The World of Kung Fu is a 3D MMORPG for the PC. Based on traditional Chinese culture, the game takes place in a mythical land founded on the ancient Kung Fu moral values of justice and heroism. Breaking away from the limits imposed by 'professions', each player starts the game as a martial artist of old, studying Kung Fu in a remote village. Having perfected certain chosen skills by completing extensive training and undergoing numerous tests, players set out to take part in the creation of the Wulin, a classic Kung Fu society. As they travel throughout the various territories of ancient China (Zhong Guo; literally "Middle Kingdom") players will be able to demonstrate their valor and bravery as they strive to become martial arts legends. Rooted in traditional Chinese society and mythology, the game is designed to provide an authentic cultural experience in which the player will be exposed to the depths of China's ancient philosophy and rich customs while enjoying amazing adventures in a fantasy game world setting. The 3D graphics are inspired by the beautiful landscapes of uncontaminated countryside portrayed in traditional Chinese paintings. As in the real world, the World of Kung Fu is a complex network of various interconnecting systems. Unlike other games in which the point of the experience is to defeat monsters and enemies, this game invites the martial artists to become deeply involved in the development and establishment of a society with interdependent economic and social systems. The game also enables players to experience the emotions of a private life filled with romance and drama. Furthermore, as they increase their skills, players can master their own style of Kung Fu and establish their own schools, from which they will be able to pass their knowledge on to others. Another unique aspect of the game is how World of Kung Fu is made to be as interactive as possible. The GMs are actually in the game for you to interact with, and our event staff is continually creating new interactive NPCs and adventures that help give the game a live feel. It is our goal to bring the Middle Kingdom of the World of Kung Fu to life! Many more adventures and additions to the game are planned for the future. All new content upgrades will remain free to download and free to play.

I just started playing the beta, its pretty fun. Instead of choosing a class you choose a kung fu weapon to master (sword, broadsword, hook, bow, staff, spear, fan, axe/hammer, fist). I don't have have much time playing with the game, I'm a level 11 staff user. I'm really digging the ancient Chinese theme.

heres a quick run down of the kung fu skills

axe= highest atk but lowest def
Broadsword= 2nd highest atk & can stun
sword= DD & can silence
Bow= Range DD
fist= DoT DD
spear= aoe DD
staff=tank & high def
fans= healer/buffers
hooks= jack of all trades

for more info about the game and kung fu check out the home page and wiki pages

PS:If you party or anything my name is: Carpediem (hook)

He who quote Sun Tzu win at life.

I'm sort of excited about this, the only free MMO I know of that looks polished, isn't full of engrish, and promises to stay free.

My copy just finished downloading, I'll be Fennesz in game if the name is free.

Intrepid first adopters, please give us an idea of how grindy this game is on the NavyField scale.

Indeed, and a short run-down on combat mechanics, if anyone could take the trouble.

Okay.

It's quite grindy, but at the same time you level at a slightly higher rate than WoW as an example. Not sure about higher levels though. Combat is fairly cool. No different in mechanics to most MMO's, you click a target then hit a hotkey to attack or use a skill, like WoW. It throws a bit of spice into the mix in the form of flashy messages popping out of your head saying "PERFECT!" when you do things like kill an enemy in one hit, and as far as I can tell it gives you a bonus to XP in such situations. The problem with combat is that there is no kung fu. You attack by swishing your weapon at something but that's about it, no cool moves, most skills take the form of a sparkly effect rather than an actual move.

I was a bit disappointed and uninstalled it. It feels really sparse and cold, like WoW with every drop of charm sucked out. The game plays fine though, looks pretty good graphically and has some good features. As is probably obvious, it just comes off as a poor mans WoW, and considering half of the internet hate WoW without even playing it, the fact that this lacks even half of what makes that a good game means you probably won't like this much.

Oh, and the engrish is everywhere once you get into the actual game. :(

Pretty much what i expected. MMO makers always try to make kungfu MMOs but there is no actual kungfu, just the standard swing attacks and "skills" that usually take forever to learn.

We need an MMO Dynasty Warriors I tells ya.

I second that. awesome choreography in DW. And of course the setting rocked the donkey's balls.

Damn, that's disappointing. Thanks, capa.

Thirded on the dynasty warriors mmo. That style of gameplay in a co-op arena alone is hilariously addictive, and in an MMO environment I'm sure the level of ridiculousness would increase substantially.

Paladin MMO Dynasty Warriors would be cool. I'm just surprised they haven't made one yet with how popular the series is over here.

I was pretty disappointed that there wasn't any actual 'kung fu' in the game, just the standard MMO combat animations as Question mentioned.

They should name it "World of Standard MMO Combat With A Fantasy Chinese Theme". Ok, maybe that's a little too long, but why put kung fu in the title when there isn't any? False advertising, I say!

Well actually there is a growing trend in Asian themed online games now especially involving chinese history XD

Which is just a palette swap, honestly. Same game.

Make it an action game like DW, and I'll be all over it.

"Colloquially, kung fu (or gung fu) alludes to any individual accomplishment or cultivated skill obtained by long and hard work" -wiki

I think the definition is appropriate for the game, don't you?

Yeah, sure, but it'd be appropriate to a Bruce Lee film as well, wouldn't make it any less of a hilarity to watch Mr. Lee casting "tears of the lotus" to revive a fallen party member.

Whether it's appropriate for the game or not is kind of beside the point. The question is: Does the world need another autoattack+hotkey skill grind MMORPG?

I think there are more than enough of them, myself.

Wow!
That did indeed suck hard.

Didn't even include an uninstall option (which I hate them for)

MMO makers always try to make kungfu MMOs but there is no actual kungfu -Question

I'm assuming you guys meant there were no martial arts moves in the game. On the other hand Kung fu does seems fitting for the game because MMO's are just that, "individual accomplishment or cultivated skill obtained by long and hard work."

I can see why you guys don't like them game though but to each there own. Is it just me or does free always make things seem better? For me its does at least.

Zir

Free makes things seem better but there are some depths to which I will not crawl. If a game is bad, it's just bad, I'll keep poking around for something else that is free and that has at least an iota of self respect. As far as I'm concerned the fact that WoKF is free means nothing, how does that change the fact that I am going to have zero fun playing it? French kissing a hippo is free, that doesn't mean I'm inclined to go and do it. I don't like the assumption that something being free makes it worthwhile.

I think the thing here is that the game is advertising itself based on the pop-culture presence of Kung Fu. We all know that since three decades ago the phrase has always meant cheesy kick-assery dealt by the hands of Asian acrobats of death. Somehow I don't think "World of Qi" or "World of Feng Shui" would have attracted as many people.

Paladin

Actually things being free doesn't generally make them seem better to me. I typically figure they must suck from the outset, if they're not charging money for it.

the kung fu in this game -and all games alike: mastering the grind :| color me... meh.

it's not bad if you have time to waste but if you're wasting time, you're not doing kung fu :p

Question
5th May 08, 7:08 AM
When one thinks of a kungfu MMO, one has this scene of opponents squaring off and unleashing moves straight out of those chinese fantasy martial arts films, not the same generic attacks present in every single MMO via holding down the left mouse button. I dont consider grinding to be kungfu.

Costumes like this:

and phrases like this:

"Rooted in traditional Chinese society and mythology, the game is designed to provide an authentic cultural experience in which the player will be exposed to the depths of China's ancient philosophy and rich customs while enjoying amazing adventures in a fantasy game world setting. "

...don't seem to go together.
