2nd Live action Halo clip (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33762) Saw it at WETA here in NZ, it's looking awesome, but I'm even more pumped for the HD.
Upgraded Brutes, Spiker Guns and OSDT's FTW!

Wait a minute... did I just missed Halo first movie or something?!?!

ZellFish
25th Aug 07, 1:59 AM
No. There are going to be about 4 or 5 of these, according to the Wiki, released by the Halo Movie director, in unison with WETA (The digital arts company who did CG and props for LoTR and King Kong). They're using these to lead up to Halo 3's release, along with hoping to encourage studios to look at the ability being put into the clips.

The first movie is available, like this one, on YouTube, along with being available under the Halo section of your Xbox Live, under Videos and Media.

ODSTs? I thought they looked like MK IV versions of the cheif's suit (the ones that are going to appear in the RTS halo game).

robnubis
25th Aug 07, 3:22 AM
Nah it clearly said ODST's on their armour.

I have to say i really like it, so far its kept in tone with some of his other work, and i'd love to see what he could do with a feature length film...imo it could possibly be the greatest game to film adaptation ever.

They're ODST marines (http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/ODST) , the first video showed them gearing up.

ODST's (Orbital Drop Shock Troops) are exactly like the storm Troopers in 40k (Better armor slightly better guns and Deep strike lol)

Or like Heinlein's Mobile Infantry.

I got a distinct Starship Troopers and Space: Above and Beyond feel from that. especially the latter, what with the way the shuttles look and the near-future sci-fi thing going on.

neat!

I was sort of hoping they'd look like the MK. IV the main character wears in the Marathon series, as a homage (even though Wiki says the two games' armors have nothing at all to do with each other). Oh well. Maybe it'll show up as some custom armor in Halo 3's multiplayer.

Humans: Using cover, being fast, using tactics.
Aliens: Standing in the open waiting to be blasted.

Because the Aliens think Humans are stupid and weak for using cover.

Plus there's so few humans that they don't feel threatened by them.

DatonKallandor

They get cut down pretty good though. I don't think any species that survived long enough to have armor would not go for cover when the guy next to them explodes from bullet impacts.

Zallis

Yeah.... it seems foolish considering the whole point of armour, when you get down to it, is like a form of mobile cover.

A squad of ODSTs was engaging Brutes. Banshees were circling overhead blasting them with Fuel Rods, so they called in for a Warthog. A Pelican landed nearby and dropped one off, and two of them managed to get in it and retreat/regroup.

That's about what I could tell. As for why the Brutes were standing in the open, think about their name. They're BRUTES. They don't strategize or do anything clever. That's what Elites would do. Brutes just run out and kill. The most they do in Halo 3 is a Pack mentality.

As for the videos, I think they're really cool. I really like how effectively they're making Halo into live-action. It's really believable. I also like how detailed the UNSC stuff is. You can see more of that in the 1st video, where factories are making Sniper Rifles and Warthogs, and the Marines are gearing up.

and SPF armor version:

Well actually it won't let me show a screen, just scroll through the pictures on that first link, theres a good picture of a guy in SPF armor in a multiplayer game.

there is also going to be elite custom skins...haven't seen those yet though.

Starblade
25th Aug 07, 11:59 AM
Erm, last I checked, Bungie hadn't said how many different armors the Spartan or Elite models could use, and you only showed one (whereas a gaming magazine, EGM, showed at least three). I know that helmet wise, the Spartans can use the normal Chief one, the Spartan 3.0 one, and one that looks suspiciously like Samus's off of her Varia Suit. Elite-wise, I know they have a few but can't think of anything specific, though if I recall correctly, one helmet covers the whole of the Elite's face. I can only assume you misunderstood me, because you were talking about the exact same sort of thing (different armors to wear during multiplayer), only I was hoping that Marathon's Mjolnir Mk. IV would be a choice to wear.

ZellFish
25th Aug 07, 5:58 PM
the announced armor variants are The Chiefs normal armor, CQB armor (close Quarters Battle (The full headed visor) and the EVA armor (Extra Vehicular Activity), shown with the "Samus" like helmet. CQB armor is mainly light, and for scouts\snipers. EVA is for drivers\Rocketeers\heavy infantry. Of course, that's just back story. It doesn't affect your online abilities.

25th Aug 07, 6:30 PM
The movie certainly spanks of WIP- the banshees were moving so fast I could hardly tell what they were (outside of an eyeblink).

As for Halo3, I suspect portions of the model will be customizable- specifically something like helmet from one body and chest plate from another.

There are several elite variants out... check it out on the Wiki. Elites, I know, at least have a version of the "full-face visor" that the chief uses.

How come they always portrait aliens as idiots in those movies?
Humans: Using cover, being fast, using tactics.
Aliens: Standing in the open waiting to be blasted.

Brutes, are well Brutes. They have very lethal and brutal weapons, but they are also very inaccurate. The Brute Spiker is only effective up to 40 meters, making it more inaccurate than any modern day weapon, so obviously they aren't too bright or skilled at making weapons. They need to close in to actually dish out some damage. Brutes are also overconfident. They have more strength than a Superhuman Soldier, so they are cocky.

DatonKallandor
25th Aug 07, 7:52 PM
So they are retards. When I notice that I'm too far away to hit anything with my weaponry, not to mention use my superstrenght to get some headsmashing in, I close in. Unless I've got the brain capacity of a peanut - but why the hell am I on a battlefield then?

BeserkWraithlor

Its a movie promoting Halo 3, and you are on the Human Side who is fighting a losing war, as you can tell most of mankind is destroyed you should see some reisistance and some payback. Also, those Marines are Elite Commandos, Helljumpers they should be able to kick some Brute ass.

Also, you see Brutes shooting at the marines at a close distance, the Marines simply had better reaction time and accuracy, which is what made them win the shootout.

The Brutes also called for air support, look at the part where the explosion knocks the marines down. They called in Banshees to attack, but the marines were lucky enough to survive with some wounds.

ZellFish
25th Aug 07, 8:48 PM
Its a movie promoting Halo 3,

No, No, it's not. It's part of a series of short films being produced by Neill Blomkamp , the director of the soon-to-be-in-production-maybe Halo 3 film. He's showing these to gain studio attention so that the project may be set back on track, along with promoting the Halo 3 video game over Xbox Live. They are also, more or less likely, designed to help fuel the hype, to help improve said studios interest in producing a Halo movie.

I mean, think about it. When studios see the fan base support, and the amazing sales for Halo 3, they'll get right behind the movie.

DatonKallandor

Edit: Actually, that's not true, I did play Halo1 on a borrowed Xbox. Completely forgettable game experience. This is border line down syndrome, The fact that we are arguing why the brutes aren't in cover in the 3 mins of footage of that clip is absolutely retarded. For all we know they could have been advancing.

As for the Stat's on brutes they have so-so accuracy but excel in beating the crap outa you in close range combat (which is the reason they put bayonets on everything) so I've assume they where assaulting the OSDT's position and not just standing to be shot. OR the more LOGICAL reason was for dramatic effect.

DatonKallandor
26th Aug 07, 12:31 AM
The dramatic effect of random guys jumping to cover and shooting and stationary, defenseless black silhouettes - how impressive to the people that don't know Halo.

See, dramatic effect is, when your heroes overcome odds stacked against them. Duck Hunt is not dramatic effect.

Rukoth
26th Aug 07, 12:35 AM
On top of that by the looks of it the Aliens were not expecting the humans. They were rummaging through wreckage when they came under attack. Probably didn't have time to get into cover even if they had wanted to.

Plus they had air support, were probably thinking they were giving them cover.

Daton, I doubt people not into Halo are going to over analyze and criticize it like you have.

Those ODST's called for evac. They probably got lucky killing those brutes.

CommodoreKitty
26th Aug 07, 12:40 AM
If people don't like Halo now, they probably never will. Regardless, it was a short cinematic that cannot be analyzed with any degree of accuracy due to being so short. Maby the brutes were advancing? Maby they were stoned? The point is they got shot and it makes a pretty scene. Stop overanalyzing it.

Starblade

Oh for fuck's sake.

You see, maybe, one second in total of the aliens "not in cover". "Oh this sucks look they're not following FM 90-10 for urban combat lol my e-penis just grew". We lack context for this situation, so we have no idea what or why they are acting the way the are. Yet this one second glimpse of alien behavior is enough to generate harsh criticism of a movie that isn't even made yet.

I think we just hit a new low.

The only real harsh criticism is by the few on this thread that hate halo that bothered posting.

Honestly, this isn't a do you like/dislike thread for halo.

On to the movie. That first one Win_Imperial is pretty interesting.....the second one was more erratic. But from what I saw the Brutes were looking through wreckage when they came under attack. One of them had lifted up some junk when the ODST's first attacked.

The ODST's probably fired on the Brutes for cover fire and happened to take them out.

Master Chief
26th Aug 07, 12:26 PM
That seemed like what was happening to me, too. I thought that the fuel rod and the Banshees looked fine, they were pretty cool. However, I couldn't really see if it left a mark on the ground. The fuel rod "glasses" ground and stone on impact, melting the surface. Not that it really matters.

What I'm wondering is, what was tracking those ODSTs? Do you think it was the Banshees, the Pelican, or something else entirely? My guess would be the Pelican or maybe a UNSC satellite.

And seriously, listen to Starfisher. You can't say anything about what those Brutes were doing because they were in view for a few seconds before being shot.

Win_Imperial
26th Aug 07, 12:29 PM
I personally thought the needler shots were the coolest.

As for what was tracking the ODSTs, it was probally a UNSC craft because the symbols didn't look alien.

The5thElephant
26th Aug 07, 12:40 PM
I'm more curious about how strong Brutes and Elites will be in such a movie. Brutes don't have shields, but it still takes many hits into a fleshy area to kill them. However here it appeared that a couple shots into an un-armored area will work. While that is true for an Elite, I think Brutes should be more difficult to kill even if you hit them in unprotected areas (except the head which is insta-kill of course).

Master Chief
26th Aug 07, 12:43 PM
I'd have to agree with that. The Brutes are much stronger and larger physically, so it should take more shots to unarmored areas to take them down. Kinda like how it is in Halo 2 in terms of firepower needed, but maybe not that much.

ZellFish
26th Aug 07, 1:05 PM
I want to see a clip with the Hunters in it. Takes about 6 grenades and sustained turret fire to take one of them down. Let's see us some Helljumpers do that!

Master Chief
26th Aug 07, 3:17 PM
Oooh, that would be really cool to Hunters in this! The Hunters could run up and bash a Marine and send him flying as the others circle around and open up, pouring fire onto the Hunters as they spin around and fire their Fuel Rod Cannons, sending beams of death across the ODSTs positions.

Another thing I want to see is the Gauss Warthog and the Scorpion. Those would be really awesome, especially the Scorpion. The Elephant would just be beyond awesome, but it seems too massive in scale for something like this. They could just CG it though instead of building one like the Warthog.

Sastrei

The Elephant is a new UNSC vehicle used in the multiplayer map Sandtrap. It's a giant mobile base, with respawn points, flag points, and machine gun turrets. It is also drivable, so it drastically changes CTF strategies. For example, you could do the old thing and just run from your base to their base, OR you could drive your base into their base and hop onto it to take the flag. Here's a pic:

I dont see why people are looking for reasoning behind the actions and events in the short, its just a short.

These are basically an early glimpse at what the final film may look like, both visually and stylistically. Its primary purpose is to stir up interest in the halo movie, secondary use is promotion of the Halo franchise, currently Halo 3 could be said to be getting publicity from these.

I dont see this short as anymore than just a quick look at what an action scene from the halo movie will look like, theres no complex underlying plot, just running, shooting and driving :)

SquidDNA
27th Aug 07, 4:15 AM
So action scenes from a Halo movie will be poorly shot and confusing? AWESOME.

Shakycam is fine when you're trying to heighten tension in a scene that isn't already visually tense. But here we have armored soldiers running around and shooting. It's tense, alright? Unless you're just trying to cover up the fact that you didn't put a lot of effort into the set, let people look at it and ditch the fucking shakycam.

SquidDNA
27th Aug 07, 7:24 AM
I don't care if it's WIP or not-- they need to change the direction, in my opinion. We don't have a jumble of images from multiple cameras in a game, why should we have them in a movie about the game? It only serves to obscure. Maybe I'm supposed to be left wishing there was more, but I'm merely irritated.

I mean, it worked in Children of Men because there was ONE camera perspective from the time they started coming down the stairs out of the room where they'd stayed the night, all the way to the scene where the army starts resumes the assault on the building where she's been taken, and the "journalist shitting his pants" feel worked here. The man was running, absolutely surrounded by danger but trying to save the only thing in the world that mattered anymore, to anyone. Here we're looking at two elite soldiers trying to retrieve something under heavy fire. I'm not saying that's not a stressful situation just because they're elite, I'm saying that the "journalist" perspective only works if you're trying to immerse yourself into the role of a journalist along for the ride. It didn't work here.

Between this and the other thread, we probably ought to have a new one about shakycam. Sorry.

Starblade
27th Aug 07, 11:28 AM

Wow, that's an awesome idea. It'd add a good bit of variety if Bungie had gone with Elephant vs. Elephant, Elephant vs. Scarab, and Scarab vs. Scarab modes. That the Scarab only has the one large cannon as a good weapon would make up for its lack of anything else.

CoatedTrout
28th Aug 07, 6:19 AM
Aw, why can't the other base be a Scarab? That'd be so much cooler

Firstly, I reckon it would be a tad imbalanced, since the elephant is much smaller than the scarab and only has a few manned turrets, while the scarab has an anti-everything gun.

Secondly, the elephant can only placed on one map, sandtrap. So I don't think it's worth it for bungie put such effort into making the scarab drivable just for one MP map. Of course, if they do impliment it into MP and it is balanced nicely, It would be great.

I know it impressed the hell out of me, I like the soldier cam thing it puts you there with the soldiers in a way. That video was alright but I thought it would have been cooler if they had the assault rifle from the original Halo game, and there was three of those marines, so that way one of them could have put that minigun on the back of the Warthog to good use and downed those Banshees!

And on the note of preferred shooting style, I'd like to see a mix of Children of Men and Band of Brothers action sequences. The one shot camera style at the end battle in the refugee camp in Children of Men was really amazing.

Still looks to me like a giant WIP clip to boost hype and to show off the content of what they have so far.

As a fan I could nitpick the clip for it's 'accuracy' to the rest of Halo's universe, but for now I'll just say I hope the final product has a lot more thought put into it than this clip displays.

A good start though.

And what exactly would you have done different, oh mighty director Norsehound? :p

Definitely has a fake feel (something about the film type), but the effects look much nicer. I love the fuel rod impact on the wall, made me flinch. :)

If Ironman got a thread for his trailer/clip why not this film?

I'd say it looks good on some levels and bad on others. Either way it's going to make a lot of money.

Sorry dude, its not from the movie. Its a series of shorts produced to market Halo 3.

I was directed by the man they got to direct the halo movie, because now the movies been put on hold he hasn't had alot to do.

It was made on a small budget, and as such does not look as impressive as an actual film would. But hey, if this is what can be done with a reduced budget, just think what the film with its 148 million doller budget (presuming it gets taken on by a studio some time soon) would be like!

Boring? There's a reason some of the industry's best writers couldn't pen a worthwhile script, Master Chief would make the characters in the Resident Evil movies look like something out of Proust.

Last I heard the entire movie was on hold, that still the case?

Nice visuals but tells nothing other then "Human soliders can't hold a 60 square meter area against some apes and a horribly disfigured gorilla".

Master Chiefs never meant to have been an interesting character. A cool one yes, an interesting back story yes, but personality wise no.

Cortana and the marines, in contrast as ful of life, and they provide the interesting characters in contrast to master cheifs dull one. The marines and Cortana are just as much as part of the story as the Chief. Therefore you have Him for the action scenes, and them for the talky scenes.

Also there were several scripts written that were considered to be very good. The reason the film fell through is because studios are nervous of video game to movie adaptions because of previous history and because of this Fox and Universal (who had joint distrubution rights) did a U-turn on bungie and microsoft last minute, leaving them with reduced rights to profit from the film, therefore not holding up thier end of the deal, and as such microsoft pulled out.

Edit: Also Peter Jackson is confident that with the release of Halo 3, the film will get back on track.

Im guess you haven't read the books? THe Master Chief is actually a surprisingly interesting character...to me at least. Sure Cortana is more intelligent and talks more, but I wouldn't go so far as to say all the Chief is good for is shooting stuff.

I've read the Fall of Reach. I am just of the opinion that the supporting characters are more interesting. I love chief to bits. He's atrue bad ass.

But badass does not an interesting character make.

The spikes should explode like bolter rounds! Which they do in the game.

The games make me chuckle but movies would be good. I think five would be taking the piss, however.

As per usual though, every person who speaks is American. These things are better for Americans, that's who they're about - futuristic hyperyanks. Everyone else feels distanced.

On a side note, the soldiers are part of the UNSC, the United Nations Space Command. I would think everyone in a squad speaks the same language, as I imagine it would be hard for a Spanish guy to understand his Russian speaking commander, who in turn can't understand a word the Italian guy is saying, who's long since stopped paying attention to the British guy and the Japanese guy because he just doesn't speak that many languages, and he'll be damned if he's going to try.

But damn it, space gorillas weren't interesting in Halo 2, and they still aren't interesting now. Though, they could be.

I'm sure I remember an Aussie soldier in Halo 1, so they might go down the route of different English speaking accents.

Starblade

They did that in Halo 2 as well. I don't think two soldiers had the same accent in that game.

The clip isn't spectacular, but it does show that the director is willing to make it "look" and "feel" like Halo. I just have a false sense of hope that the movie [if there is ever one] reveals the true intent of the Spartan project just like the books, which would eliminate the lopsided and often done moral view that heroes are made to fight against a common evil. The movie needs depth... :read:
