Hello,
I have just signed up to these forums in a final attempt to get a soluton to my problem.
I have a Netgear WGT624v2 router running firmware revision 4.2.11. (I have seen the thread by Lokomotive about his WGT624v2, thread 131388 for reference, and the suggested fixes do not seem to work for me)
It's really a great router that supports a ton of features compared to many other home routers and i prefer not to switch to a different make/model as this router performs its duties perfectly other than for the "Dawn of War" series.
I have fairly extensive experience in setting up home routers and computers for operation on home networks, so feel free to use technical terms and acronyms. If worse comes to worst I know how to Google.
And now the problem.
I can connect to the lobby and change rooms and remain there as long as I want. I can chat and view games, I can add and whisper friends and receive whispers. I can see the games available in the lobby as well as get pings to many. I can host games and I can join a VERY small percentage of games (in fact I have only been able to join games created by a friend of mine and ONLY if there is no one else in the game, upon my joining no one else can join, i have researched this to be narrowed down to a NAT issue but Lokomotive seemed to some how be able to fix his, whereas I cannot). This friend is also the only person verified to be able to join my hosted games. I have used the nettest tool and had all tests pass but still not been able to connect to games.
The router supports:
NAT (always on)
SPI (on or off)
Port Forwarding
Port Triggering
A single private IP designated DMZ server.
DHCP (on or off + optional Private IP Reservation while DHCP is on)
Internet Ping Response (on or off)
MTU Size selection (currently set to 1472, optimized for my broadband modem)
UPnP (on or off)
Many irrelevant wireless and inter-router access features I can list if necessary.
I subscribe to a static IP address from my ISP.
The issue disappears when I remove the router and the game even works properly through ZoneAlarm. I have configured ZoneAlarm to allow DoW. The nettest fails when ZoneAlarm is on because it's not the specified process trying to access the ports so I have gone so far as to add my computer to the DMZ AND disable ZoneAlarm (temporarily) for troubleshooting sake. Even with this done with the router connected I still can't join games.
I have tried all manner of port forwarding and port triggering, switching the SPI and ping response as well as a UPnP fix listed by GroundZero in a (well done I must say) point/click self help thread.
As much time as it has taken me to get to this point I am willing to restart my troubleshooting if someone has a confirmed fix for this problem.
I would be interested to know what firmware version Lokomotive was using in his testing/resolution.
If you have any questions about my setup or need more information I am eager to provide it.
Thank you in advance,
Fodder83
EDIT:
On a hunch, I managed to fix my problem using firmware v4.2.6 available HERE (http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d102583.asp) (Xbox Live Certified with Netgear WGT624v2)
For those having similar problems with this router I have configured it as follows:
1) Forwarded all ports as described in the Dawn of War nettest utility. LINK (http://66.134.89.225/~sic/nettest.html)
2) DISBALED SPI firewall
3) NO specified DMZ server (this function DISABLED)
4) NO respond to ping on internet port
5) Use router as DHCP (using address reservations for most systems on the network anyway)
6) DISABLED UPnP
Please note that the TCP tests using the Dawn of war nettest return no response at all, not even a timeout, but this doesn't seem to affect my ability to join or host.
I'm guessing that this older version of the firmware has loosened NAT to pass Xbox Live certification but I can't be certain.
I am fully able to host and connect to almost all games. I'm not even sure the disabling of UPnP is completely necessary so I will be doing some more testing and post as necessary. In my case I would prefer to have UPnP ENABLED as this makes the router a little friendlier for Xbox Live, but for others this may not matter.
If I get really ambitious I may even post a link to a generic ".cfg" file for easy loading using the router's backup and restore settings feature under "Maintenace -> Backup Settings" at the left of the interface. We shall see.
More to come,
