Hi

I’m pretty new to warhammer, I only bought the rule book yesterday. A few of my friends play already (they do space marines and Tua I think).

I was reading the map page on 139 and it says about a race called the Barghesi and the Khrave. What army book would I need to buy to play that race cos they sound really cool.

Many Thanks for any help.

As far as I know, neither of those races exist in anything other than fluff (the Barghesi we're just introduced with the new rulebook, and I believe the same with the Khrave). So unless you feel up to making your own codex, your stuck without them.

Yeah, what GawD said. These races exist only in (very recent) fluff; there's no army book for either of them and in all honesty, probably never will be. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I doubt you'll see models and rules for them within the next 10-15 years.

EDIT: Fluff is the backstory; things that are mentioned in the various tales, legends and information sheets that occur in all WH40K publications.
As to making a codex... Well, basically you make up your own models and your own rules for said models, and then maybe if you have nice friends they'll even let you play games with them. To be honest, I wouldn't bother -Just pick a race from one of the many already in production. If after a few months you still want to play these new races, then I'd start thinking about making your own models and rules, but at your stage I'd jsut focus on getting into the game and learning the basics.

Oh, and welcome to the forums and to a great hobby!

O.k thanks for the help.
But I just googled Barghesi and i found someone who has a army of them already. How can he do that?

He's probably done some conversion work on existing models then either wrote his own rules for them or used proxy rules from another race. Basically there are a set of rules which govern how the game is played, then a separate set which deal with the specific abilities and organisation of any given race. For each race there is a book called a codex which sums these up along with the preset points values for given units that race can field.

However the 40k universe as a work of fiction is significantly bigger than is represented in the game so people sometimes make a project out of creating their own version of how some of the other races may play out on the table top. They will either write their own unofficial codex and rules (which generally won't be allowed in a tournament) or alter existing models to look like that race then use the official rules for one of the known races (which might be allowed, depending where you play and how forgiving your opponents are).

Maybe you could ask him if he made a custom codex. If you ask nicely he might even email it to you.

However, I'll echo the advice above. For a new player it's best to start with an existing race. Apart from anything else, you might find people refuse to play anything except the standard armies

That, and it's no easy thing even for experienced players. I tried it one time. My first draft was... Well everything made sense at the time, but I was lucky enough to have people point out to me quite how ludicrously unbalenced it was so I could fix it.

I'll add my voice to the chorus os "choose an existing army". As a veteran RPG/TT gamer of over a quarter century, I can say with complete certainty that creating your own rules, (be it an entire game system, a class/unit/army within a game and/or special rules for a game), is immensely rewarding and challenging. It is also not something to be embarked upon lightly. Gamers with vast amounts of experience recognize it is no small task.

You, as a new player of 40K with an undetermined amount of TT gaming experience elsewhere, are simply not equipped with the proper tools to craft an entirely new army from scratch in a game system and game universe you know so little about. I don't mean this to be rude, but it is cold, hard truth.

For now, pick something you like the look of, (if it be Space Marines or Orks, I highly recommend the Assault on Black Reach set), and as you gain experience you can try your hand at converting models to build a 'counts as' army, (an army with a unique look, but leveraging an existing army codex), and long after that you can start to craft a codex of your own. Hopefully, you will have friends and/or a gaming group willing to help you with it and accept playing against it.

I too would say go with an existing army to start with, beforing considering proxies or fiddling with lists. Get a grip on the basic rules, find an army that fits your chosen playing style and get comfortable with the system.

Once you are comfortable with all that, read up on some of the other races' Codeciis and see if any of them fit with how you view your new race (like the australian Bhargesi guy used the Ork Codex). It's entirely possible (and always easier than writing your own) to use an existing Codex and change the unit names - so long as you let your opponent know what is what.
