Howdja celebrate? How many kids did you get willing to trade tooth-rotting catalysts for not torching your car? Is it getting calmer as time passes are you just as psycho around your parts as always?

Personally I dressed my son as a spider and ate cake at his play group this morning.

Thankfully I avoided the trick or treaters this evening as I was locked in a secure building with security guards on duty with the toffees.

As for burning cars I grew out of that weeks ago.

Nothing. I don't even know when exactly Halloween supposedly happens.

It's surprising how a celebration that's supposed to remember and cherish the dead turned into children running around pleading for teeth-rotting-catalysts, as retro exquisitely put it, when in the hands of capitalists. :p

It totally depends on your reasons for dressing up. I almost did for a halloween party, does that make everyone there a loser?

I'm taking time to relax after a bunch of philosophy papers, and catching up on more readings. I haven't done anything for halloween in years.

I played (and still am) Dwarf Fortress >.<

Halloween never was big until 3-4 years ago here, I never really experienced it as a kid where I live, tho now it's becoming very popular. Tho, I wont do anything for it anyway, not alone thats boring :p.

Maybe in a few years, if I go live with my girlfriend, she likes to dress up and all. Together it can prove to be fun times at Halloween, but currently I wont bother.

Think I'll play Dungeon Keeper...

Yes, it's 2.40 am for me, and I have lectures tomorrow from 10-4, but I think I'll play a few games, just for Halloween purposes.

Got meself a large Halloween party at the Student Union bar tomorrow (It's being done tomorrow, because the bar closes at 12 on wednesdays, but stays open until 2 on Thursdays). I've got my scythe all prepared and blood-stained. Jus need some black body-paint...

More for you!
Better for you to stuff your face with it, than some twerp-in-a-cape, who doesn't really deserve any of your candy, essentially blackmailing you to give them sweets.

Muller: Halloween was my favorite holiday as a kid. Getting sanction to dress up and play pretend (Since my mother HATED that sort of play, and wouldn't allow me any other time of the year... Stuck my costumes away in the closet for the rest of the year on the basis of wanting to keep them in good condition for next year, as if there was ever a year where they still fit... And I'd get in trouble if I got them down again during the year... grrrr) was a huge deal to me. Running around after dark, pretending to be a vampire or wizard or whatever that year happened to be was a major highlight to me.

Since I'm now a grownup, getting to see the little ones having their fun and see their faces light up when I give out big handfuls of candy (I always stock up a huge amount so that I can give each kid a bunch, not just one little mini-hershey's or whatever) is the only way I get to participate.

So it's rather depressing to me when nobody comes.

But what can I do... I live in a second floor apartment and people can't always figure out how to get to my door...

Bet your the life and soul of any party.

Dressing up is fun, especially if you really make an effort, are orginal and go with friends. Dressing up as the guys from a Clockwork Orange is not fucking original, stop it for christs sake. As was said in Buffy, Haloween is the only time of the year one can become someone else. A theme that was demonstrated by my use of masks.

I played beer pong with some friends, but not enough to get absolutley shitfaced, a nice buzz if you will. Throughout this period we had little 7 year olds trick or treating. We are poor students so all we could give them was instant noodles and salt and vinegar crisps, the dissapointment in their faces was pretty depressing. Then I went to the Student nightclub type thing (UEA WAterfront represent!) with 2 of my mates as Splicers from Bioshock. Creepy ass venetian masks, suits, white shirt and boe tie. Had a blast, the pretty girls commenting on the quality of my cotume, as well as the guy who I genuinley creeped out by moving my head like a bird and saying 'Jesus loves me this I know' were both huge ego boosters.

It was great fun, and I eagerly await the facebook photo's tomorrow.

Stick a sign on your window saying "I have much candy! Go to [insert directions here]" ;)

At uni, me and my mate want to put up a sign saying "This is SPARTA!", in the window, in fake-blood.

Of course, I can understand ur enjoyment as seeing other people happy. I know what you mean. Though I myself have never really felt it, I can understand the fun of seeing kids enjoying a holiday/event, and essentially getting involved in the holiday, and in way... becoming a kid again.
I'm just a cynical bastard, I'm afraid.

So please take my previous post with a sprinkle of sarcasm and cynisism :) and I hope u get either a few late-comers or many next year

Also, Pally, there's nothing saying you can't go downstairs and set up a chair and folding table and take a good book to read for an hour or two. :)

I usually find the best kids are in the 5-to-7 year old range, although the parents that care enough to costume up their 3-year-olds are often a huge bit of fun because their kids look so funny as they figure out what the hell to do.

I had a couple 12-year-olds with snarky attitude, though. One actually gave me some full-of-herself lip and really exasperated me because she asked a question about my hallowe'en decorations (a red floodlight mounted inside a cobwebbed 4' plastic playhouse in our lobby that gives it a bright and spooky glow), I answered it, and then she insulted it with a "whatever" sort of reply. I told her as she walked away "You know, it's for the little kids to enjoy. Maybe you're just too old to be trick-or-treating?". But shortly after, a 6 year old saw it and jumped up and down smiling and saying "I remember this from last year!", and made my night.

Also, I played this loudly on the speakers occasionally. It's awesome for setting the mood -
Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ipzR9bhei_o
[Retrowife plays it on the piano sometimes and I sit there and just smile.]

Retrotyke #1, who's 7, was an absolute delight all evening as she bounced around the house in her black cat costume. Retrotyke #2 went as a tree frog thanks to a customized green jumper, some cardboard cutouts stuck to gloves and boots for webbed toes, and two ping-pong balls for eyes. And we had 131 kids (I count so I'll know how much candy to buy next year). All-in-all, a good bit of fun.

I feel pretty bad about the whole affair- I was so shattered after work yesterday that I basically flopped and sat on the bed playing BioShock all night, until I got up, had dinner and watcher Heroes. We didn't get any kiddies at the door, although that may have been something to do with the "Warning: Paedophile" sign I hung up [nb. not true]. I think there's meant to be some sort of party in town tonight that I'm meant to be going to. Not sure how up for it I am, but if I go, I've been inspired by whoever it was that mentioned it to try going as a Splicer- thanks for the idea!

I got 11 healthy fruit bars from Waitrose supermarket and distributed them all with glee to various callers aged between 5 and 17 ! Most with parents hovering nervously in the background.

I advertised by putting a shrivelled pumpkin head in my window (last years hollowed out pumpkin left to dry).

Made one slip up though as I could not resist eating the last banana and date fruit bar and then a lone trick or treater turned up and I had to apologise for having run out of goodies.

Also 'forgot' (read couldnt be bothered) to shave and I am not sure who was most startled when I opened the door as I suspect I looked a bit less like a fashionably unshaven footballer and a bit more like a vagrant of no fixed abode who had lucked out finding an empty house to doss down in ;)

Poor Paladin, better luck next year, maybe need to advertise your wares, or organise a Halloween party so that people will have an excuse to lean out the window and shout kind invitations at passers by.

The influx of tricker-or-treaters was drastically down this year. I celebrated Halloween a week ago with a costume party. Last night I listened to my girlfriend practice Chopin, Mozart, and a modern composer I didn't much care for, for her graduate recital. Oh, and I helped myself to a some of the leftover candy. I love Halloween.

A 40k costume is one that will really only work if everyone gets the reference. Its not ideal to have to keep explaining it all the time. Thats why the splicer costumes worked, because even if people hadn't played Bioshock, they would still work as costumes. I should be able to share some photos presently.

Ha, I gave out candies with my headcrab hat on. I'd have put on a white shirt and covered it with paint for blood, but amazingly I don't have one. And one person thought it was a spider, but oh well.

I saw a couple funny costumes, though. One guy came dressed up as a washing machine, and another just took apart a pumpkin, and taped/glued the pieces onto himself. He was even holding a pumpkin mustache up to his face. Best costume I saw all day.

I ended up with 3-4 bags of candy left, though, even after giving out fistfuls to everyone. Oh well, more for me. :D

Correct. That's the one :)

Blue torso, sparkly wings and a blood-stained scythe. I initially had a hand covered in blood (To mimic 40K Eldar Avatar, and become the bloody-handed archangel of death)

However, despite the attention I got from several women who wanted pictures with me(YES!!!!! :D), the best costume of the night was my mate's:
A Transformer
It was absolutely awesome. He attached several crates to himself, and he was able to crouch down and become a lorry near-perfectly! :) Awesome costume!

@Sabaku
What? Girls have a latent desire to be slutty, but wish to avoid the negative judgement?
No. What they have is a desire for attention from the opposite sex (We all do)
Dressing and acting slutty at a party generates attention from many, many blokes. So they do it
However, they cannto do that sorta stuff in real life, because they get labelled as sluts: Thus: negative reputation
At parties, it's a different game, and they can blame alcohol, so it's generally socially acceptable to do so.
