?

Benjamin
19th Jul 07, 12:21 PM
Well, what's happened before in meet-ups is people just meet on bf2 channel on IRC, hop on the community TS server & take it from there ;)

The5thElephant
19th Jul 07, 12:25 PM
So who is up for this Sunday? I say around 7-8 EST but that is just ideal for me. I could of course do earlier or later.

Caesar
19th Jul 07, 12:36 PM
Let's play the demo.

Invictus
19th Jul 07, 12:45 PM
A Sunday is the ideal day.

I've been thinking around 7-9 PM GMT, which should give most of the other timezones a lot of scope to be able to play. Thoughts everyone?

nyyti
19th Jul 07, 12:53 PM
Well now that I think of it, I actually COULD make it for Sunday 7-9 PM GMT...propably even earlier.

I vote this date.

Tiresias
19th Jul 07, 1:02 PM
can't make it probably, if it's evening GMT I could be back but possibly not back till monday

Da_Fish
19th Jul 07, 1:06 PM
I'm up for any BF2 meet ups. I just need to install the patches and I'm good to go. Shouldn't there be a week or so notice though?

SquidDNA
19th Jul 07, 1:09 PM
5th, 2142 has parachute set to spacebar, which is convenient since you likely just jumped with it so you already have a thumb on it. I don't set Q to ANYTHING because I usually end up whipping out my knife instead of hitting Q.

Elixir
19th Jul 07, 1:09 PM
This sounds like a date and time I might actually be able to make.

Guess I can dust off thee old sniper rifle for an hour or two.

Invictus

You better watch your six then, Elixir, because I have the Veteran Knife Badge!

Ironwatsas
19th Jul 07, 4:11 PM
Well count me in, I'll try and make it as best I can. This coming Sunday should be good for me, and assuming I make it on time, you'll have yourselves one more gun in the fight.

One potential issue is my lack of Teamspeak, but seeing as I can usually get by with the built in command menu, it should be a non issue.

El Russo
19th Jul 07, 6:07 PM
Not that I play but how about the Londoner's among us meet up for a LAN session somewhere in town? Of course this is an extra option (not an alternative) but if enough members here play BF2 or anything of that ilk I know a couple of decent venues at internet cafes...

-- Russo, thinking outside the box, but still inside the PC ;)

Trizzdog
19th Jul 07, 10:30 PM
I could play Sunday. Don't think I have anything on my plate then.

Antiloop
20th Jul 07, 4:32 AM
Sunday 7-9 GMT is alright for me. I've got Teamspeak. BF2 v1.41 vanilla ready to go. Vacation starting in 2 hours. Let's rock!
Hopefully I wont be to hung over on sunday evening.
Do we have a server?

Benjamin
20th Jul 07, 1:33 PM
Ok, so is it this Sunday y'all were thinking? Or next? I couldn't care less which, but more likely to be able to do it this week.

Some kind of general consensus on the issue of when we do it would be easyer to work around. ;)

Antiloop
20th Jul 07, 3:09 PM
I'm guessing we're talking about this Sunday.

Is there an IRC channel where we can gather before the coming digital conflagration?

The5thElephant
20th Jul 07, 3:12 PM
/me runs into thread and tosses a C4 then runs out cackling holding the detonator.

Vakarian
20th Jul 07, 11:59 PM
Sunday sounds good to me. As long as i (we) know the time and what patches everyone is using then everything should be fine.

Anyone know a good but empty IRC server (can we use a channel on Relicnews IRC?)?

And how about a TS or Ventrilo server?

Benjamin
21st Jul 07, 2:26 AM
No one listerns to me (http://forums.relicnews.com/showpost.php?p=2434692&postcount=38) :(

Yeah, we usely meet up in #bf2 (irc://irc.hwcommunity.com/bf2) on the community IRC server.

We have a community TS server as well, join the channel for the IP.

The5thElephant
21st Jul 07, 2:33 AM
Did somebody just say something?

IcecreamLtDan
21st Jul 07, 1:06 PM
There has been a #bf2 channel in IRC and a TS server BF2 channel on the community TS server since BF2 originally came out. There is even a BF2 forum on the relic boards clanforums.

Ironwatsas
21st Jul 07, 8:31 PM
Okay, let's get this streight. We will be meeting up tomarrow, Sunday July 22nd 2007, between 19:00 to 21:00 UTC (11:00 to 13:00 Watsas Time) on vanilla BF2 without any mods or extra maps, coordinating via IRC and this thread, and will wtfpwnz on one another until such Time as the server is de activated. Do I have all this correct?

If so, then bring it on. Count me in as a Jack of all trades infantry squadleader.

For Relic!

Vakarian
21st Jul 07, 8:59 PM
UTC time isn't that a universal time? So in the Uk i would be joining the Game Between 7.00 and 9.00PM?

Invictus
22nd Jul 07, 3:48 AM
OK I'll try and straighten this:

Times and Communications

1. Sunday July 22nd (may be the morning of 23rd for Australians and the like (I think)).

2. The playing times will be 7PM - 9PM GMT (adjust your times according to your respective timezones).

3. Server(s) shall be defined beforehand on IRC #bf2 channel (I have a few in mind but they're popular).

Game Specs

1. The game shall be BF2 ONLY (no expansion/booster packs).

2. The version of BF2 shall be v1.41 (the latest version).

3. We may or may not establish some informal rules on IRC before playing (little things such as no bunnyhopping, no dolphin diving and no whoring vehicles for yourself).

Hopefully, with everyone's agreement, we shall shift from here to IRC #bf2 for final discussion and arrangement at 6PM GMT (again, adjust to your respective timezones). That is one hour before we shall kick off the event.

As always, all of the above is open to discussion.

Trizzdog
22nd Jul 07, 8:06 AM
I'll probably be late to the event, considering I've been a bad boy and stayed up way too late :nervous:

(Probably join in, in 6 hours-ish...)

deathwings
22nd Jul 07, 9:42 AM
See you on the battlefield

Invictus
22nd Jul 07, 9:57 AM
OK its around 6PM GMT as of this post. Anyone who has IRC and wants to join in should get into the #bf2 channel for any discussions and finalities that might take place.

Ironwatsas
22nd Jul 07, 10:05 AM
What about those of us who don't have IRC?

Benjamin
22nd Jul 07, 10:13 AM
...download it then (http://www.mirc.com/get.html)

Or, you can use the Web based IRC (http://ircatwork.com/) .

Invictus
22nd Jul 07, 10:17 AM
Use the web IRC for ease, less hassle than a full program.

Ironwatsas
22nd Jul 07, 10:17 AM
Done, thanks BB. To #BF2!
