Baby sitting. I hate it. A lot, and especially whenyou're supposed to protect a large convoy of very fragile freighters and the mission won't tolerate ANY loss.....

Especially in XwA (X-Wing Alliance) when you had to intercept hundreds of proton torpedoes from hitting a frig... escort missions are tedious and boring. I didn't much like the Cata one either...

Now, giving the escorted ships special abilities makes it better, like while you have the escortees you have better radar coverage or something like that, something that gives you a REASON to protect them, a personal reason, not just because that is the objective...

One thing that might improve the enjoyment factor for these types of missions is putting the important unit(s) under your direct control. Let the player control when and where they move. It would open up quite a bit as far as different strategies for getting the units somewhere saftely.

I hate it when the convoy or whatever gets ahead of me and meets its own demise. Missions like that tend to be less fun because the player has little control over the situation. It's simply a mad race to destroy everything coming at the important unit(s). Make the unit(s) controllable, and things would be better.

Or at least give some controllability over them, some decent AI. I hate it when they go from point A to B at a constant speed, not waiting for you, even though point B is full of big bad ships....

Although it wasn't that great of a game, Ground Control gave you control of your escortee tanks. Nice and easy to put them in an out-of-the-way crater so I can blow up the baddies before moving them into the place wherever they needed to be.

Escort missions I find tedious and long...but the almost endless supplies of enemies each one usually comes with makes up for it.

Hmm, which one do you think?

Annoying Escort Missions > Lots of kills

or

Lots of kills > Annoying Escort Missions

If you answered 1 then:

You don't care much about getting tons of kills because you are annoyed at having to escort.

If you answered 2 then:

You like lots of kills, even when you are annoyed at having to escort.

If you answered 3 then:

You are imagining things/you are disillusioned/you need some sleep/you need some caffine/you are crazy/you are annoyed at having to escort something/you are bored/I'm losing my mind and I really put three options in there.

I prefer difficult kills, as opposed to many kills.

i think that the baby sitting idea will have to come up in HW2. they're probably going to want to have some diversity in HW2.:ninja:

Ya, there is a big difference between difficult missions, and fatiguful missions.

If there is a mission that is much too dificult, you just get sick of it, and play something else.

If you can micromanage fast enough, they could integrate the 8x time compression into HW2. Would cut down on waiting...

I'd laugh if there was a mission where /you/ were escorted...

Give the man a prize - he just had an original idea.

That would be awesome. Overhwhelming enemy forces are closing in - your ships are no match for the sheer volume of firepower that will soon pummel them. There's no time to formulate a plan. No RUs for reinforcements. You're doomed - except there's a big, protective sphere of friendlies taking all the fire; their only objective is to keep you alive. Chaos is raging around you, yet your only task is to take out the odd straggler.

Bonus points for keeping your defenders alive until the end... brilliant!

Or I've simply been loading up on the old sugah lately.

The "escorted" mission would be a nightmare if your ship was a Taiidan heavy cruiser being attacked by the Beast.

Oh man, yeah. I hate those baby-sitting missions even more than I hate those "use three ships to defeat infinite legions of doom" levels.

If HW2 has those kinds of missions I'm gonna cry. :(

How does one defeat an infinite legion?

Kill them all?

I really hope that Homeworld 2 doesnt have missions that rely on your being prescient enough to modify your fleet mix to adapt to threats you dont even know exist yet :)

IM LOOKING AT YOU MOVER MOTHERFUCKERS!

No, you do a little jig and run in the opposite direction so that your other ships can steal their underwear.

Not even the vast legions of who-knows-what can wage war without underwear. They would be forced to surrender.

Lucky for them they just bought some theft proof underwear from me. Now, back to my quest!

Well, in an attempt to try and save this thread (unlikely, but still), What types of missions in general, be it RTS, fps, RPG, or whatever, do you personally Dislike the most? At least relic will know what it's core fanbase doesn't want to see in whatever they have up their sleeves.

I do not want to see missions where you have to think :P. If you see something just shoot it! This is not going to help save the thread is it?

Some modubagator leap in here and change the "2" in the thread title to a "3", and I be suspectin' this discussion topic will have some kerserious legs! :)
