GW has just put out a addon for Warhammer called Mighty Empires is this like the original mighty empires game put out in the early 90's or is it differnt? has anyone gotten this addon??

Or tried it.?

That's for Warhammer Fantasy Based, not Warhammer 40,000 as far as I can tell. Since this is a primarily 40k board I would guess that most haven't played that expansion.

Mighty empires is not the same game released earlier, This is an optional expansion (that goes by the same name) that provides some basic rules fro fighting campaigns at home, with easily modifiable rules, and also comes with a modular map.

it wouldn't be too hard to adapt it to 40k though.

having different maps to represent the different planets in a system would be a good idea.

But do you really fight for control over a planet with a skirmish? I think it can be adapted, but keep it planetary. The rules for the original, more advanced game are free to download at GW.
