The WH40k history is too big for any one site to cover everything.

Your best bet is to find all references to Codexes. You can start a "raw search" on the internet by using keywords derived from Games Workshop sources. One of my older, more favored sites went out months ago and I'm still unable to find a replacement.

Again, use google to find keywords. That or buy/borrow lots of Codexes.

UNITS would be doable...

individual models less so

it becomes unworkable as you go into the back history of old units

just about every model available is listed on GWs shop

Suffice to say there are somewhere around 20 different armies [though half are variants of one army (:] each army generally has at LEAST 20 unique units, on average each unit will have 3 or so different models [tanks naturally only have 1 model, but infantry often have 10 different models]

Difficult to put them all in one place. Closest you'll get to a site with a picture of EVERYTHING is
http://store.us.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.us?do=Odd&odd=NewLayout&_do=DoRace&game=3
of course that in itself isnt everything, you'll also have to browse http://www.forgeworld.com for some of the more rare units, and of course this only covers Warhammer 40,000 and the CURRENT range of models. There are far more armies that simply arent current but do exist in the history of the game.

Hmm... well I can mention that in the 2nd Ed IG Codex it showed a region of space which belonged to the S*Censored by order of the Inquisition* Race. (:

squats

Squats. Dwarves in space. Occupied a region of space close to the core, in all Star Trek defined Quadrants except the Gamma Quadrant. If I recall they were BELIEVED to just be a long removed subset of the Human Race, like Ratlings or Ogryns. However they had their own empire, powerful enough that the Humans coultnt simply annihiliate them on a whim [unlike some of the NEW GW Races *cough*Tau*cough*]

You can find pics of different types of 40K units and such at sites like www.gamesworkshop.com (go to the store) and at www.portent.net.
