Same as last year, and the year before, actually.

lost the url of where I found it, but there is a night-time version of this as well, which i want. :(

Why i use it for so long? Because it's so detailed. No matter how long you look at it (hehe, 2 years going) you always find something new, and i've found myself just ogling the image absorbing the huge amounts of detail. Very inspirational as well.

It's at least 2x as big as my screen resolution (in area), and my icons wouldn't interest you. Theme set to windows classic. can't be bothered with anything "expensive". :p

I saw a clean purrty mac desktop, and— well, I fell in love. So I have strived to keep my desktop clean since then. Only the absolute necessities (I don't know why it installed gpgnet to desktop and iz afraid of moving it should it not work.)
Quick explanation: Recently fiddled with spring and concluded it was shit. Why do they have such nice icons but such ugly apps? Link to steamapps for easy gmod addon install, addon folder for addons I don't want loaded and "-dev -console +map" link to gmod because those very same parameters don't work from inside hammer (????) Was playing around with a map or two.
Couple of small apps I couldn't bother to put links to in start menu and bury in C:/ somewhere and of course gpgnet – see above.

BG unchanged because, I would have used an "MS will rule the earth" -style BG. But I figured, wtf am I doing? How better to show my support than using the unchanged, clean, beautiful Aero BG?
I like it a lot tbh, it has depth, it's simple and easy on the eyes. Without cluttering the icons. All the things I look for in a wallpaper.

Just Vista in disguise. Why should I dedicate any system power for silly visual enhancements that even doesn´t look good. GTA IV needs everything it can grab. The only luxury I have is the background pic.

Also, a tip that USED to work on XP (Before vista destroyed this option, bizarrely):

Add your desktop as a toolbar to the start bar (right click, toolbars --> desktop).
Unlock the start bar and drag the toolbar off to the left side of the screen. Drag it sideways so you can read the icons (ie expand it), then autohide it as well.

Hide desktop icons.
Hey presto - same functionality (except 1 click instead of 2), expandable folder browsing from the toolbar (I always put my documents at the top, and you can browse through the whole directory structure without having to go into explorer), and it looks way better!

This the SE corner of my island (Jersey); you can just about see the coast of France on the horizon.

On a spring tide (which can reach nearly 12 metres/40 feet here: look at these two photos I took at our main harbour: LINK (http://www2.b3ta.com/host/creative/6072/1220187623/tidalrangeinjersey.jpg); those massive blocks of stone are over a metre high), you can walk out to the tower in the distance (Seymour Tower), but you have to be extremely wary of the tide on the way back because it rises at over 2 inches/50mm per minute at peak flow (between the third and fourth hours) of the six hour tide.

These are the hours when, according the twelths rule, 50% of the tidal movement occurs: 1st hour: 1/12th; 2nd hour: 2/12ths; 3rd hour: 3/12ths; 4th hour: 3/12ths; 5th hour: 2/12ths; 6th hour; 1/12th. During the 3rd and 4th hours of our largest spring tides, the sea level will rise by almost 6 metres/20 feet...

(I took this today - Feb 15th - there are no icons because this screen is used as an extended desktop for my laptop).

Using - Rainlender with "Sidewall" Skin
Rainmeter with "Pi Squared", "MoxaWeather" and "HUD.Vision" plugins.
Takes a while to customise, but I think the results are pretty damn good.

Desktop Window Manager. Also known as dwm.exe
It's the thing Aero runs under. And the process that steals all your resources. I usually optimised by using compatibility tab and checking disable desktop compositing or somesuch, which disables aero freeing up those resources. I however found that it does that completely automatically, exactly as advertised. So I stopped doing that.
But if you need speed for the desktop then sure. I just don't understand why you don't use vista basic though, classic looks too much "beige IBM box" for my tastes.

The most anoying part is when you play an old game that resizes your screen, and when you get back out of it, for some asshat reason it has thrown around all your desktop shortcuts, ruining your perfect organisation.

You could try the program i'm using Moth, the Fences (http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/) public beta from Stardock. I constantly switch between a Widescreen LCD, and a normal CRT monitor, and play games with various resolutions on both, and it keeps my icons in place, plus you can hide all icons with a doubleclick.
