View Full Version : Warhammer 40K Dev Team?

So Relic guys... who's on the Warhammer 40K Dev Team?

Let's have some introductions all around... I'll start (even though I don't work for Relic)...

My name is Tyler. You may know me from such things as Relicnews.com, these forums, and my time at Relic during the final days of Homeworld 2's development. I'm also cast as your neighborhood game developer stalker. Expect to see me in the future at things like E3 and maybe even standing next to your desk :-P

Yeah I'd like to know who is devving this up too. Will we see any familiar faces?

And uber, can you go sneak around Relic tomorrow and peak through some windows? You can bring some trikki ninjas to help.

Whoever drew this concept art is most likely in the team. (http://www.relic.com/images/misc/40K_RTS_large.jpg)

As a fan, I plan on being Relic's unofficial pain in the arse until DoW is released.

I don't work for Relic either, but pik0r asked me to moderate this forum, a request to which I graciously acceded.

When Uber says he doesn't work for Relic, what he really means is "They don't pay me." This is how come he knows so much sekrit stuff he never tells the rest of us (but hints at in an irritating manner); the fact that he lives next door probably helps too.

(it's true - he lives in a little orange tent on a vacant lot next to Relic's offices)

No, the windows are all on the 4th floor... although there is a nearbye parking garage that you can see in a bit. The warhammer team's in an area with really high windows though I think :-/

Well, I'm the lead designer on Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, and the one who came up with the initial concepts for the project. Before Warhammer I was the Lead Designer on IC.

I'm glad to see so much positive feedback on our announcement. It's been hard working in silence for so long. :)

Played warhammer 3D a few years back...and luved it.
SO YOU GUYS BETTER MAKE THIS UP TO MY EXPECTATIONS!!

WOOT! glad to meet ya Shadione! My name is dave and i have been playing WH40K since its release, i would love to help out on the project in any way shape or form :) at any rate, should we start posting questions here or make a whole new tread devoted to them? I only have one burning question at the moment... is it gonna be a resource gathering game or a 'you pick em, now play em' type (i am praying for the latter). Thanks for sticking your neck out and saying hello and i am exstatic that GWS finally got a software dev that knows what they are doing.

Wohoo! We can finally say "hi" :)

So, Im Andrew, Im a designer on DoW, doing a bit of everything.

I worked on HW2, where I was responsible for making sure the single player game got done. Before that, I was on ICPC, working on missions and whatever else came my way.

I have, um, 5 real 40k armies now, working on my 6th. Orks, Dark Angels, Chaos (heavily Khorne influenced), Imp Guard, Eldar, and I just started on my Grey Knights. I love my khorne, but the eldar path is calling to me...

Krogoth: The person that did the concept art work is Andy Lang, our Lead Artist.

TechHardy
11th Dec 03, 12:53 PM
Why is it that concept art is good but when I see that relic style concept art it just makes me swoon.

That concept art makes me so exited about 40k. Andy Lang is now my new god.

I just want to say thanks in advance for working on this. With your amazing work on Homeworld (Which i had to quit playing to play warhammer Ironically) you guys are the reason why a great deal of the warhammer community has alot of faith and is very excited about this game.

I don't know what you guys have in mind for the game but we would love to hear some of your ideas if you can talk about them at all. Would it be possible to share some of your concept ideas and what you have in mind.

I'd just like to make something clear. I'm one of the leads on a freakin' fantastic team of people who are creating Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. Didn't want to imply anything other than that.

Well I certainly can't wait to see what the universe you guys have created so far and how it looks! I've got quite a few varying ides of what you guys have picked. So i'll be eagerly awaiting to see what relic has done.

oh ...AND THANK god sierra isn't a part of it.... I know have much more faith that you guys can pull this off! Cause it seems like quite the undertaking!!

This thread reminds me of the start of a war movie like The Flying Misfits or Memphis Belle etc. where you're introduced to all the main characters straight up at a roll call of sorts. Or maybe League of Extraordinary Gentlemen where one guy runs around putting his team together.

Its pretty cool.

[edit] btw - do you guys have the power to merge together into some kind of giant robot or something? That would be cool. You could call yourselves Developor!

SvK
15th Dec 03, 10:16 AM
Someone at Relic should register the name Developer and give the password to everyone in the office. Then it would be a giant, creepy collective user! It would sometimes disagree with itself, and you'd never be sure who you were talking to.

If you put "or" instead of "er" on the end it sounds more like a old school giant robot name - especially if you emphasise it. Try it and see!

DEVELOPOR!

My name is Shawn... just thought I'd say hi.

I'm one of the original artists on DoW. I've created many of the units for the game which I can't comment on now. Mostly this, some of that, and a few of those... :) I will also be designing the ingame UI and front end.

I previously worked briefly on Homeworld2 setting the style for the ingame UI and also worked on the IC Insect Invasion mod as a texture and special effects artist.

I don't play the tabletop but I've always been a huge fan of the universe and art of WH40K. It's a ton of fun to bring these characters to the digital world.

Waiting to play my Blood drinkers (I meant Blood Angels), or maybe Ultra Marines...

Can't decide...

Thing is, there are A LOT of ways this game can go.
I want to say to RELIC, to keep focused to the game as it was originally conceived. Going all out, basically means losing out in the end.

Tight, focused and EXTREMELY moddable. That's how I imagine DoW.

All the luck in the world. You guys are worth it!

Well Shadione, as long as you and your fellow developers pay attention to that wishlist (we know it's asking a lot but if you build it... we will play... and buy) you'll do much to appease the very difficult masses.

We can't really comment on development time at this point. Sorry.

As for ideas from fans affecting the game...since a good chunk of the dev team are big-time WH40k tabletop fans, you could say ideas from fans are having a *huge* influence on the game. :)

Foley
26th Feb 04, 2:32 AM
I had to Try =)... anyway I hope Relic Understands to make something new, and one point warhammer 40k is not kid rated stuff, I liked Relics visual style on homeworld series. and I cant wait to see same on warhammer 40k game but remember to make it much as possible warhammer 40k game!

ah this waiting makes me... anyway as fan of warhammer 40k
I really hope you guys make something unique...

thankyou!!!

it is awesome to know that finally a 40k game will be released that captures the feeling and atmosphere of commanding forces in the 41st mellenium.

one important question, will it be released on ps2 as well as pc to make up for the tragic firewarrior game? (you gotta awnser this!)

and pleeeese dont let the tyranids be sigle player opponents only!!! it would be too much of a tease having the hive mind in front of me and not being able to guide them to victory!

also will the entire cast of demons be with the chaos forces? if nids arnt in the game at least i'll have the next best "rippin machines" in the galaxy at my disposal.

thanx for the hard work so far and i cant wait to enjoy your collective artwork!!!

Don't take this as a final answer z-beam, but I'm 99.9% sure that Relic's not developing it for anything other than PC.

Maximus Decimus
2nd Mar 04, 2:28 PM
yeah besides are RTS games could console games? no. do they sell good? no just take a look at the history. anyway therefore iv come to conclude that in all probebility no it wont be for ps2 and i rlly think the interface sucks unless u can buy a mouse and keyboard for the ps2.

DarthFelth
3rd Mar 04, 3:30 AM
well, i have never been a big fan of RTS games on consoles, besides i think PC's are more for RTS and consoles for shooters and racers

z-beam
3rd Mar 04, 5:59 AM
a fire wire port and two usb jacks provide all the necissary elements for utilising networked rts heaven. and it does support a keypad and mouse, not to mention usb webcams.

the only rts i've seen on the ps2 has been age of empires, and that was way out of date when that was released.

you guys i take it mostly use your pc's right? not that it matters but there a lot of ppl out there who would buy a copy for ps2 over pc cos of the simplicity of setting it up and costs. that and multiplay is great fun! wether its a lan (2x telly's,2x ps2's and 2x copies of the game) or over a broad band set up it would really make many happy to have a real good rts on ps2.

z-beam
3rd Mar 04, 6:06 AM
darth... some of the most involving simulations to date have been pioneered on ps2. one shining example of perfection is the armoured core series.
i wouldnt limit types of games to certain platforms. gta: vice city for example sold so many copies on ps2, but when released for pc some amazing person created the thing all ps2 players wanted, multiplayGTA.

i wouldn't ask for simultanious release, and i would expect someone else to handle the 'port to ps2, but i do hope it happens.

DarthFelth
3rd Mar 04, 8:51 AM
well to be fair, i perfer them on my pc, and why would i wanna get extras to use a keyboard for a ps2 when i have a PC, and i do have the orignal gta and gta2 on my pc, i never played it multiplayer, however i always found that the controls were better on the console :p

ÜberJumper
3rd Mar 04, 9:21 AM
one shining example of perfection is the armoured core series.

Sorry, that's not anywhere near perfection.

Consoles do not come by default with Keyboards and Mice, therefore making it very difficult to do a "Traditional" RTS game on a console. If the installed base of Keyboard and Mice + hard drive + network for the PS2 was as big as PC, then maybe.

Anyway, it's not the type of game for a console IMO.

Maximus Decimus
3rd Mar 04, 1:40 PM
oh and u mentioned playing multi on ps2? well its much easier to play multi with a pc and RTS games run good with even 56k modems...besides u dont have to pay a monthly charge for online support.

DarthFelth
3rd Mar 04, 3:49 PM
the only thing against PC's is the base cost, but i got one so i dont mind :)

z-beam
6th Mar 04, 10:04 AM
hey guys... i'm trying to say something to the devs so give me a break.

uber i'm interested tho in what you mean by base? no you dont need a sony made mouse or keyboard if thats what you mean, any usb mouse will work.

He means the number of people who actually have mice and keyboards for their consoles is pretty low.

'Nids are still quite possible (I as well will cross my fingers). If not that , then perhaps some Thousand Sons? WAIT, WAIT, gw would never allow Thousand Sons a part in this game, for they are destined to be forever screwed in everything 40k related! Ah well, some 'Nids then...
