*Note: This might only be a fix for those who have previously installed any of the DoW games. And I am not responsible for anyone who might inadvertantly brick their OS because they deleted the wrong thing. Use with caution*
I recently purchased The DoW 40K Platinum edition, and upon trying to install got an error that MANY people have experienced: The Fatal Error Install. After about three hours of fury, two polite, but frustrated calls to tech support (who are really awesome and patient people), an ungodly amount of Googling, and one kick ass computer geek friend later, the problem has been resolved.
Regedit.
Simply go to the run command on your start menu, type in regedit, do a search for the word dawn, and then delete any files related to the Warhammer 40K game that you find. After you've done this, you should be able to install and play. It's the only thing that has worked for me, and I am actually VERY surprised that not a SINGLE person on any forums had suggested it. I suppose because it's so obvious you just don't think about it, or because folks don't like the idea of telling people to get all power-user on their pc, and possibly brick it.
Anyway, do this, and I think you'll be VERY pleased. I know I was.
