View Full Version : Complete idiot trying to figure out his router.

As the title says I am nearly completely computer handicapped and all I know is that I am unable to play due to my router. It's been the trouble for a few other of my games as well. I know it's not a firewall issue as they all played fine before I got the router.
So anyway I have no idea what I need to do in order to fix this. I've tried already but I get stuck at the very first step at portforward.com where it says to find your Static IP address. I can't even get that going.
Sigh... anyone have any ideas? Am I on the right path or? I don't know and I'm afraid to even mess with anything like IP addresses on my comp.

Ok I'll give this a go.
First you have to find out the address for your router, which you will type into your internet browser where you would usually type website addresses.
For example I would type:
10.1.1.1
in the address bar as I have a D-Link router, but for other routers it will be different (eg Linksys is 192.168.1.1)
You will probably have to type in a username/password, usually admin/admin if it is the default settings.
Now look for the name of your computer to find out what your ip address is.
eg I would go to 'advanced' and then 'Lan Clients' where it would say:
10.1.1.4 MYCOMPNAME
this is the IP address (10.1.1.4 in my case) that you will set your fowarded ports to.
Now look around in your router for an option to foward ports to your IP address.
For me it is 'advanced' then 'virtual server' then 'user', but it would depend on what type of router you have, so I can't really help you too much here. If you can get this far then you will be able to set the ports required and should be able to play online.
Good Luck :)
ps if you can't figure out how to foward port to your IP address then there should be an option to set your IP address to a DMZ, which means 'de-militarised zone', and is basically the same as fowarding all of your ports.
pps if you're still not sure of something say what type of router you have and maybe I can help you further
http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=63593 this may help if you haven't seen it already ;)

Well using your help I can now get online but now I have a new problem.
Any game I try to enter it says the host could not be found/may have quit hosting and to check and make sure i have correct router/firewall settings.
Not exact words, if you need exact I'll get them.
Man so close :(

Right i had the same problem. Now u can get online u have to do the net tester (the link final phase posted) and post your results here. Compare your results to the 'Good' results in the same link.
If "NAT detcted" appears you have a problem.

Alright I did the test and this is what I got, obviously something's not right.
Sending udp packetfrom 6116 ti 6112
Waited with no reply, make sure udp port 6112 is port forwarded.
-_- ... I can't even get a normal error.

I noticed something weird with the guide, while the original talks about port 6112, the post by Hordak does not, what gives?

I dont know, but what i do know is that i think there is something wrong with your computer or routers firewall, Verdius. there is something blocking this port so i suggest you turn off all the firewalls you have and try again. Worked for me...

I have to be honest, this isn't the first time I've tried to turn off my firewall (I have McAfee) and I really do not know how to. It almost seems to lack that option in the newer version I have.
... Could it be an issue with Vista's autprotection BS?

As for disabling Mcafee, try this http://help.expedient.com/general/disable_firewall.shtml.
Im not too sure about the Vista auto protection thing though

Alright I managed to disable the firewall from McAfee. Did the test, got the same results. Tried online, got the same results.
Could my router possibly have a firewall? I remember someone telling me about enabling specific programs to pass through them or something.
By the way I really appreciate your help guys.

no problem mate. And yes your router may have a firewall. you can try disabling that as well or you can open the required ports. these are the following ports you need to unlock (there may be more however)
udp port 6500
udp port 27900
udp port 27901
udp port 29910
tcp port 6667
tcp port 28910
tcp port 29900
tcp port 29901
tcp port 29920
if you need help unlocking the ports try this website http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm or ask for any more help

Ok however do I have to name the file I'm allowing the port to go through or anything like that?
When I first got through to where I'm at now my friend had me name it darkcrusade.exe
So... do I need to do the same or is it unnecessary?
Also .... I think I need both the Start and End numbers? like 6500/6500? I'll get a screen show to show you what I'm talking about....

Right, fill it out like this

It should work, it worked for me anyway. bear in mind though my application is slightly different to this one but that shouldnt matter.
After youve saved, turn off your firewall(s) and it should work

the last thing i can think of is blocking windows firewall and defender. By any chance, have you upgraded your pc from xp to vista? Or is it a newly bought pc?

Completely new, came with Vista. I'd have no idea how to shut down window's firewall and defender...

Head to Control Panel > Windows Firewall
'Change Settings' > turn it off > remember to click 'OK i'm sure' on the various hassling pop-ups.
Head to User Accounts within Control Panel next
Click on your username and then onto 'turn User Account Control on/off' > disable it.
Finally for Windows Defender, Control Panel > Windows Defender
Disable it.

Alright... first two down.... The defender however isn't giving me the option. If I do anything to it, it just begins scanning my computer.
Also... won't this put my computer at risk?

It will leave your system more likely to suffer from an encounter with a malicious piece of software.
All in all, I have turned off all security in Vista, and am running 'Trend Micros PC-cillin' with my router set to DMZ mode. I have had no problems with anything malicious, whether human or software.

Reading what Ground zero posted gave me an idea. Im almost certain that if you put your router into DMZ mode online will work. Unfortunatly every router is different so im not sure how do do it on your set up. Unless you state what router you have and some one knows how to do it, your best bet is to look on the internet or your instruction bookfor help.

Haven't tried the DMZ idea just yet, I'll try tonight.
As a side note I have been able to play automatches but for whatever reason still keeping me from any others.

DMZ will essentially make all communications unhindered, no matter for good or ill. I use a decent Software Firewall which doesn't interfere with games or programs, which bulks out my security (Trend Micro).

Alright, apparently it was already Disabled. I enabled it again just for kicks. No change. Set it back to normal for now...
Sigh, I want to kill whoever made Routers work in such an annoying way.
