I have been playin Soulstorm fine
Until installing the new patch today.
which installed 100% fine apparently
Though when i try to load up the ganme it say there is an error as an emulator is detected.....when i have never had any emulators at all on this computer.
I'm now fumbling round the internet installing random things like daemon tools and yazu in the hope that this will work because i read some stuf fthat suggests it might but really this seems to be worrying.
I'm am dying to play the new game.
aarg!
someone help pleeease!

Daemon tools is an emulator (it emulates a disk drive) so if you didn't have an emulator before, you do now. Start by getting rid of it.

As for yazu, never heard of it - google tells me its a sushi restaurant...ah, you mean yasu? Looks like its part of Daemon Tools so remove that as well.

Get rid of any new stuff you have installed and then run hijackthis (google it) and post a log, I might be able to guess what is setting off that message. It also wouldn't hurt to contact official THQ support - they will have more specific information on what is designed to trigger the game's copy protection.

I have the same problem but i don't have emulator and thq is down

...and me makes three. I'd put together a hijackthis log, but I don't think it's anything on my end. I ran SS unpatched with no issues from day one; pretty sure it's the patch itself causing the problem. Oh well, guess I can always roll SS back to 1.0 and play the bugfix mod for a while...

ok well i haven't installed daemon tools yet.
The thing is that nothing has changed since i was playing soulstorm earlier in the day and i have been playing that daily for 2 weeks without installing anything new.
The problem appears to be in the patch.
I will install hiack tis and run it and post up on here - thanks for your help x

Magnus: obviously the patch has caused this, it must have updated the game's DRM as well as the game itself.

eldar_warrior: I've spotted two potential culprits in your log:

1) O3 - Toolbar: DAEMON Tools Toolbar - {32099AAC-C132-4136-9E9A-4E364A424E17} - C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools Toolbar\DTToolbar.dll

As I said, Daemon Tools is a disk emulator, just the toolbar might be enough to set off the SS DRM.

2) C:\Program Files\SyncroSoft\Pos\H2O\cledx.exe

That appears to be legitimate DRM software used with some programs which need to authenticate online or using a USB dongle. However, according to this (http://www.file.net/process/cledx.exe.html) the name has also been used by a warez group. It is possible that the SS DRM has a list of known warez applications to look out for - if this is the case and cledx.exe is on the list then someone didn't do their research and it will need fixing. To confirm this you will need to shut down cledx.exe and try SS again - whatever software uses cledx to authenticate won't work with it disabled but a reboot will sort everything out.

the daemon tool tollbar came after the original email i sent you - will uninstall again.

regards cledx i shall give it a go and report back.

i really appreciate your help

update 1

Hi there,

unfortunately still no cigar!

I took cledx down as i did yesterday and uninstalled daemon tools, which again was only installed after the issue occurred and there's still the same error message.

Can you see any other possibilities at all.

Or is there an address for an official tech support person i should speak to?

ta x

update 2

i even moved the syncrosoft folder onto another drive and disconnected the other drive, and changed the name in windows prefetch.
and run ccleaner and antivirus for what it's worth.
still no cigar - it must be something else!

You might want to try going to securom directly (http://www.securom.com/message.asp?m=analysis) (Securom provided the DRM for earlier DoW games, I assume they do SS as well).

Try generating one of those analysis logs the site talks about (if the instructions don't work then I guess SS uses some other DRM, default to contacting THQ - contact details in the game manual or the THQ website).

Brace yourselves, this is a long post:

First of all, thanks to everyone for posting, particularly TBS for trying to help. I submitted a report ticket to THQ tech support; here's the highlights of their response:

Could you please try the below to resolve your issue -

1) Click Start
2) Click Run
3) Type MSCONFIG
4) Click OK

This will load the System Configuration Utility. Now follow these steps:
On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the
following check boxes:
Load Startup Items

5) Now click Apply.
6) Now click Close. Then Reboot.

Then try running the game again.
To re-enable your startup items, you would run the system configuration utility
and choose the option for "normal startup".

If this does not help then you should try contacting Securom -
Beyond that they recommend submitting the report to Securom, which I will do, and I'll report back my findings. In the meantime, I'm submitting my hijackthis log if anyone wants to make their own guess. Thanks again.

I can't see anything in your log that any should trigger any DRM...even by mistake.

Going back to Eldar_Warrior - I notice you have a bittorrent client - they can be used for illicent downloads so I guess that could be setting it off, try disabling/uninstalling it and seeing if that helps. (Hopefully that isn't the problem - bittorrent has many legitimate uses...someone normally makes a torrent to distribute the new DoW patch whenever one is released, for example).

Be sure to post back if either of you (or anyone else reading this) figures out the cause or hears something back from Securom. In the past Securom support has been pretty efficient, they are normally able to provide a patch to get you up and running.

Thanks so much for trying to help.
I feel a bit stuck x

Unfortunately even that hasn't worked.
Goodness!

AND what's more the 'launch analysis' menu option of securom doesn't appear when installed with the patch.

I even did a total uninstall and reinstalled soulstorm to see that again it worked fine, but then once i reinstalled the patch again it stopped working.

I have uninstalled bittorrent.

I am without webway gates.

By bonesingers are depressed.

Their music shall no longer shape the wraithbone.

The wanderers have not returned.

All those who oppose the eldar shall roam free

anyway...here is the message i wrote securom...

oh and ps i did have a virus recently when i tried to install codecs to let me watch Harold & Kumar avi's and got some weird trojan linked with some adult sites. as far as i'm aware i got rid of everything with superantispyware but i have just seen a dodgy browser plugin that looks like a hangover of that in there that looks worth deleting whatever happens, and even the panda active scan that i used at the time - i'll just try those and keep cleaning everything one stage further and see what happens.
Fingers crossed x

Dear Securom,

I am running a perfectly legitimate version of DOW Soulstorm.
I have been enjoying playing this and addicted to it with no problems over the last few weeks.
However upon downloading and installing the new patch i now encounter an error which stops the game from loading.

This error is the 'emulator detected' error.

I have no emulator and have uninstalled pretty much anything that is vaguely considered a possible culprit, including bittorrent etc, and the error message still exists.

I have tried starting the game after a clean startup without loading startup items - this has not worked either.

I have even uninstalled the game - seen that it works again without the patch, reinstalled the patch and seen that again it stops working.

I would use the 'launch analysis' tool but the option does not exist once the patch is installed - the option only exists when reinstalled without the patch - and as there is no problem at that stage, it seems to defeat the purpose.

Please help as soon as you possibly can - i'm as desperate as computer game based desperation can be.

I have included a hijackthis log in the meantime and i hope this helps - it has been looked over by knowledgeable people in the relic forums community and they cannot see any major liabilities.

if you need remote access just tell me

Yours truly wringing fingers,

Interesting post to SecuROM, eldar_warrior. My ticket to their support was similar, since I also did not have access to the "Launch Analysis" option post-patch, so that's consistent, for what it's worth. We'll see if they have any productive advice for either of us.

Can anyone confirm that having a torrent client and/or a disk emulation application on your computer will prevent a 100% legitimate copy of the game from running after the patch has been installed?

If this is the case, I will never touch another piece of THQ software in my life. I really hope it isn't.

I actually have installed SP3. Nice guess, though. No word back from SecuROM, we'll see if they have anything worthwhile to contribute.

Can anyone confirm that having a torrent client and/or a disk emulation application on your computer will prevent a 100% legitimate copy of the game from running after the patch has been installed?
I don't have either of those kinds of programs on my system, but the patch somehow made Soulstorm act as if I did. I haven't heard from anyone who does have torrent or emulators as to whether or not this impacted the patch, but you might want to hold off just in case...

This is was they sent me. But no file was made.

Thank you for your email. We are sorry that you are having issues with the use
of the software. The most efficient way for us to assist is to have you
produce an analysis file for evaluation. In order to generate this analysis
file, please do the following:

1) Make sure the original 'play' disc is in a physical, local CD or DVD drive.
If you have purchased a digitally downloaded version (no disc), please proceed
to step 2.
2) Re-start your computer (the reboot is to assure that there are no
additional instances of the software running when generating the file).
3) With your mouse, right-click on the application's desktop shortcut, or the
actual application's executable file in the installation folder, and a menu
will appear.
4) Choose 'Launch Analysis' from the menu.
5) A disclaimer window may appear on your screen. To proceed click 'Yes'.
Another window may appear stating that an analysis log will be generated, if
so click 'OK'. If any error messages appear, click 'Cancel' to continue.
6) After a period of time, the program will generate a file named
'AnalysisLog.sr0' and place it at the root of your hard drive (usually C:).
When the file has been generated, a dialog may appear stating it has finished.
Click 'OK' to complete the process. To locate it go to 'My Computer' and open
your hard drive (usually C:).
Note: Vista users see further instructions below.
7) Please compress the file using a program such as WinZip, WinRAR, or WinAce
(to avoid email corruption), and attach it to your email to
support@securom.com.

Vista Users:
Follow the steps outlined above through step 6. Using Vista the filed will be
stored in the following path: 'C:\Users\’YOUR
USER’\AppData\Local\Temp\AnalysisLog.sr0'. If by chance this folder is hidden,
you may have to display hidden folders. To do so, please follow these steps:
1. Go to 'Start' and left-click on 'Control Panel'.
2. Left-click on 'Appearance and Personalization'. Then select 'Folder
Options'.
3. Now select the 'View' tab, then select 'Show hidden files and folders'. You
should now have access to the folder.

If you do not see the 'Launch Analysis' option available in the menu after you
re-start your computer, you can generate it using the command line. Please
follow these steps:

1) Make sure the original 'play' disc is in a physical, local CD or DVD drive.

2) Re-start your computer (the reboot is to assure that there are no
additional instances of the software running when generating the file).
3) With your mouse, right-click on the application's desktop shortcut and a
menu will appear.
4) Choose 'Properties', then highlight and copy everything in the 'Target'
window.
5) Click 'Start' from your toolbar, then click 'Run'. Next type 'cmd' in the
text box and press 'Enter'. A 'DOS' window will appear.
6) Type 'cd\' (without quotes) and press 'Enter' to get to the root of your
hard drive (you may have to type 'cd ..' several times to get to C:\).
7) With your mouse, right-click in the 'DOS' window and choose 'Paste'.
8) Press the Spacebar on your keyboard once and add the text '/secuexp'. Then
press 'Enter'.
9) A disclaimer window may appear on your screen. To proceed click 'Yes'.
Another window may appear stating that an analysis log will be generated, if
so click 'OK'. If any error messages appear, click 'Cancel' to continue.
10) After a period of time, the program will generate a file named
'AnalysisLog.sr0' and place it at the root of your hard drive (usually C:).
When the file has been generated, a dialog may appear stating it has finished.
Click 'OK' to complete the process. To locate it go to 'My Computer' and open
your hard drive (usually C:).
Note: Vista users see notes above.
11) Please compress the file using a program such as WinZip, WinRAR, or WinAce
(to avoid email corruption), and attach it to your email to
support@securom.com.

When we receive the analysis file, we will evaluate your issue and respond
with a resolution.

Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions.

Were you unable to generate the file even using the command line method they discussed?

-=Magnus=-
23rd Oct 08, 11:50 AM
I also received those instructions from SecuROM, however despite following each step as advised, I never had access to a "Launch Analysis" option when right clicking on the Soulstorm executable. Eldar_warrior had the same issue. SecureROM provided the following workaround:

The Launch Analysis option should be available after you re-start thec omputer. If Launch Analysis is still not available you can launch the analysis using the command line mode by following the instructions below:

1.) Make sure the original disc is in your local CD or DVD drive.

2.) Please re-start your computer.

3.) Click with the right button of your mouse on the shortcut on your desktop.

4.) Choose Properties, then highlight and copy everything in the 'Target' window.

5.) Click on the 'Start' button in your toolbar, click 'Run', type 'cmd' and press enter. Now a DOS window will appear.

6.) Type 'cd\' and hit enter to get to the root of your C drive.

7.) Click with the right button of your mouse into the DOS window. If a menuappears choose 'Paste'.

8.) Press the space bar once and add the text '/secuexp' and press Enter.

9.) A disclaimer window may appear on your screen. To proceed, please click onto the 'Yes' button. A window stating that an Analysis log will be generated may appear, if so click OK. If an error message appears, please click Cancel.

10.) The program will now generate a file named 'AnalysisLog.sr0' on the root of your hard drive (usually C:). When it finishes another window should appear stating it has finished, click OK.

11.) Please zip the 'AnalysisLog.sr0' file using a program such as WinZip,WinAce, or WinRAR (to prevent email corruption) and send it tosupport@securom.com.

Hope this helps. I'll attempt to generate an analysis log and see if SecuROm has any feedback. Good luck.

EDIT:Bah, didn't scroll all the way through Blitznwl's response; mine is effectively a double-post. Ugh.

No file. it just tires to open the game and that was it.

Just to make sure, i did full search of my system for the file.

Yes, i followed the set of insturctions for when a 'launch analysis' buttion doesn't appear - ie the command line method - and upon completion of step 8 the same emulator detected warning comes up and stops everything again.

Have emailed securom back with the message below...

Dear Securom,

As the Launch Analysis option did not appear i followed the appropriate set of instructions below.

However upon completion of step 8, instead of any disclaimer etc, the same 'emulator detected' warning message came up.
Please assist

blitznwl: follow eldar warrior's lead - mail Securom again and tell them that you are unable to generate the log and explain what happens when you do. It might help if you take a screenshot showing the command line you typed to prove to them you did it right.

IF SO FING PISSED!!!!!! How do i start a class act lawsuit??

I sent them a email saying not file was made.

This is there reply.

The Launch Analysis option should be available after you re-start the
computer. If Launch Analysis is still not available you can launch the
analysis using the command line mode by following the instructions below:

1.) Make sure the original disc is in your local CD or DVD drive.
2.) Please re-start your computer.
3.) Click with the right button of your mouse on the shortcut on your desktop.

4.) Choose Properties, then highlight and copy everything in the 'Target'
window.
5.) Click on the 'Start' button in your toolbar, click 'Run', type 'cmd' and
press enter. Now a DOS window will appear.
6.) Type 'cd\' and hit enter to get to the root of your C drive.
7.) Click with the right button of your mouse into the DOS window. If a menu
appears choose 'Paste'.
8.) Press the space bar once and add the text '/secuexp' and press Enter.
9.) A disclaimer window may appear on your screen. To proceed, please click
onto the 'Yes' button. A window stating that an Analysis log will be generated
may appear, if so click OK. If an error message appears, please click Cancel.
10.) The program will now generate a file named 'AnalysisLog.sr0' on the root
of your hard drive (usually C:). When it finishes another window should appear
stating it has finished, click OK.
11.) Please zip the 'AnalysisLog.sr0' file using a program such as WinZip,
WinAce, or WinRAR (to prevent email corruption) and send it to

Did you take a screenshot of what you were doing? In this kind of situation the first thing a low level tech support person will think is that the user doesn't know what theyre doing. A screenshot showing that you have typed exactly the right thing into the command window and that no file has appeared on your C drive should be sufficient to get your problem passed up the tech support hierarchy.

I replied back saying i need help and that I've got MSCE, CCNA and work on my MCPD.

That normally does better then a pic from what i've learn.

I've always been a firm believer in "a picture is worth a thousand words" - its how you show them that you've followed their instructions to the letter, though your way will probably get through to them as well.

I got the exact same problem. I am sick of sending mails to the guys at securom... and also sick of publishers using this protection.

Let me hear if you get a positive respond.

blitz: I assume the reinstall/repatch hasn't solved your original problem...but can you now generate a log file using the command line? i.e. if you delete the one you made whilst unpatched and try again is one now generated?

I would assume that a log file from after patching would be more use to them, since without the patch Securom is working as intended.

Zopper: you can post a hijackthis log if you like, to add to our pool of information here.

Everyone post a dxdiag as well, perhaps you have some hardware in common.

TBS, thanks for the answer. I am just annoyed with all the hassle I have with bought games not running...

With Crysis I ended up with a fixed exe from Securom - guess they will do the same in this case.
I just hate to need to contact the customer support. :-(

TBS
24th Oct 08, 11:35 AM
Yes, Securom have provided fixed exes to people having trouble with the DoW games in the past. As I mentioned before it was normally caused by some obscure DVD writer.

I imagine it will take longer here because a patch to the game has caused the issue, hopefully with all of you emailing in they will be able to tell you what it is thats causing the problem and produce a new exe for you.

Please not my new email to securom below after the new solution they sent me - a forcer application to generate an analysis file, still did not work.
You can also see their previous email below.

eldar_warrior

Thank you again.
However i have just tried this correctly twice and no analysis file was created in the root directory of my C:/drive.
i only saw the emulator detected warning again.
Can you help again please?

Thank you

Hello.

Thank you for your email.

Attached comes a file, please download and rename it back to forcer.zip. (To
rename: right-click on the icon. From dropdown menu, go down to 'rename' and
rename to 'forcer.zip', without the quotes.)

Double click the file, a new window opens. Now start the file that is
displayed.

Then start the game, and an analysis file should be created and saved to the
root directory of your C:/drive. Please attach this to your next email to us.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Using my spare dvd rom was the solution. I was more pissed off when it worked..
Agreed, what nuisance that it would be something so obvious. In my case, my cd rom is:

Model: MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR-8588
Driver: 5.01.2600.5512

I'll try the other cd to see if it works. Good luck sorting it out everyone.

blitznwl: aha, well I'm glad that we have identified the cause of the problem (for you at least). If you could pass that information on to the Securom support people that will hopefully aid them in produceing a fixed exe for everyone. In the past whenever a DVD drive has been the cause they have provided a fixed exe to the person affected and that solved the issue, if you can live without your drive until that happens I guess thats you sorted :)

Magnus: well, you dont have the same model drive as blitznwl but its still possible that one of your drives is the cause - although if you dont have a spare DVD drive we can't test it (your other drive is CD only, right?).

This thread has been very helpful.

Just a thought.

Do we know if any previous games like Dark Crusade use emulators to be able to play without the CD?

Do we know if the program in soul storm may recognize other games like Dark crusade and return the emulation error?

I only have dark crusade and Soul Storm installed.

At this point is seems like anything could be possible.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the help in advance.

The earlier DoW games were patched to remove their CD check, thats not the same as using an emulator.

We can assume that the other DoW games won't be the cause of this issue - the patch has been through a thorough QA process, the cause will be something fairly obscure (such as blitznwl's DVD drive).

Just an FYI: unplugged my DVD-Burner.
Sadly with no effect at all - still waiting for a message from Securom.

Take care guys

Securom is not serious, they could have tested their virus, err program. They follow and they will end like Starforce.

yes i just borrowed a dvd drive from a friend and this has fixed the issue.

Obviously it is pot luck and some dvd drives won't work on this game.

sounds like a small number but BLOODY annoying.

Zopper, borrow a dvd drive from a friend's pc, and replace your main drive while disconnecting other dc/dvd drive.
See how it goes.

TBS you've been a gent throughout.

Everyone else, this was my last email to securom.

At least for this issue - now i'm wondering why my cd key has
never worked for dark crusade.

Doesn't matter cos i'm always eldar.

If anyone ever sees eldar_woven_spirit in the lobby that's me - come play :o)

Hi securom,

This lazy sending of automatic responses means you just sent me something i had already tried which failed and i had already informed you about.

Anyway,
i borrowed a dvd drive and this fixed it.
You need to sort this out so it doesn't have this problem for people.

Unbelievable

the patched version of the game has no problems what so ever with daemon tools. i have daemon tools and can run the game just fine. 2 emulated drives 0 problems.

just wanted to point that out. ill save the anti-securom speech for another day. :)

aiedail: as with everyone else - contact Securom. If swopping out your DVD drive to test is an option then go for it...but even if that works you should still contact Securom. Permanently disconnecting part of your PC is NOT something I'm about to start advocating as a valid solution to this or any issue.

My last e-mail response from SecuROM Support:

Hello. Thank you for your email.

Please remove the latest patch and contact the software publisher regarding this issue. It seems you have installed a wrong patch for your software version. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Best regards, SecuROM Support Team
SecuROM on the web: http://www.securom.comor via e-mail: support@securom.com

So pretty much the same thing that happens every time there's a technical issue like this; THQ blames SecuROM, SecuROM blames THQ. Good luck sorting it out everyone, thanks for posting (particularly TBS,) I appreciate your help.

TBS

Well, this is definately a Securom issue - the patch contained a Securom update (taking it from 7.00.00.0027 to 7.00.00.0033 according to this post (http://forums.relicnews.com/showpost.php?p=3230724&postcount=219)) and that is causing this issue for a fairly small number of people (you guys).

It is probably worth contacting THQ support about this and including the email from Securom - hopefully that will get someone at THQ to talk to someone at Securom and maybe get us a bit closer to an official resolution.

If you want to continue with the Securom support at the same time then I would tell them that a) there is only one patch for Soulstorm and b) the vast majority of people have installed the patch and not experienced any further problems - I count 6 or 7 people in this thread with the problem, the patch release thread is up to 346 posts and most people seem concerned about a bug with a SoB health upgrade.

If CoH is any indication then securom is actually not in the SS executable, so the likely reason why you can't get the analysis going is precisely because you are running it on the wrong file. CoH is rs.dll (this is actually public knowledge), SS I have no idea.

Zopper

I'm exchanging mails with securom on a daily basis now :-)

Couldn't get the analysis file with right-click on the shortcut, command line or the sr0_forcer.exe...
We'll see with what they come up next.

Cheers

For Soulstorm, SecuROM is in rsss.dll and its version is 7.37.0008.

I have the same problem. Pre-patch no problems what so ever. Once I installed the patch it didn't work. Now I did have daemon installed on this computer but even after uninstalling it and removing all traces of it from registry etc. Still isn't working.

Sadly im not one who can afford to buy a new DVD drive everytime a freaking patch messes things up.

I think that my best bet is waiting for someone to create a crack for 1.2 :(

dreddnott

That wouldn't be a good idea even if it didn't violate the EULA - Soulstorm is so far off the pirate radar at this point, it could be several months. Press the issue with SecuROM, let them know there's a problem.

I believe Relic has heard us and are working on a fix for the patch.

I hope they can resolve the issues soon.

That hotfix is out now, Jetfighter. :)

Doesn't affect the copy protection in any way, just a couple nasty balance-related bugs.

you gotta be kidding me, this is such bullcrap. I have been trying to deal with this issue since the patch first came out, no one seems to take our problems seriously, i'm running an old comp that i have upgraded as far as it will go already so upgrading to a new DVD drive isn't much of an option so why the hell did they put this emulator detection system in the damn game IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!! WHY!!!!! SECUROM IS RUN BY A BUNCH OF IDIOTS WHO APPARENTLY CARE SO LITTLE ABOUT YOU THAT THEY SEND AUTOMATIC MESSAGES TO TRY TO MAKE THE PROBLEM GO AWAY!!! I'm sorry but i believed i spent good money on this game so companies like securom, THQ, and Relic could stay in business and this is what happens... This is the most god awful tragedy in programming history, my god just screw over the little people and make us pay out the *** for new drives just because they want everything to be so up to date that by the time Dow2 comes out I'll be able to play it immediatly... I want a god damn refund or a god damn fix to this catastrophe that you call a patch..... I spent 40 bucks on this game the day it came out with my extremely limited funds just so this could happen... and they came out with this patch on my birthday no less.... yeah... this was one hell of a present..... :soul:

Dude I bought a GTX 260 OC on my birthday, opened it up and it was TWO HARDDRIVES GLUED TOGETHER. Boy did I have some fun trying to return that.

Anyways, securom has been in Relic games since Homeworld, and it has been pretty much one of the few industry standard DRM mechanisms for about a decade, so unfortunately you probably won't find many games out there that don't have it. Nobody's saying the only solution for you is to get a new DVD drive, the first thing we should be doing is to try and follow securom support's instructions and run analysis on the actual securom file and see if you do indeed have some weird program installed.

The other possibility is to check for new firmware for your dvd drive, but this is where you guys are going to have to post your dxdiag information.

TBS
2nd Nov 08, 3:34 PM
Landraid: I'm sorry you are having trouble but there's nothing to be achieved by venting here. You need to persist with Securom support (and possibly THQ support as well).

Also, buying a new DVD drive should not be something ANYONE who reads this thread considers doing. It is up to Securom to fix the problem.

-=Magnus=-
4th Nov 08, 2:25 PM
It's probably a moot point by now, but I'm continuing to pursue this issue with both THQ and SecuROM support. The latest e-mail go-round, for anyone who still cares:

Hello. The troubleshooting steps I went through with SecuROM were pretty limited. Everything seemed to hinge on generating one of their proprietary "Launch Analysis" reports. For whatever reason, myself and several other users were unable to to this. The ability to create a "Launch Analysis" report was supposed to be an option in the drop-down menu that appeared when you right-clicked on the Soulstorm .exe file, but it wasn't there. Apparently SecuROM's software isn't in the Soulstorm executable, SecuROM is in rsss.dll and its version is 7.37.0008. SecuROM then sent instructions to generate the report using command lines, which also didn't work. They then sent a proprietary program that was supposed to run the report called "Forcer," which also didn't work. At that point they ceased support, blamed the patch, and kicked the problem back to THQ/Relic. As I stated earlier, other users have traced the problem to its source. The Soulstorm patch contained an update to SecuROM's DRM malware you include with your product that doesn't recognize certain DVD-rom drives. Other users who reported the same problem I'm experiencing fixed it when they switched to a different DVD-rom drive. As I also stated previously, my DVD-rom drive is:

Model: MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR-8588 Driver: 5.01.2600.5512

I'm including my dxdiag with this response, even though it's already in my original support ticket. Please have someone with some technical expertise follow-up with SecuROM to expand the list of supported DVD-rom drives so that more Soulstorm fans can enjoy the product post-path. Thanks.

Until either THQ or Securom release some kind of fix I encourage everyone to keep trying. It looks like you might be getting somewhere with THQ.

Here a Steam user who has problems with protection systems too. Please carefully read this:

So, if we Steam users have this problem too it surely doen's have to do with SecuROM...

TBS

That doesn't appear to be the same problem at all, this problem occured after installation of the first patch and is clearly a securom issue. Your problem seems to be that steam has sent you an additional patch (after the second official patch) which has done something to bugger the game up for you.

The only relationship between the two problems is this rsss.dll which we have discovered in this thread contains the securom code (for physical copies of the game at least).

What you need to do is contact Steam and find out what this extra update is they've sent you and why its broken your game.

Odd thing is there is a post in the following thread http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=743547 (see the post from ChrisD), that people at Valve cannot replicate the problem?

6th Nov 08, 1:00 AM
The current running theory is that people managed to use the retail patch on steam and then steam updated it again and things got fubared. I think it'd be rather easy to figure out what the differences would be, the only problem is you can't reproduce it anymore because Steam doesn't let you download older version of SS.

PurSpyk!!
6th Nov 08, 1:57 AM
It is not a problem with the conflicting patches. I uninstalled the game, used my backups I made when I origanlly purchased the game ie unpatched version. Steam then updated and the game would not run. The problem is the rsss.dll file, which if you replace allows you to play the game.

There are also 2 error files created each time you run the game, with or without the new rsss.dll, there is an errot txt file and a dmp file.

These files have been created since the release of the 1.1 update.

Live thread, live! Anyone making any headway on this issue? I continue to pester both THQ and SecuROM, but they only seem to respond once a week with e-mails that simply re-hash old information, such as telling me to un/re-install the game, which I've already done. Anyone else hear anything back from either organization on the "emulator detected" error?

Good Morning,

I emailed THQ and got the same response that it was securom's fault.

I sent an email telling securom that I could not run the launch analysis file, included a screenprint, offered to send a Belarc analysis file to them.
I also asked if they had any software to help locate and identify the emulation software that the program was detecting.

I was thinking that if there was a way to access the specific code that checked for emulation software, maybe we could post a list of the programs it was designed to check for.

Could it be detecting install files for emulation programs that are not installed such as nero?

What do you think?

Is it possible?

I'll let y'all know what I receive from Secorum.

Thanks for your help with this.

Its possible, although previously (years ago) people being blocked by securom due to emulation software were then able to play once the software was uninstalled.

Also, as at least two people in this thread have solved the issue by swopping out their DVD drive that suggests that securom is checking hardware, not just software. I can only assume that they have a list of known "signitures" for emulated drives, and that these happen to match some physical drives - hence the problem.

simanos
15th Nov 08, 5:05 PM
I think it's more sinister. Some drives were considered unprotected or easily cracked (for example the region 1-2 thing for DVDs and other stuff) so they are blacklisted too.

loser
16th Nov 08, 4:39 AM
the better question would be, why is securom checking hardware at all?

the irony in it all is, due to the lack of support from Sony/Securom, the only way to solve this problem is to use emulation software to bypass Securom all together.

i would explain how to do it but i believe its against forum rules. even if it is to help legitimate customers. :-\

Why is SecuRom checking hardware? They'd say they aren't. It just happens that your hardware signature is too similar to some emulated drive software sig. I think they'd be lying partly though. Cheap Chinese unprotected region free DVD drives make a killing so of course Sony and others will gang up on them.

This is the end of the line for me on this issue. The latest responses I've received for my support requests...

Are you still in contact with SecuROM at all? Do you have a different DVD drive you are able to try with the game? Unless we notice something which appears to be out of place, perhaps some type of software, then we will be at a loss as to why this is being caused.
Thank you for your email. You propably downloaded a wrong patch. Please contact the software publisher regarding this issue. We can't help you in this case, the software publisher has to tell you which patch to install.
Needless to say, I'm disappointed at this resolution - or more accurately, lack of one. I understand this was an obscure issue, but I hoped to get to the bottom of it. I'm just not tech-savvy enough to pursue it further, and have no intention of replacing hardware just to play one game - more specifically, the patched version of the expansion to one game. Hope the rest of you have better luck.

Here's an update on my journey to fix the problem.

I have been working with Securom for some time now trying to generate a launch analysis file. They had me trying the command line approach among others. Here recently they wanted me to create another admin user and a non admin user. Instead I thought to test out some of the other DOW games I had on my computer to see if I could get one generated.

I have DOW, Winter assult, DC, and soulstorm on my computer. I discovered that if I right-clicked on the 40k.exe or the 40kWA.exe files I had the option to generate a launch analysis file.

Curiously though, when I right-clicked on the actual Winterassult.exe file or the soulstorm.exe file the option did not appear. So I ran an analysis file on the 40k.exe file, zipped it and sent it to Securom to see if they could use it. Since it says it is similiar to msinfo32.exe, I thought they may be able to use it for soulstorm.

I'll keep you all posted on how this goes. Maybe there is something in the soulstorm.exe file that the 40k.exe file doesn't have that prevents the analysis file from being generated. Any ideas?

I hope this information will be helpful for others who share our struggle.

TBS

Unfortunately, I doubt that log file will be much use to them - the older DoW games are using the older version of Securom which isn't blocking any of you guys from playing. The log file you sent will probably just say that everything is fine.

I don't understand why they haven't been testing out the DVD drives people have reported problems with - at least a couple of people in this thread solved the issue by switching drives and gave that information to Securom support. They should have bought one of the offending drives and set it up on a test machine by now.

FYI all, I have discovered by researching this that it is indeed a DVD-Rom problem.

Older DVD Roms are being detected as virtual roms, or something like that. Either way, most forums out there say get a new drive and problem solved.

Sucks. But it was an update to the Secure rom file that did it with the patch.

I too am affected, but SS suxx anyways so don't feel too bad :() :stupido:

A new drive has fixed the problem in all who have tried it. So that is your best bet, Secure rom can have you run diagnostic crap all day, but it won't help you.

I'm not buying a new drive yet, and by the time I get my new laptop DoW II will be out so m00t point.

Good luck all, I would buy a new drive if I were you. With all the hours you are spending attempting to fix it, you could get a part time job and buy a new drive. LOL.

Cheers

TBS

On the one hand a new drive is dirt cheap, a decent DVD writer will cost less than a new game. However, this is clearly some sloppy coding by Securom and I don't want to recommend people go out and buy new hardware, even cheap hardware, to bypass Securom's mistake.

I'd just like someone to get an email back from Securom acknowledging that the DVD drive is the cause and that theyre working on it. If not then this is only going to affect future games released with the newer version of Securom (such as DoW 2).

Good Morning,

I tried Macbug's suggestion and was unable to get the analysis option. I think there may be something in the coding for the soulstorm.exe file that may be preventing it. Or maybe it is my system.

Update on Securom:

Securom asked me where I got the patch, so I attached a link to the file front location where the patch was located. I am waiting to hear back.

I agree that this problem has serious ramifications if Securom cannot get this resolved.

I am going to work with Securom to get this issue resolved.

except get banned for playing online with a crack.

TBS
13th Dec 08, 6:07 AM
Cracks violate the game EULA so we don't like people to discuss them here. Also, they are unofficial and can cause problems when installing subsequent patches - many people would prefer to have an official solution for this kind of problem.

simanos
13th Dec 08, 3:24 PM
Except there is no solution...
This is a grey area of the law. If you go at a ("legal") site with cracks it will tell you that you aren't allowed to download a crack for a game you haven't really bought. The EULA stuff doesn't trump Country laws or Consumer/Customer Rights. That's all assuming you did pay...
In the end they will never ban someone who is using a proper CD-key to play online if he behaves well but simply uses a no-cd crack (they only ban hacks, maphacks, etc). It would be so much bad press and he could sue them for money too in most cases. And they don't care really about that, you're a satisfied customer to them, who cares if you used a no-cd crack as long you have a valid cd-key for online multiplayer, to them that means you bought the game. And it's almost a perfect logic.

I know we aren't supposed to discuss cracks, but in my defense I didn't give a URL to a site or a name of a site (tbh I don't know any, I have friends who are computer experts who do it for me). I wish there were other solutions, but they are invading our privacy TOO MUCH as it is. What gives a game company the right to restrict what programs I use in my PC? None of their business and it's unfair competition too. Even Microsoft got nailed for that a few times. I can have any DVD burning tool or virtual drive tool I want. If you show me the line in the EULA that says you aren't allowed to have "named" tool installed to play this game and I bet a bunch of lawyers will be ready to sue them fast!

TBS
14th Dec 08, 4:39 AM
I agree with the sentiment and I realise that noone is ever going to be prosecuted for using a noCD crack on a game they own. However, it has been policy here for as long as I can remember to gently enforce the EULA by preventing people from linking to cracks.

And there should be an official solution - someone at Securom made a mistake with the latest update causing it to be set off by people with real DVD drives. They need to release a quick patch to fix it.

Well tbh honest they are the people who screwed over the customer with their software in the latest patch, and alot of THQ customer base have problems wich can carry over in future sales.
So it´s definitely in their interest to take this issues serious. Instead of letting the customers do the work for them!

So they should man up and rectify it.

If YOU like to mail support than go ahead and play debug game but that´s not what I´m paying for!

The issue is not about my right to be "angry" the issue is a deficit in the latest P A T C H that prevents me to even playing the game that I bought. I could easily sit down and try to solve this issue but why should I as a paying customer do that?

If you check in to a hotel and your bed is broken do you call the manufatoror that made the part that is broken and get non descript auto response email back as answer?

TBS
26th Dec 08, 5:19 PM
You dont contact the bed manufacturer, you contact the hotel reception. With the game, you dont contact the manufacturer (Relic) you contact the supplier (THQ).

Bitching here won't achieve anything - you need to contact them so they know there's a problem. The more people who report the issue the more likely they are to commit resources to fixing it.

I have some progress to report in my journey to get this emulation issue resolved.

I contacted Securom who basically told me that the game disc didn't have Securom protection but that the patch did. So they refered me back to THQ.

I contacted THQ again and gave them a Belarc file of everything in my computer, (I pasted the info into Word and uploaded the file.) The only other piece of information they needed was whether I had purchased a box copy of the game or downloaded the game from a website. They said the testing team is working on a solution. I'll hear more when they have a solution.

Hope this helps.

I'll keep you posted as more develops.

Hi all. Yeah I've juat bought SS and I am having the same problems. I was wondering if anyone had found a fix yet (Appart from a new DVD drive)?

I am currently talking to THQ and what they have said so far is, to dewactivate/remove emulatore ect. and to update my drivers. Tried that (and going back) still nothing.

Any help would be loved.
