EPIC 40,000: Final Liberation (Released 1997)

This game pits you in a brutal war between the Orcs and the Human Space Marines from the classic Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game. Using a variety of troops, vehicles and giant robots you must conquer your foes in battle.

Battles take place in turns: Each turn you get a chance to move and shoot at your enemies. Each side gets a variety of units: some are just foot soldiers, there are also tanks, hover-bikes and even giant robots. Weapons range from Bolters (big sub machine guns) to laser cannons and vortex bombs.

The plot is simply to destroy your enemy -- each mission usually works this way too. Simply get your guys together and fight.

Yeah, I remember. Problem was that when games got too big, they became Titan wars. Still good stuff though.

I still have my copy but it doesn't run on windows XP, any body know how to make it work right?

i got me hands on Chaos Gate, but it won't run, damnit.

it's looks okay right up until it gets to the title: right then, it's just all black screen, some music and a mouse pointer that has nothing to point at.

Good stuff...just got off of half a day's worth of playing that sucker and now the background music just won't....go....away...! *screams to self* *tries to breathe slowly* But I'm okay....

Hopefully DoW won't be like my earlier experiences with Final Liberation--killing that last unit of grots that snuck under a rock halfway into the cityscape with nearly my entire army wiped out while fighters that can't hold ground are still blowing me away. Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow....

Oh, wait. There was another problem. It was just a Shooty match, as assaults weren't all too good (the game processes of them were pretty random and not really encouraged). The fact that most Orks were better in assaults than the Imperials didn't help too much either.

What a Great Game, and had so much Promise! They promised expansions for different races, I had so much hope but saddly as soon as they released the first patch they stoped supporting it..point blank!

And no guys it dosent work for XP. I used to be able to get it to play by changing the mode (right clicking on the icon) but it dosent work anymore. I would love to find a hack out there that had either a fix or work around.

well you could format a 10gb partition on a hard drive as fat32 and install windows 95 or 98 on it along with final liberation and run a dual boot operating system.

Yeah it was cool multiplayer

And I DO love the scale, Space Marines were insignificant but hopefully this game will do them justice. It was like the game space marine. :dyn:

I know this is an old topic, but i found my copy of the final liberation and installed it to my computer. I had no problems with XP.. don't know why.. but. I'm interested in getting my hands on those editing tools and other expansion mods. I tried that link above, but it seems that none of those zip-files are any longer available.
If someone has those files or at least some of them, could you please put them on internet and paste the link here, or e-mail those files directly to me? I'd really appreciate it. =)

It fails to load because of the videos (as I understood it). If you disable the videos, the game should play fine for everyone.

The catch is that to disable the video, you have to make a change to the epic.ini file, which is created until the first successful run of the game and since it crashes, it never gets created.

First a disclaimer, this worked for me and in the unlikely event this does something horrible to your machine (which it shouldn't), you do this at your own risk.

There..

Create a text file called epic.ini (not epic.ini.txt if you make that mistake) in the FL directory (should be the one with the epic40k.exe in it.

Copy only the text between the dashed lines and then save the file.

------ Don't copy this bit! ----------
[Options]
MusicVol=100
FX_Volume=127
MV_Volume=127
UseGrid=0
DoVideo=0
WatchAI=1
AutoSave=1
------ Don't copy this bit! ----------

I've got the compatibility mode for win95 on and all the compatibility options (no themes, 256 colours, etc.) switched on for the epic40k.exe but don't know if that was when I originally tried to get it work.

Anyway, that should allow you play the game (with no videos sadly).

That should allow you to play the game.

I remember this game, very fun but I soon got bored of it. I absolutely loved the cutscenes though! The closest we've been to a 40k movie except for Inquisitor. I've lost the game somehow, really sad cus I would really like to play it again. I saw a screenshot of one of the cutscenes when I followed the link on this thread, and well, it wasn't as cool as I remembered, the space marine looks really small and stupid, but the Commissar is cool though.

Drachenfels
20th Dec 04, 9:31 AM
Final Liberation was sadly another bad 40K game. The cutscenes were the only decent thing about it. Too bad DoW is the only good 40K game ever made :(

20th Dec 04, 9:31 AM
Hmm... last I checked, the game could be found at the Home of the Underdogs website. Good stuff, and I did not have to fiddle around with much to get it to work on XP. That may be because I use VDMS sound on anything of that age.

Otherwise, yeah, fun game.

Holy!! Praise the Emperor, I just found my old copy!

Gonna try to install and run it, I really enjoyed this game, although the rules that governed it were an unusual chimera of 2nd and 3rd edition epic (and at the time, 3rd edition hadn't been released yet, from what I recall).

I wonder if I could find someone to play multi with... =)

It also, unfortunately, used all the old models for vehicles - they were much improved in 3rd Ed.

Btw, is anyone here actually interested in Epic TT? Because the new version (Epic Armageddon) in available from mail order US and UK. Looks pretty good, and they're following it up with model releases, including all-new Tau, Necron, and Guard armies.

the game was good indeed, but the problem, for me is that it was based on the Steel Panthers model from which they removed a ton of stuff(like terrain based detection, good penetration and accuracy model, hexagons: the square ranges were plain ridiculous).
IMO, it was a nice game overall, but it would have been better to directly port Steel Panthers than to simplify it that much .
And it really lacked variety in the armies.
I was a lot more pleased with Chaos Gate.

22nd Dec 04, 12:49 PM
Ended up installing it this afternoon. Great fun.

You can find patches for Final Liberation and Chaos Gate here: http://www.bananaking.net/cento/ssi.htm.

When installing the patch on xp the patch program gave a message that the path was invalid. I fixed this by changing the name of the directory the game was installed in from "c:\final liberation" to "c:\final", then ran the patch. Afterwards I changed the name back and the game worked fine.

Cheers

To run all those old win95 games on 2000 and XP you need to add the argument -WINCURSOR to the "Target" line of the shortcut to the game .exe

For example:

1. Right click on shortcut to game
2. Place cursor at the end of the Target field
3. add one space and the entry "-WINCURSOR" (without the quotes)
'c:\mygamefolder\mygame.exe -WINCURSOR'

Enjoy!

Wow, stumbled across Final Liberation on that site, and was amazed it's now freeware. *yay*

Also amazed to stumble across this discussion in this of all places.

Sarge, if you find those missing files, let me know. If by some miracle I find my CD again (lost it while renovating my room/office, dadblastit). I remember the scene with the Space Marine, and was amazed at the quality (compared to the game : :bandit: ). Ahh..the memories.

Thankfully, we have Dawn of War...or else we'd all cry. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some Heretical elements to dispatch with cleansing Bolter fire :D

Hi - Have recently downloaded Final Liberation from Home of the Underdogs. Unfortunately they don't supply a manual. Does anyone that has the full copy of the game have the manual. If not digital then maybe someone could scan it? Home of the Underdogs have a place where it can be uploaded or someone could email a copy.

I know this would be effort for anyone that does it, so many thanks in advance!

Killalot
18th May 05, 7:54 AM
My original copy of the game had no manual. So i doubt you'd find it. If you do, go you!

On the game itself, i love it if just for the sheer stupidity of the game. A game where ranged fights are important. IG vs Orks. Yeah right.

Star, how much is your massive infantry?

Killalot
18th May 05, 8:01 AM
You buy nearly any infantry type in 5 squads of 5 persons. You get to buy 20 places in total, so massed infantry can leave you with 640 troops if my maths are good. :p

Esa
18th May 05, 8:08 AM
Well, i dont count the mas inviduals, but as squads, cause you cant control invidual infantries.

Any1 have the cutscenes or pictures of em?

DreamReaver
18th May 05, 8:21 AM
Now THAT was a great game indeed.I still remember the huge variety of tanks,squads,weapons and detail of that game. Yeah it had Titans and Gargands which it was cool.

But it is a very rare game her in Greece so it was a big mistake that i didn't bought it then back in the 97.. :(

Hi everyone, i really loved the FL game to, i can't get it to work either on XP. I've tried running it in DOS, changing compatability modes etc etc, patching it, whatever.

Every single time, i load it up, the SSI logo zooms in, then goes blank and an error pops up in the background saying:
"The instruction at 0046c5a7 referenced memory at 01d30000
The memory could not be written

Click ok to terminate this application"

Anyone know what the prob might be??

Home of the Underdogs: Final Liberation (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=2796)

If you don't have it you can download it from there for free, its abandonware. I also think the readme that you download tells you how to get it working in WinXP, if not, just flick back a page in this thread to find out how.

Its a good wee game, for a quick laugh, and you may as well get it, as its free. ;)

sibob
20th May 05, 1:28 AM
I've the command line estension, along with the ini file thing, compatability mode on, running it in a DOS shell, i still get the same error message popping up after the SSI logo finishes. :(

Si

Le_Petit_Lapin
20th May 05, 2:59 AM
Are you trying to run DOS shells in WinXP?

Technically.....Windows XP doesnt actually have DOS, it has a command line certainly....but that aint DOS.

Try running it in Compatibility mode for Win95. Thats what I'm doing and its working fine.

Make an "Epic.ini" file in the game folder that reads as follows:

[Options]
MusicVol=100
FX_Volume=127
MV_Volume=127
UseGrid=0
DoVideo=1
WatchAI=0
AutoSave=1

File size should be 100 Bytes.
