hey, ive googled answers, run installer packages, even downloaded and installed the latest copy of DirectX

in CFhodED i keep getting the error

Error while initializing DirectX:
Error creatind D3D device.

Extended error information:
Automation Error

what does this mean and how do i fix it?

I seem to remember that that error means that you're missing the file dx8vb.dll

Download it off google and then use the command "regsvr32 dx8vb.dll" in a command window in the folder you saved the file in.

Try downloading and installing the latest VB runtimes from Microsoft if you haven't already.

Aye, MS site should give them to you. Might have to wander into the MSDN site, but it'll still be MS.

Hello, I have a problem running the CFHodEd - when I try to run it it tells me that "comdlg.32.ocx is invalid or mising :(

don't they include all the older ones?

I was under the impression (could be wrong) that each one was larger than the last because it includes old versions, no?

Well that directx 8 file I posted about above isn't included in newer versions like Vista and Windows 7. There are probably others left out too.

Never ever think of trying to find a logic in M$'s way to do things.

Let's just say that COM is kinda obsolete (?) and maybe they believe that it's no longer used...

Which graphic card do you have? There might be some compatibility issue but it's hard to say as of now.

BTW, neither you were missing D3D8VB dll nor the VB runtimes.
If D3DVB8 dll was missing, the program would terminate with other error ("ActiveX can't create object", or something like that).
If VB runtimes were missing, the program woudn't run at all ("ComDlg32.ocx is invalid or missing", or something like that).
