Pretty much as the title says.

Please discuss as to why you liked the game you chose.

Battlefield 2 is the only one i have played. And that is only to a minimal, as i bought it only to play the 'Project Reality' mod with my gaming buddies.

I really liked BF:V, I thought they got the atmosphere of the game just right in that one. Skimming over the jungle in a huey and listening to classic rock has never been so much fun.

The Vietnamese side also played really interestingly. There were all kinds of ways to ambush people, from using lumber to block roads to setting up a nest of claymores out in the jungle and drawing people in. Pretty cool stuff.

Stealth could have been done a little bit better though. As cool as the stealthy tactics were in the game, they usually weren't as effective as jumping in a tank and shooting everything that moved.

2142 is the only game I've played... and by aesthetics only? 2142 will be the only one I will.

I like the futuristic look of the game, yet some of the graphics and logos present in the city scenes remind me of some futuristic 80s vectory graphics... which is a good thing. I tried to nail down a source for 'that kind' of graphic and BF2142 is a good source and inspiration for that kind of artwork.

Otherwise I'm not really an online kinda gamer. I play BF2142 because of the artistic style and the fact that you can play with realistic-ish guns, while the pace of combat is still high up there (as opposed to Counter strike, which can be long in between playing and Unreal Tournament's cartoony guns aren't what I'd want to play with at times).

I played 2 a bit, but the one I've really gone in for is 2142, and as frustrating as it can be sometimes when you're having a bad day and it seems like you die as soon as you spawn, it's so rewarding when you and your squad work like a machine and infiltrate the Titan, blowing up reactor consoles and the core, before parachuting to safety, winning the game for your team. It's the best 'community' game I've played (that may say more about my choice of games than 2142, but ah well).

2142 for me, only played that one and 2, and while they're both great fun, I find 2142 to be better, especially the maps (Gibraltar is better than Karkand for inf battles, IMO, and Wake is much more balanced in 2142 than it ever was in 2).

My god, I can't believe the number of people who never played 1942 here! It had controllable destroyers and aircraft carriers! Mobile artillery! Half-tracks! Spitfires! Vehicles and aircraft that don't give the driver a ridiculous score! Inflatable dingies and Nazi jetpacks!

Koozer, if you count playing the MP demo during lunchbreaks on school comps for half a year, then I played that as well. But from what I played 2 and 2142 is better.

2142 or Desert Combat.

2142 IMO has the best balance between vehicles and infantry, and I like the unlock system.

Desert Combat was simply amazing. Weapons that actually killed things, vehicles that were worth riding in, and took talent to master... I remember everyone crashing helicopters for like weeks.

Until they nerfed the RPG. Having a little bird take an RPG to the cockpit and keep on trucking killed the game for me. Not to mention the RPG being completely worthless against people.

1942 was fun, but the maps pretty much blew for the most part. Naval Combat was gimmicky and planes moved too slow for my taste.

Bad Company is a decent game. But the damage model and the way they made all the weapons so generic killed it for me.

2 was my fav so far but i havnt played it in a long time. I have actually owned every single battle field game and loved them all. I just like the modern day setting the best i think. I guess thats why i also loved bad company so much. Get that frostbite engine in BF3 and that should be something great.

Each version manages to keep the same feel while being very different at the same time. I remember playing each on for months and never got the next one thinking it was just the same with a different skin.

But anyway as stated my vote went to 2 for being my fav era to play in and thats it. the only really plus you got over 2 in 2142 was no planes as they are completely OTT and not realistic at all. Planes should be used for airstrikes as they are in real life and thats it. Not doing loop the loops bombing one spot over and over.

!942's biggest problem was that the AI would instantly kill planes with tank MGs. I'm gonna have to go with 2142.Nothing like diving into an alleyway with a walker about to crush you!

I really disliked 1942, but lots of those issues were fixed in 2142. And as far as I know 2142 is an improvement to Battlefield 2. So I picked 2142, although I'm really interested in Heroes.

Although I have played 1942 and BF2, the one I ended up getting was 2142. Im a sucker for sci-fi, and the near realistic weapons and the ability to pilot big stompy walkers was the biggest draw for me. The sound effects are cool as fuck too. Reduced to playing it on lowest gfx settings thanks to my substandard laptop card, but still great fun to play. Squad system improved on what BF2 had started, ie rewarding players more for playing in squads etc. I like how even the unlocks have their disadvantages (smaller clip size, slower rate of fire etc). Favourite map has to be Camp Gibraltar, very good for racking up those kills. :ebil:

The music was also the best of the series. And ships we'rent gimmicky. That is obviously the words of someone who's never had a five person match (yes, five) in battle of midway.

1942.

I absolutely loved that game to death. The ships, the player-manned artillery, the planes that required MUCH skill to use without instant DEATH being inflicted upon the flier...

I played BF2. I probably played BF2 more than 1942, because I am a sucker for achievements/badges/unlocks. I still play BF2 to this day, I don't 1942. But, for the time I did, I enjoyed 1942 more.

I played a demo of BF2142. I never ever got into it - the running was too thumpy, the shit all felt...bad after BF2. I gave it another go about a year ago, but I just-could-not-like-it. :/

I played BF:BC. I loathed BF:BC. Nuff said.

2142 for me- I never really played BF games until it came out, and as I too am a sucker for futuristic things I decided to give the demo a go. 6 months of crazy times later, I went and grabbed the full game. I'm still playing it now, as a matter of fact.

I find it pretty addictive. Whilst there are some pretty damn lame and frustrating things in there (RDX macro hoppers, I'm looking at you), the good bits are good enough to make me want to keep on at it (outflying someone so that they lose control and crash is a personal favourite, shame the game doesn't credit you for that though ;)).

BF:V for me.

Played '42, DC and 'Nam. '42 was ace and midway with 40 people rocked (enough so that you could get all the ships up and fully manned plus decent land and air skirmishes), as did picking your way through the rubble of stalingrad and ambushing russian tanks with mines, and I seem to remember having a massive hardon for the filopeens map back in the day.

DC was great for tank battles out in the open desert maps, and I loved me some oil rig map, especialy when I was the engineer class with the shotgun. I never did get the hang of those damn helicopters...

'Nam was just the dog's bollocks. I realy could rant about the fun I had with 'nam for hours, my fondest moment was being acused of cheating on the thick jungle map when I racked up a massive score for no losses with only a semi auto riffle, various blowy upy engineer toys and a lot of hiding in bushes.

1942 takes the cake for me in terms of how much fun I had overall as well as the mods that I played... Desert Combat was good enough to get two or three seasons in clan matches and made for some great tank battles so long as you could get away from a keyed in Scud player. There was also a great Vietnam mod made that I can't remember that was awesome.

BF:V was too buggy for me to really get into it... I had fun with it and it had great atmosphere, but the game itself, seemed a bit lacking to me... it was also a helluva switch to go from a P-51 to a friggin F-4 Phantom II (not bad, just WOW). Point of Existence made this game a bit more fun to me and seeing the JSF here first was cooler than in BF2.

BF2 was great overall, but there were some big fixes that were needed first. I think that it was one of the better titles in terms of parity for clan play and you could actually fight without using the unlocks if you cared. The unlocks were great and enhanced gameplay, but you didn't need them.

And THAT is where I draw the biggest line with 2142... I felt that the unlocks were required to have fun because everyone else was blasting away with cool weapons and you got stuck with shit... unlocks shouldn't make the game, just enhance it. Aside from that, 2142 was the first of the series to NOT have a new graphics engine. We saw 1942 get improved with BFV and that, in turn take a backseat to BF2 and then... then... well 2142 was a re-skinned BF2 mod and that upset me.

If I had to pick one it would be 1942 with the expansions. I never could get really engrossed with any of them though.

From what I remember 1942 had the best balance between vehicles balance and infantry. Some of the best maps, and controllable aircraft carriers was just awesome (if annoying for fly boys). I only played the beta for 2142 but you almost seemed better off on foot then in a vehicle, they seemed to be pretty much deathtraps.

The thing I've always disliked about the battlefield series is that the vehicles don't lock. You shouldn't have to worry about leaving your vehicle and having to worry an enemy is gonna ninja it from you.

I've never really understood the popularity of battlefield, nearly all the large map team fps I've played over the years have been better. Tribes 1 and 2, Quake Wars, Planetside, I've just never understood why these games didn't really take off (well plenty still play Quake Wars) while battlefield remains dominant.

Battlefield 2. Battlefield 1942 was just a bit "too much" of the, "hey look at me! I'm moving this gigantic ship all by myself!" and not to forget that it was pretty buggy.

Battlefield 2142 just never gave me the same atmosphere as bf1942 or BF2 so, BF2 wins.

Though, I must admit that I don't realy care much for the series though. They seem pretty repetetive.

The Eve of destruction mod for BF1942 was so much fun, a Vietnam mod with Thee twitchiest helicopters to fly in the world of videogaming. Learning to fly one of them was a real achievment. People used to applaud if you could land the thing without killing everyone on board.

Bottenbrecker, that is an invalid complaint. Since you are also operating a host of other vehicles all by yourself that really should require more people.
Besides, you can't complain that Battlefield is silly.

Also music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNNAixJErEU clearly owns any of the others. 2142's intro is also the only place in the game the theme may be found. Which really sucks ass. I also guess it is really representative of how I feel about the game... It stopped being Battlefield for me the moment the music stopped.
BF2 also had really promising music in the teaser trailer, but then it somehow sucked in game. :(

The vehicles suck and walkers are ridiculous, but the infantry battles I find are much more intense. Some of the "tighter" maps (such as Camp G) often generate some awesome showdowns. Win or lose, I love it.

1942, the reason is simple, it was one of the first FPS games that i played, it was the first game where i could drive stuff and shoot with them too, the game was amazing, and while BF2 is a very good game, it doesn't get near to the original, the rest i really don't consider as BF, it was made for cash only(except Heroes but i still have to try that one) and it kinda sucks, 2142 is pretty pointless, it felt more like a mod than a sequel, but meh...

BF42

There's nothing more fun as zooming across the maps in a spitfire or whichever air plane is available and dakkadakkadakka all infantry. Going up way high, wait for "Tank spotted" and nose dive with a 70°-90° angle ontop of them for perfect precision bombing. I rarely missed, Rarely. (1 out of 50 bombs didn't blow up a tank, rest 1 hit 1 kill)

God I miss that game.

I would pay 100$ for a bf1942 clone with prettier graphics and 100player maps!

1942: This game really set the bench for me in terms of large multiplayer fps action. Vehicles and the classes were (at the time) new concepts for me, and as the first game to introduce this to me, personally I feel this has been the standard for all fps games that use a class system.
Graphically pleasing at the time of release, good quality sound and immersion made for a good experience.

Vietnam: While I feel that this was the best use of helicopters, awesome music and napalm to have hit our monitors for some time now, the gameplay revolved around the vehicles too much for my liking, with respect to 1942. Vehicle maps used vehicles and if you were unlucky enough to be stuck in a transport or without armour, you moved nowhere on the scoreboard and in-game fast.
I found infantry maps had a bad habit of making everyone a medic or heavy, such that they would romp through, killing everything. Snipers and engineers became a side note to all apart from anyone who could use the engineer rifle well (yes, I was the one who used it for both sniping and assaulting).

I had a few glimpes of Battlefield2 and ran far away. Far far away.

I recently left a 2142 clan which was ranked 3rd in Australia and New Zeland ladders.
I love it to bits and it got my vote. Well balanced and extremely fun.
Only thing I can say is stop using the damn Vos you n00bs!

Bad company: From what I can tell with my limited gameplay, it is visually the most impressive I've seen so far. The physics and balance are good, as is both the single and multi player aspects of the game. I will never open a door again without a shotgun or enter a house without the afformentioned shotgun-entry or via a large hole in the wall.
Only problem I've found is the lack of cover, but thankfully the game rounds are short and the terrain respawns

I haven't seen hero's yet

Farseer, The Voss L-AR is awesome, and is the standard assault weapon for me whenever I play EU (prefer the krylov with PAC).

ThirdDanScoota
16th Sep 08, 8:18 AM
Darkelf, you just agreed with Farseer. I believe he means that it's overly effective, in which I agree with.
My standard weapon is the Baur H-AR. Low clip capacity but gives me the range and power I need to stop nearly anything. Not to mention the Herzog to neutralize you Voss abusers.

I'm going to have to place my vote on BF2, mostly because I played it more than any of the others. (Not including BF2142 because I haven't played that one.) There are few things greater than a packed Huey, two chainguns and a bunch of blood hungry gamers eagerly awaiting combat. I loved the feel of the game, even despite the 'buggyness' of EA's netcode.

ThirdDanScoota
16th Sep 08, 12:14 PM
If by "better" you mean "balanced between the two", then yes. Most unlocks are designed to fill a niche, not replace a weapon outright.

I enjoyed Recon for a time, but realized that Assault was infinitely more useful not only to my team, but also for increasing my rank more rapidly.

EDIT: Do you see ANY reason to use the Zeller?

darkelf
16th Sep 08, 12:38 PM
Actually, I've been using it more and more lately, I get the impression that the zoom is slightly better, than and a body shot is far more likely to kill, and I find it far better than the Moretti anyway, hate the scope on that one (I seem favour PAC weapons in just about every class). But when I simply camp somewhere and I'm more concerned about conserving bullets I'll keep to the standard rifles with their 30 potential headshots instead of 27.

DeathsHands
16th Sep 08, 6:27 PM
I'm voting 2142. Sci-Fi just eats me up, and got so epic on the 64 player maps. Personally, I only use support, so I go with the Ganz HMG. It's really powerful and accurate, which is kind of it's downfall. I had a little bit of trouble using it for the first day I had it after getting used to taking advantage of the spread of the stock guns. But the shotgun sucks, so I don't mind it much. I really had problems regarding the use of recon though. Seriously, I hate the 5 second refire rate, and I don't think anyone sits around to wait. It's impossible to get headshots as well.

Ifitmovesnukeit
16th Sep 08, 6:52 PM
I just can't use the baur- its accuracy is so poor up close and therefore having to empty around half the clip to kill someone at close range doesn't do it for me, so I abuse the voss like everyone else when EU, and I also prefer the krylov as a PAC player. It doesn't help that the baur sounds more like a musical instrument than a tungsten-spitting heavy assault rifle.

I prefer the standard sniper rifles to the Zeller- both will kill if you land a headshot, and the default rifles have larger clips and don't make such a loud damn noise when you fire them as the zeller does, handily giving you away in the process.

Oh, and the shotgun rules for titan boarding actions- plenty of combat efficiency pins for me off the poor souls who decided to pod on top of a titan I was defending. :p

I don't know... say... their demo packs?

Blowing up consoles is a bitch for any less than a crack team of 3 people, none of which are recon.
The simple fact that you can sit around as recon and protect a space (and I'm talking any space, not just bottle necks) is pretty handy indeed. They may not have equipment to directly aid another person (apart from the net-bat fade upgrade), trip mines and demo packs help a lot. Also, its just another guy to pick up a medic kit if you die and res you.

ThirdDanScoota

It's a fantastic mid-range sniping weapon, though. Agreed on the snipers - Zeller isn't a very good "upgrade" compared with the defaults.
I'm a little confused as to why EA made the LMGs into rapid-fire sniper rifles though. My only guess is that too many people had trouble using the SAWs as Support in BF2, so they turned them into EZ Mode.
/me shrugs

This thread really makes me want my 1942 back :(

EDIT: I don't know... say... their demo packs?

Not everyone plays Titan. As it stands Recon have very few ways of gaining points in a match (and thus increasing Rank).
I won't deny that they're very useful to have, but ultimately they just don't get rewarded for being possibly the most difficult kit to use.
Don't get me wrong, I love Recon. However, even when I go fantastically well, I always feel that I definately would have contributed considerably more to my team had I been using another kit. That shouldn't happen.

(For those of you not in the know, you place 4-5 demo packs on the front of a "car", drive it at high speed towards the back of some tank, jump out, detonate and give them a big F-off to remember. Works best with a support buddy who gets points for resupplying you, EMPing the tank/walker and killing anything stupid enough to jump out.)

Recons are possibly the most fun and versatile to customise with the least amount of unlocks.

Farseer Rusty, it is of course well and good. But axis suicide jeeps were more awesome. They also require more skill to keep the explosives inside them.

BmB, we're currently discussing 2142, not 1942.

However, you are correct that axis is better for this job in 1942

Dan, I don't know about the not being rewarded part, every time I'm doing a decent round as recon I'm consistently in the top 5, most often only beaten by the commander of the winning team or some Titan AA gun whore. Find a good spot (one of my personal specialities) and sit there till you're out of ammo, good 20-ish kills with no one to bother you if the place is good (This works best on new maps when people aren't too familiar with all the good sniping spots yet).

Dan's right as far as normal Conquest maps go. The Recon kit really needs to be played on Titan mode to come into its own, when snipers run around Titans making it god-damn impossible to get in without treading on an APM or having a pile of dem packs fired off underneath you or getting a sniper round through the face.

It's quite entertaining to snipe people on the ground from odd spots on the outside of the Titans as well. It usually takes people a while to figure out where you're at ;)

Is it okay for me not to like any of the BF games I've played (2&2142) but enjoy the mods immensely?

In that case, Project Reality and Forgotten Hope 2. :)

How can Battlefield: 2 be more popular than far superior Battlefield 2142?! That's just bizarre..

Rusty, I meant old suicide jeeps > new suicide jeeps.

I think recon only gets useful AFTER you unlock the Lambert. That thing is pretty awesome. I think it's around impossible to actually kill people with the sniper rifle.

I used to get the infiltrator pin all the time, simply because I played recon every match until I did. Then I got the Lambert carbine and Recon was just another assault class with explosives, not med kits and defribs.

In conquest, a good sniper covers for the whole team and makes a huge difference when defending a flag. Although Titan mode does bring this kit to the fore, they are still able fill a role in any scenario (with the proper unlocks)

Kilhole, while you believe BF2142 to be superior to BF2, some people don't agree. While I like 2142, I consider 2 to be the better game for number of reasons. (better mods, cooler weapons, better/more maps, etc.)

Should mods be taken into account for the success of the game? I don't personally like BF2, but I have seen some really good mods for it (perhaps if the game wasn't so bad it wouldn't need so many mods)
