Hi,
This is about the fourth or fifth time this has happened to me now, and initially it wasn't too much of a problem, but the last time it happened was the straw that broke the camel's back.
I've had problems with the game freezing on mission loading screens since release day. I'm running Vista (with SP1 and all recommended Windows Updates), so tried the suggestion of lowering my Texture Details and Effects Fidelity settings to medium. This seemed to alleviate the problem to an extent, although it would normally freeze after playing one or two missions. As a result, I'd taken to playing one mission, saving and exiting the game, then repeating the process. It would still sometimes freeze on the first mission I tried to play, forcing me to hard reset my computer. I'd like to add that the game has never frozen during gameplay, or at any other time, only on mission loading screens with a progress indicator. The sound enters into a continuous short loop when it freezes.
A couple of times during the first week after release, the game would freeze, I'd restart my computer, and my campaign progress had been lost. My Force Commander was no longer listed, and the only option was to start a new campaign. The save game file is still there in my Documents\My Games\Dawn of War 2\Saved Games\ folder as a .SAV file, but the game refuses to see them. I've now deleted my old save games, and have created new save games under new names each time.
I'd been doing fine until a couple of days ago when the game froze on the first attempt at playing a mission. I restarted the computer, and lo-and-behold, my save game had disappeared from the menu again. Once again, the file is still there in the above folder, but the game refuses to see it. The reason I'm so annoyed this time is because I'd pretty much finished mopping up most of the optional missions and was very close to starting the final mission. Now it looks like I've got to do it all over again.
I've attached my DxDiag.txt and warnings.txt, however, I'm not sure how useful the warnings.txt will be as I'd obviously run the game again since the freeze, to discover that my save game was missing, and therefore the warnings.txt has been overwritten. I had a look to see if Windows had maintained a previous version of the file that I could restore from, but no such luck. I can post another warnings.txt the next time the game freezes if that would be useful.
I'm going to try making a copy of the save game file, then starting a new campaign under the same name and then overwriting this new save file to see if this re-establishes the link with the game, but I'm pretty sure I'm just clutching at straws here.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, or even an acknowledgement that the issue is being looked into and may be rectified in a future patch would be great. I'd really like to carry on playing the game, but it's getting pretty tedious having to tip-toe around the constant freezing.
EDIT:
OK, I've just tried playing around with the save game files, creating a new campaign with the same name, then overwriting with my original save game, but still no luck. I opened both the new save game and the old one in Notepad, and my old save game is just full of blank characters. The new save game has plenty of information in it.
I've attached both save game files as well, just in case they help to shed any light on the situation.
