View Full Version : About the Customization

First I would like to start things off by saying hello to everyone. My question is in regards to when the Unit Customization Program might be released. I was just wondering if it was going to be released before the final release of the game or before hand? Perhaps even before the Demo as a little Teaser Treat to further increase the salivation in all our mouths? Perhaps a Partial Customization tool?

I appreciate an information given about this subject and continue to look forward to the final release of the game. I have already Pre-Ordered and Fully Payed for it hehehe, it gunna be just that good.

Thank You and God Bless

We don't have any good information on release dates yet.

Relic has a good record of providing good demos for their games, I see no reason DoW would be any different.

you mean the army colour editor for multiplayer?

No, BaronVonSnakPa, I'd assume he means the actual mod tools - map editors and the like. There won't be a separate color editor, if previous Relic games are anything to go on.

i know that because i know what dow's color editor looks like, but i wasnt sure if he was asking about the editor or modding tools.

if you remember, the original HW had a program where you loaded a taii scout into view (don't remember if there were additional units), and could then customize the colors, and i think even zoom in and out some.

a proggy like that would certainly be a cool bonus =)

Something like what Dimension was saying. Since the said that the units would be able to be customized a certain way i.e. color, badages, banners, and the like I was wondering if Relic was going to release a Program Preceding the Final Game maybe with teh Demo or as a little treat, so that we would a little taste of would we would be able to do whe nthe final game comes out. Like maybe we could "paint" the SM or Orks or something to show us what we will be able to do with the other Factions once teh Final Release comes out.

I agree with you Dimension, specially since we have 4 colors, badges/banners now to play with :D Would be great to be all set and good to go when the game rolls around. Bwahahahaha :D

*small hopeful plea to Relic for that, but, also remaining realistic that they're working on the game and simply may not have time to code that up, no matter how miniscule it is* :)

oh ho, trust me, you have WAAAAY more than 4 colors to work with and plenty of customization when it comes to banners, adges, and shoulder pad decals.

the customization system they have is very solid looking and will please everyone.

Baron, I meant 4 different colors we can change on the outfits :) I know we have WAY more than 4 colors themselves, but I meant instead of 2 (main/stripe) we have 4 (main/?/?/?) to mess with :)

Homeworld Unit Viewer owns you.

I'm thinking that it shouldn't be too hard for somebody knowledgable in programming and 3D models to hack the program and adapt it for DoW models.

The stuff i saw first hand at E3 was pretty cool with the customizing. The guy at the "Gaming For Windows" booth (Thanks whoever you are) gave me a quick look at the customizing stuff and showed me the level of detail which showed pretty much everything down to the eye color as customizeable. I'm pretty happy with the amount you could customize and I'm sure I'll have plenty of custom armies :bandit:

Eye color? You mean you can even customize what color the mask/visor eyelets are for your races? Wow :D Sweet!

Well I must be missing it then, and if no one minds repeating, besides main color and eye color, and I'm assuming "trim/stripe" color, what else can we modify color-wise? I already have my banner symbol and craftworld symbol done, just have to tweak it from HW1&2 a bit :D

I hope that there is some possibility to set which areas are set for each colour, and that different units could take different colours (e.g. inversions for exarchs, sergeants, or even devastators from tac marines).

That would be really cool. If it's possible to change the colour completly from unit to unit, I could get my Deathwing Terminators in a Dark Angels MP Game.

That would really rock :!: :!: :!:

Don't matter much for me as long as I can have pink marines :cowboy:

Me to. I want red helemts fro my tactical marines, blue helmets for my devestators and yellow helmets for my assault marines. Plus my sargeants should have black shoulder pads with read trim.

so far the coloorts you can change i have seen / heard of are....

shoulder trimming, shoulder colour, head , eyepeices, rest of body/ legs, crest on chest.

Banner trimming, banner image, chaper image

personaly i will have the 4thco. blood angels and have a bronze skull on my banner for every victory, a silver for every ten, a gold for every 100.

When I was being shown the customization the head was not an individual option to change the color on. The basic things that were from what i can remember was thus : Primary body color, shoulder pad color, trim, weapon color, crest and eyes. I think that's a lot of customization! Of course there will be programs out there I hope that will allow you to do things like color different areas. Maybe have the marine have black and half white =)

The customization was very basic yet detailed enough to enjoy

I have GOT to be able to customize enough to make them look like Space Wolves. I can't wait for the first expansion with more units and chapters. The tyranids need to be included.

extracts from IGN interview (http://pc.ign.com/articles/498/498701p4.html)
Jay Wilson: [...]And yes, players do have an option to create their own color scheme, badges, and war banners. It works similarly to Homeworld 2, where players choose a primary and secondary color, except we have four different colors you can change. Players can select badges (special iconography that appears on units) from those we have available, or they can create their own outside of the game and import them in. They can do the same with war banners, which are similar to badges but only appear on banners held by units and structures.

I think that for really strong visual customisation, i'll have to Mod...
and IMHO that's normal...
the visual customisation tool could not be a hyper complicated tool covering all the different units/ parts / underparts, etc... it's just a sub feature.
and you can already do a lot.
or let's wait 2 month in addition before release.... :noway:

I can't wait for the first expansion with more units and chapters.
if ever one's released...

WH40k:DOW unit painter XP.

Thats would be nice. And out of game unit colour picker, with zoom, unit switch and other options... then export to the saved in game colour schemes.

For a second, more complicated program, a full skin editor would be nice. Using the tools for IC or similar, load up a unit, and have a 3d and 2d view of its skin files. Using simple brushes or import/export option a player could hand paint the models.

Then import them back into the game. This could be easily (hopefully) done for a moded game. But not likely for a MP game, as Relic would have to add a option for this in MP and sending the textures could take a long time.

I dont think you are going able to customizate colours for EACH unit. So you will have to choose ONLY one of your options.

Hey! This is a Video game which is a program that requires lots of work to do not a genie in a lamp that can make your wishes come true.

YOU DONT!
PLEASE many of you players are having a childish beahaviour: I want..., I want..., I want... BUAAAAA! I want ....
While I can understand your feelings about your fauvorite WH 40K armies It seems you dont realise this is a videogame, that IS a COMERCIAL program whom finality is being sold. Programmers and other developers have to work in order to finish it at date and thats lots of work! You should be grateful you have for the FIRST time your always dreamed WH 40K RTS (at least for me : THANKS RELIC!) videogame and that looks great! You should be grateful at least you can play marines, eldar, orks and chaos (and thats a lot for a videogame) and that you can the ability to customize your colours is enough complete.

Also about expansions: For godness sake DOW has not been realised yet and you are crying for expansions! And just in case there was and expansion it only would be able to realase two new armies and perhaps one or two new units for each existing army. As it is logical these new armies should be the most voted for players (IG and Nids) and they should not be any kind of subfaction for an existing army (and that means no chapters, there is no need of them). So... you dont have your Space Wolves? Hey I dont have my Blood Angels too! but I will play with the Blood ravens and they will be fine for me. Whats the matter? you have vanilla marines (standard marine army) painted in red! But keep in mind you can customizate their colours : Pink marines anyone? LOL

Only thing I would miss would be the option to use more than one 'main colour'... Like one space marine chapters like the Howling Griffons or the Storm Lords (I think they are called..) and my own Emperor's Templars (They are white and dark blue painted in sort of a checkered fashion.. you can see an example here, though its a dreadnought, it is the same basic idea with marines: http://www.geocities.com/emperorstemplars/gallery.html )

Edit: Oh and of course I don't mean to whine ;) just airing my thoughts really...

Thank you SO MUCH! for making this game Relic!! You guys RULE! :buddies:

I gotta say a couple of things about this skin thing... Things I'd love to see...

I know it might not seem interesting to all of you... but I would love the ability to say whether I want a dull colour on my armor, or if I want it a gleaming metallic colour. There should be a slider in the colour selection that allows you to say how metallic you want that colour to be. Do you want it mat yellow, or do you want that to be gleaming gold on those shoulder stripes?

I'd love to have the one in game as a "simple" editor, and have maybe as a secondary release or more of a public release, a tool that allows you to further detail into the skin files... like it can allow you to dictate if you want to change the helmet colours for your units so you can pick them out on the field. Or if you don't want to do the entire helmet, you can just do the crest on top of the helmet, leaning more towards a Roman style look if you want... or you can do the Horns... speaking of which, are there going to be multiple different models for infantry? Or will Chaos marines all look like the same guy like Space Marines? I'd love to have a little more detailed skin editor, so you could do more with your Chaos marines... like if you wanted to, you could go for the Iron Warriors look, and nail the faceplates into the old Mk 3 Crusade style armor, with the knight style faceplates...

Another cool idea would be if you could also custom pattern the colours on your army's guns, so they're not all going to be the same black and silver colours even if you change your entire units... it'd be kind of cool to see somebody deck out a Chaos army like the Iron Warriors, with the black/yellow diagonal banding on weapons, the gleaming gunmetal armor, the heavy set postures, the loads of heavy weapons...

Well, just throwing in my $0.02 so here ya go, have my opinion, no charge, no refunds, keep the change.
