Hi there, I'm coming out of retirement to join the forum again. I've not posted here for a year. Anyways, Does anyone know where windows media users can download Angus dei? I've tried looking for it everywhere, but without much luck. Can anyone help?

Woah, before anyone who hasn't read the forum rules mentions a P2P sharing site I warn you! Mentioning illegal downloads on this forum gets you banned, almost immediately. So before anyone new makes a mistake, heed my warning.

I think there's a version of it you can extract from Homeworld using the music extractor thingummy... not sure where that is to be found though.

Sorry if I'm wrong but are downloads not illegal if you just listen to them once, not sell them, as is coppyright laws, or are you talking about programs. Plus I mean by any legal matters.

There's www.buymusic.com I suppose.

I'd like to point out that "Angus Dei" would kind of be closer to "The Beef of God" and I assume you mean "Agnus Dei." :)

Actually, that's more like "The Scotsman of God."

It's played with the bagpipes, see...

Okay.

Searching for "Agnus Dei" will get you dozens of Catholic masses, as it refers a part of mass called "Lamb of God."

What you want is "Adagio for Strings" by the composer Samuel Barber. The Homeworld version is a choral version of Adagio for Strings using the words from Agnus Dei.

There ya go, all explained.

(p.s. the iTunes Music Store has some good versions of the piece)

A question about the copyright of that:
Is'nt copyright limited to a number of years?
Should not that song be old enough for that, I mean the original Agnus Dei...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Agnus Dei was written some time before copyright laws were rewritten by the RIAA to extend the copyright period more or less indefinitely.

Adagio for Strings is probably copyright, but hey, information wants to be free. This whole idea of people owning ideas is retarded anyway.

Yes, but specific recordings are not.

Copyright expiry means you can record your own version without paying royalties to the original author, his designates, or his estate, or swipe bits and pieces from it.

However, that doesn't give you the right to download, for example, the latest version of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing the piece for free - I'd guess that's not public domain and is therefore stealing.

I've often wondered, back a few years ago when rap stars were routinely swiping soundbites from other artists, if that was actually breaking the law - or for that matter, if Weird Al Yankovic could have been tagged for all of the stuff he modified...

so where would one get the *homeworld* version of adagio for strings? all other versions i know just don't cut it. didn't some fan site have the HW version hosted or something? I know the guidestone had cata music, but what about HW music?

Silmaril

Weird Al got permission from the record labels for all the stuff he did. I remember Coolio wasn't happy, but the record company had given Weird Al the go-ahead to use his track.

You can find the homeworld one on CD. clicky (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000003G8N/202-6281597-5296605) has the choral version on it, but I'm not sure if its the exact right one. I know a friend has it, I'll try and track it down.

Where's Relicnewsians to enlighten us?

Somewhere on RelicNews they've posted the MP3 of Agnus Dei, as well as all the other original HW music... but search turned up nuttin'.

looking for this (http://sollozzo.f2o.org/agnus%20dei.wma)?

found it with my backups in the original AIFR format, its now in 192 kbps WMA

Can't you post songs in a decent, non-evil format, like ogg? Even mp3 is better than wma...

Dimension

is there a wma- wav or wma- mp3 converter out there? :(

Bnonn

It wouldn't be worth it. All you'd do is create artifacts in the track. I'll see if I can't find a better version. That "192 kbps" WMA sounds like it was ripped from a 64 kbps sound file anyway.

It seems that the music in Homeworld itself is of a very low bitrate. I don't suppose there's any chance that anyone at Relic could provide an original, uncompressed copy?

Nice, bug. Thanks.

IIRC - RelicNews has an account on 3DDownloads where all the music from Homeworld is kept as MP3.

et voila. (http://www.3ddownloads.com/relicnews/mp3)
Agnus Dei being 'Main Theme'

if this it's fine to get a copy (enlighten us, RelicNews Staff), go ahead and download it.
if not, this post may misteriously disappear, and 'banned' will appear under my name. lets hope not.

Krogoth - Uber posted it eariler, so I'm thinking it's ok.

Tried to find the site myself, but it's well hidden.

to Bnonn and all others complaining about format/bitrate:

he wanted the song in WMA, so I gave it to him in WMA
as for quality, it was converted to wave from the source file (decompressed from Homeworld sometime in 2000). It was converted to WMA from wave. Any problems in quality are due to the original file, or either of the coverters I used (Winamp2 disk-writer from AIFR to WAV, dbpoweramp from WAV to WMA). I made it 192 because I had no idea what the original sound quality was, since the original was a 176 kbps AIFR, which means nothing to me. For some reason I think AIF is uncompressed in the first place. Whatever.

oh, and Dimension, dbpoweramp could covert a wma to a mp3, or vice versa, and some other formats, if you wanted to (I know this doesnt apply to the current situation)

Actually he just said he wanted to play it in WMP. That's different than being in WMA.

The RN music stash is almost worthless. Maybe it's just me, but waiting behind 350 people for hours is not worth a 6 minute soundtrack.

you need to get on at the right time, i was only queue 80. besides, you'll notice that many people (such as you apparently ;)) drop out of queue because they think it'll be too long.

besides, just queue up all songs , this way you'll get to download all files you wanted without having to reenter queue all the time (which of course lead me to having 49 internet explorer windows open, but it was ok, until i screwed up their order ;()

If you want to buy this its on the platoon sound track CD, hell, go buy the film as well.
Its got more impact in the film than it has in the computer game.

Dimension
12th Jan 04, 6:19 AM
beg to differ, but the platoon version is quite different, as it features violins instead of choral singing. very different style imo. i find homeworld's version is superior.

Silmaril
12th Jan 04, 6:31 AM
Platoon's version is, I believe, how the piece was originaly arranged, as it is called called Adagio for Strings.....

Don't forget William Orbit's kickass trance remix of Adagio for Strings. God I love that tune. :)

I wouldnt recomend actually buying any Samual Barber collections as the rest of his stuff is..... uninspiring at best.

Woh; I never expected such a small topic to get so many responses, even if they're not on topic. But hey, thanks. I'm still not sure if copyright laws abide?

Isn't Angus Dei the theme song? (Question of Origin). If not, then where can I find that song?
