View Full Version : Dawn of War's modability...

I imagine the (threads) title says it all.
Can we expect to see the amazing amount of modability found in HW2 (and presumably IC (which I don't have))?
I think it would be absolutely amazing if DaW does have that kind of modability...
So, devs, are you allowed to tell us about this yet?

Given how GW is on their IP, I find it actually rather unlikely that this game will have any modability. Now this isnt a definate "it wont be" but GW has a history of being VERY controlling on their IP, to the point of being a bunch of facists (:

Too true, but who says any mods would have to be Warhammer (or any GW IP) related?
Knowing Relic, I'll keep my hopes up. :)

yeah. GW are fascist bastards in the eyes of some. I say they have good business practice, but it can be annoying for the likes of us.

even if it isn't built for modability, i'd still say that this community will be able to mod it regardless... *cough* HW1*cough* ;)

It may not be Warhammer related, but depending on the contract the game itself might become GWs IP, [like Homeworld is Sierra's IP]. That would mean that releasing a mod in any way shape or form still involves GWs IP, and while historically mods have only benefited an original game by proloning its lifespan, GW could still definitively say no.
Plus to mod it you'd have to wade through stuff that is DEFINATELY GW IP, so I simply dont see it happening. But it might, and they really cant do much to prevent us from modding it HW1 style.

uh guys.
Ever heard of something called NetEpic? LONG time project, with no issues from GW. There are certain rules you have to follow, sure. And official support for modding might not be there. But I don't see the issues as long as people follow the rules... (stuff like clearly labeling it as unofficial, not using GW screenshots...)

I doubt theyll allow modding the units.
Making maps yeah, but not new race or new squad creation.
Coz that would impair any add ons with those new races or squads.
For example, if the original game has only Blood Angels And Orcs as the two races (quite possible as GW seem to limit the possible races in all their games). They could then release the Eldar as an add on pack. If modding of units is allowed, what stops someone porting the Eldar armies quicker than the addon release?

Who says the addons can't be the mods themselves?
It's happened before. (http://www.counter-strike.net/)
I'd like to see moddable unit AI. It allows for more effective strategies when you can rely on your troops to make simple decisions for themselves.
