just started imperial guard

hi i finally decided to give tabletop another shot after 2 failed attempts and $400 down the drain, but i sorta need help now. I got an imperial guard battleforce but im not quite sure what weapons to use on em as ive no codex or how to go about building an legal tt army. Also i got some pig iron head sprues for my guardsmen but they came with a warning sticker that says contains lead anyone know how i can go about handling them?

Back in the old days the GW minis used to contain lead, but not any more. Just dont go sticking them in your mouth would be my only advice. A part from that I dont think there is any worry about handling them at all.

I suggest getting the new IG codex for the latest rules for them as well as a 5th ed rule book if you dont already have one.

Yeah, just follow normal "sane" procedures for hobby work; wash your hands thoroughly after contact with leaden metals/chemicals/etc.

May I ask what happened in previous attempts to get into the hobby?

well my first attempt back in 1999 i was 9 years old got the dark eldar/space marine starter set plus a sm battleforce for $200 plus paint and all the other crap they add on was like $250. i couldnt paint them so they all ended up butchered. I liked the dark eldar so tried again in 2006 again, bought a de starter set for plus a hero for $100 painting went smoother but still crappy. I tried to strip plastic minis and they either melted or broke. So now im gonna try again with ig battleforce Got it for $75 off amazon so imma take my time with it lol. If anyone can give me a hand with what weapons are the best for like point cost and range and what not it would be greatly appreciated

All I can say is Mea Codex, Mea Codex, Mea Maxima Codex.

You need to get a codex. While you're waiting for your codex, feel free to search Strat for any of a bazillion IG threads. Plenty of fodder to read through, some from yours truly, plenty more from others. The majority of your lads will have lasguns, that is just the way it is. The heavy & special weapons all depend on what you want the force to do. Flamer templates are brilliant in 5th ed, but you still need meltas & such for tanks/heavy infantry.

Get a codex. Search the strat forums. Plan.

Don't worry about the paint job. I have played all over and have seen more then a few "Green Army Men" style IG armies. To be honest you could call my IG Black army men because I have never gone beyond the primer with them... My Orks too.

Have fun with the game, check out the strat section. I would even go down to the local Game shop and watch a few games.
