Multiplayer unlocks

I have gotten a few multiplayer unlocks, like some shoota boy armor and loota armor I think. Do these actually do anything? And when do I get unlocks for my commanders, also do they do anything?

its purely visual for sm, everyone else either got minor changes such as different colors... mostly nid got different colours.

Color differences are still purely visual, they do not affect gameplay in any way.
