View Full Version : Relic's New Strategy Project [untitled] (X360, Wii, PS3)

I was just reading the sister's preview at Gamespy when I stumbled at this:
http://www.gamespy.com/company/026/026600.html
Personally after the Outfit I was sure that Relic will do another console project, bear in mind that they said that they would like to enter the next-gen market. However as far as I know no official info is released at this moment, even an announcement of a work in progress.
If this is a old info - delete the thread. If not - discuss. :)
Edit: IGN has the same info but they are part of the same network as gamespy.

This is most certainly the the Forestry Sim. Or it could be Hello Kitty 40k. Or some new IP from relic. Who knows. Interesting that it's on all three platforms. Pretty much all of relic's games have been exclusively PC and the Outfit was an 'OK' 360 game. For something that is cross-platform its got to be big. Given that everything is pure speculation; why the hel would you release something on the Wii. It's sub-par everything in terms of hardware and capabilities in comparison to the PC/360/PS3.
Also in before Buggo's ^_____^ response.

I just did a little research and there is info from mid 2006 that Relic are "keeping a close eye on the consoles". A Dawn of War, Company of Heroes port was considered. They were saying that they prefer the 360 and the ps3, because they are more mature platforms, but the Wii is considered also. Just Google relic and ps3 for example.
Game sites don't always have the exact info, sometimes when a release date is unknown they put 31 December of the year they think it's going to be released. Or when there is no info about on witch platform a game is going to be released they put every one etc. Don't think that because Gamespy says it's a 360, ps3 and Wii, it's true.
....damn gotta work on my English writing skills

An untitled strategy project.. not for the PC ? Has Relic betrayed us and joined the hordes of the faithless ? Certainly hope not, but then, this is quite early and a bit of a weird discovery.. so hopefully things will change, but again, if it is for the Wii and the consoles.. could mean it isn't anything important.

Looking a Relic right now, it is only releasing games from old, but good, engines. I suspect that Relic may turn on PC gaming like everything else, seeing the trends and the potential success of EndWar. Relic is due to update DOW, right now they're just milking it, and COH is just, in the end, another take on a overused genre.
Relic used to have a lock on Space combat sims, now a small company has completely upstaged Relic. Relic will probably stick with the more profitable WW2 and WH40k games and shift those over to consoles rather than take a risk with any HW style game.
Though I would be very happy if I am wrong.

If they do something similar to Battalion Wars which is the closest to a decent RTS on a console it could be quite good...whatever it is. maybe a Homeworld spinoff focusing on small-scale battles and individual ships more.

Liso, only thing standing is that consoles outsell PCs are are impossibly more user friendly. Look at textures/resolutions/AA and AF from high end PC games on high end machines. Way above anything achievable by PS3 or X360.
Strategy games dont do well on consoles. They somehow made it so that FPS sell more on consoles than on PCs, but I dont think such a act of illusionary magic is achievable with RTSs.

Personally, I'm looking forward to this. In my head I've worked up a whole scenario. It's called "The Outlet." Karen S'jet has just disconnected from the Mothership for the first time, and is just dying to go shopping. However, partway through her madcamp shopping spree, she starts to run low on power! Oh no, whatever is a wirehead to do? So begins Karen's epic quest through the strip mall to find an outlet with enough power to recharge her and let her finish her epic shopping spree. Brought to you by Clive Barker.

I agree with the bold, which begs the question as to why you posted the above, fanboy. ;)
Sarcasm and insincerity doesn't come over well on the net, I guess. :reporter:
I wouldn't mind having a 360, Halo games are more fun on consoles anyway. I just don't have £200+ to acquire one on a whim, and they don't have nearly enough features to peak my interest to save up.
Kinda like that Covenant plasma rifle... (http://www.firebox.com/product/2010)
Seriously though, for Relic to release a new RTS on everything but the PC is to spit in the face of every loyal repeat customer who have stuck by them since the first game.
Thankfully it just seems to be a PC - Console port.

So, I seriously doubt that it is a Dawn of War port, simply because, let's face it, it's an ancient engine, console gamers, don't like shitty graphics. A Company of Heroes Port - well just announce it and be over with it, this wouldn't be a breaking news like a announcement of a new game for example. So I think it's a new IP or The Outfit 2, but I have my reservations about the possibility of the later. Time will tell.

Homeworld racing/piloting/shooting game.
I touched upon this in the other thread, where you race and shoot your way through courses in a 3D micro-machines type of game, but set in the Homeworld universe, which has more than enough fluff and backstory. Will sell on consoles, will work on pc's with mice with a proper control scheme, and will make the homeworld universe more popular, so it's a win-win situation. I'm all up for a another homeworld RTS, but as Uber keeps on pointing out, the mental requirements to fully take advantage of the 3D environment is not wide-spread among the gaming demographic, and is usually limited to us men, which means little profit for THQ/Relic.

I think the 3d camera control of HW would work fairly well with console controllers. I can actually imagine HW2 on an X-Box controller, using the analog sticks to replace the RMB rotation. Certainly better than the precision management needed for successfully playing CoH.
SubZero
22nd Feb 08, 4:40 AM
Hmm, the analogue sticks on the 3 nu-gen consoles are anything but precise. The mouse is alot more easier to use accurately than a mini-joystick ever will be.
It took me about a week of playing Res Evil 4 on the Wii to get used to the Nunchuk Analogue stick, and im still a little rusty.
Goldeneye64 (a game I was a master at, and entered official Nintendo magazine competitions) took me about 2 months to fully master the movement, and then an extra 2months for the free aiming. Some folks just won't have the patience to master controls such as freecam, or movement.

Is it really that hard for people to get used to console controllers from using mouse and keyboard? I grew up playing both PC and console, so I never had a problem with it, but it took you four months to not be terrible at the game? It took me about two days to get used to the first 3d game I played with a joystick (Super Mario 64).

It would be awesome to see The Outfit Warhammer 40k-ified. A lot of people said the game was crap but I thought it was great fun. It would be awesome to see Dreads, Lemans, and other cool vehicles and stuff in MP. And make the MP epic with 40+ players and have 3 or 4 sided battle maps. I might actually take up MP again if they did that!

Mastering a controller type is not the same as "not being terrible at the game". It probably would take anyone who's not used to a controller at least a month to pretty-much master it.

My mistake GZ, I missed the word 'master'. Still, I didn't know it took people that long to manage it correctly.
Is 40+ multiplayer possible on consoles?
I suppose it's possible, but I doubt it'd be very stable, and it'd lag to hell and back. Wasn't Halo 3 planned to be 32 player at one point before they decided to cut back to the typical 16 player matches? I think that 100-man per team MMO Huxley is coming out on consoles eventually too, but I've heard nothing about it at all, so I don't know if it's still going to be released on them or not.

It should be. I don't understand why it wouldn't. It really pisses me off that all the MP games on consoles go up to 12 player maps. WTF? They use the excuse it makes it more tactical. Yeah, but I want massive, chaotic battles. I want the option!
That is pretty much the main reason I hate console MP, at least PC games let you screw with the code and such allowing 72 players(!) or more in some games. Lovely, sublime chaos!
