View Full Version : Why did you join the Relic Boards?

No Surrender
8th Jun 04, 5:14 AM
I've been meaning to ask this for a while now but I always seem to forget. So... which game did you join the RN boards for?

Thaum
8th Jun 04, 5:21 AM
Good question..... It seems so long ago now, but I seem to remember joining to report the bug on the 4th level of HW 1, where you could not produce any more ships if you captured any more than 11 ships or something like that.

I think that Relic were aware of it and had already released a patch by the time I joined.

And now 4.5 years later I am still here. Many of the handles have changed, but there are still some of the originals about. (or the greys as I like to call them).

All in all this is a pretty cool BB with a nice selection of good decent people and ideas. Hence the reason I keep coming back.

I needed technical support back in 99.
Überjumper and some others helped me soo well I hung around for a little while.

Then it faded. The release of Cata did not really motivate me to get back.
The release of HW2 did. Soo much as my nick is what I felt, HOME Again!

Since then my primary goal is being a decent community member.

I stay, because once you get to learn a few ppl, You realize You dont need any other Forum for the games you love.

I think I posted after learning that HW2 was being made. Not that it really mattered, since my computer was and still is nothing more than elaborate stone knives and bearskins. Still, I liked the feel of the community, and stuck around.

Well I joined after getting the HW1 GotY edtion on discount. At that time I found out that HW2 was being made so I stuck around. And then I heard abt DoW, which is why I'm still here. But most importantly I'm here because this is one of the best communities I've ever seen.

Bug report and suggestions after playing the HW demo, and then I disappeared. I continued to check RN now and then, and then one day I saw "In defense of stupidity..." on the front page under "recent threads." It turned out to be a continuation of a science vs. religion thread that had been locked, and as this is a topic I've meditated upon since late grade school, I was sucked in. I liked it so much they let me work here!

I joined a short time before the relase of HW2 Demo. After finding out that EVE was apay-per-play game, I focused my attention to the other highly promising RTS: HW2. Because I needed so much information about Storyline, Stratefy and tactics, tips and tricks, I decided to register here. At first, I posted really really crappy posts, mainly because This was my real massive first interaction to other ppl over the internet, and I thought that this place is like your average backyard. Well, I was wrong (Duh!). After I realized that this place is more like a school or an office, than the backyard, I started to behave accordingly.

What I would like to say is:

Thanks to all of you, for your sheer critisism, objective views, patience, and the so much needed help. Without you all, I would have still remained that forum-troll+n00b whom I was at the beginning. You opened my eyes to the world of online communities. Cheers!

I checked RB, the Guidestone and some other fansites briefly back in 2000 after reading the Annual PCGamer Awards and seeing this "Homeworld" mentioned quite a few times. I never found a copy of the game where I was living at the time, invoking a mighty "Meh" from me. Not having the game, I didn't bother.
Fast forward a few years, (I have a copy by now) and I read an article that HW2 had been cancelled, I didn't even know it was being made, second "Meh" invoked.
Some time later, I come accross Arioch's HW Shipyards, where I read HW2 is on track, I check a few days later, and some ÜberJumper guy has 6 screenshots, I know I've heard the name before, one google search and here I am. I registered a couple of months later.

I joined to argue in one of the evolution vs creationism threads. I think I might have come here looking for a way to rip the HW music... but yeah, it was the intelligent, rational, reasoned debate that made me stay.

I was looking for a solution to the problem of alt+tabbing out of the HW1 demo. I came here to look, couldn't find anyone posting about it, and promptly found a fix, then wrote a post about how to sort it out.

I ended up posting so much helping people fix problems in the demo and HW, that I ended up being responsible for organizing the HW Bug forums. Just kinda carried it on since then.

i grew interested in HW after reading part of a walk through, with some awesome screenies. not wanting to have the game spoiled to me, i stopped reading from mission 5 on. there was a URL at the back, which took me to these forums, on which i lurked 1-2 months before registering as "Mantis" in late november 99. then i ordered an english copy of HW for a fortune via the internet. stopped posting and playing HW in the middle of 2000 due to me spending more time with friends and girlfriend. started playing HW again in spring 01, but only participated on my clan's forums and sometimes lurked the strat fora.

i think i even signed briefly back up some time in 2001, but then the fora were purged and i stopped going there again for some time.

signed back up in 2003 more or less out of boredom.

I bought Homeworld back in 2000 (the Game of the Year Edition when it first came out), and I absolutely loved the story behind, so I would surf the internet looking for fanfic. I came across several sites, but I think this was one of the last I found (I first came here in late in 2001, signed up, but never posted. I came back in the summer of 2002, but didn't sign up till that fall). Relicforums was probably my first experience with forums, since it was certainly the first one I signed up for. I've been lazy as of late, and haven't posted any fiction in the officer's lounge. I should have something big ready for the summer though.

I don't think I'll be leaving this place though, for a long time yet.

I got here because of Cataclysm (although that might be kinda innacurate; I had had Cata for a long time, but I got my first internet connection much later so I started checking out sites for info about my favourite games), spent the first month lurking arround and reading some threads. Later the urge to participate became very strong so I started posting...

I intend to stay here to the end... mine or this forum's ;D

Hmmm,

I finally joined after HW2 was released. I had been lurking for 3 years, and posted as guest a few times. HW2 got me to asking questions about advanced HW1 salavging. Then the HE2 PDS mod, then GD, and well there have been some interesting responses. Nice to see others view points and begin to understand where your own view points are sourceed from. In other pwrds there is a large scale value here (for the most part) , something other forums fail to offer by being 1) too small or 2) full of jerks.

My brother introduced me to HW1 back in 1999. One day I got on HW1 mp and meet Uber in a online game on won, he was testing out a new map, (man that was so long ago, remember that Uber?) I decided to join cause it seem that this forum would be "Interesting", boy was I right. My Vote is HW1!

Back in 1999 I read a review about Homeworld and started looking around for information about it. I stumbled onto this forum but I couldn't find a lot except some stories on the fiction forum which were pretty good. I then forgot a little about these forums until the game came out when I started lurking at the fiction forums again where I came back every week reading the newest installments of the story written by Xellos. I really didn't have something to say myself so I didn't really join until more than a year later.

I loved the story by Xellos(hem wasn't called xellos a the time btw.) but there was another campaign story written by some guy named quietman which was really good. He stopped writting though after the gardens and his story has been lost which is pretty sad :-(

I don't remember. But it had something to do with the fact that I played a lot of HW1 in late '99 and early 2001.

I came back in 2002 because I was bored at the time.

Wasn't that an interesting story!?

None of the above ...

I came here for the writing. Don't get me wrong, I did play HW 1 and I also played Impossible Creatures. But they had nothing to do with why I am here.

Which would explain why I only post in GD or the lounge. (Maybe once in the arty place, but I think that's only once)

Bnonn and Vijil are the people that I heard about it from, so they are the reason you are cursed with my ramblings in GD and why you are fotunate enough to read my work in the lounge :D (Yes that is me pimping my writing.)

My second post (I did it the right way, newbe forum first.) was my first post on a forum. Before that I ahd never been able to get online. (Don't get me wrong, I've been around PCs since I could open my eyes) I just never had a modem or access to the online world. Really sad if you think about it, it's hard to be into computers when everyone else gets their news befroe you do because they get it online. Anyway, my second post was whole bunch of rubbish about my *views* on blackholes. It was stupid and childish, and I took offence when people told me so.

Aahh the days of my online youth. Now, I hardly start a thread of my own. ('sept in the lounge) I only post in some threads and I follow milly around when there is a political thread so that I can lighten his day.

I assume that you mean vanished? Fluorished would mean that it grew well/luxuriantly thrived or prospered or somesuch. And if it did this without you knowing then I'd say there was a problem.

Your accounts disappearing could be for a number of things. The boards could have been purged, you could have been banned ...

I joined for Homeworld1. I got it somewhat late, after Cata had been released for many months. Cata was a hoot, so I decided to check out the orginal, and I proceeded to spend a year of my life playing skirmish/campain as I had no internet. I signed up about when I got internet to try to help learn multiplayer, although I rarely actually was checking the strategy forums.

I joined for Homeworld 1......and because I wanted to write fiction stories.

God came to me one night and said to me, "Child, go forth to the Relic boards and sign thine self up. Though I could have just been high at the time, who knows.

Homeworld 1. It was a long time ago, but I think I got a disk with a demo of it from a friend from one of those magazines. The training mission hooked me. I think my first ever experience with these boards came right near the end of when they were still on the Relic website, which is probably why I found them.

Several accounts later, due to forum wipes and idle member deletions, and here I am!

Of course I said Homewrold, but it was a college buddy of mine, Tekron, that showed me this site back in the UBB days. Most of you don't know who he is (If you joined in 2002 or later), left the forums a couple of years ago.... unless he's lurking around somewhere under a different name....

EDIT: Dear sweet zombie jebus.... I responded to this thread not realizing how old it was..... five month bump.... I remeber a while ago one of those "How'd you get your screenname" threads lasting close to a year and a half.

The only people with posting levels anything like Tekron's are Retro and Jumper, and I'm fairly sure neither of them are him.

I came with DoW. Riding on the bit of tape that holds the box closed.

I finally desided to joined the forums because I liked all of relics games and thought DoW looked promising.

Hard question. I had an account for HW1. Got deleted. Then an account for HW2. Got deleted. Now account for DoW. What does that count as? :)

Wow... no-one joined for IC at all? It wasn't THAT bad...

Anyway, I joined in order to bring sanity and rational discussion to the DoW forums. It hasn't worked yet.

I got HW, played it, loved it, and looked around on the web for HW-related websites. I found RelicNews in 2000/2001, read most of the articles therein (anyone remember "Premature Ejumpulaunch"?) and eventually began reading the forums, altho I only joined the fray in 2001.

I'm glad to be here.

6 months I believe, but if Dyn spots oldies' names he usually spares them. All you have to do is login and you're active.

I remember way back when, I got a magazine because of a mailing error, and on the front it had a really cool shot of homeworld. I remember finding it absolutely facinating, so I scoured the internet for more, and found the forums. I didn't join 'till way later, but that magazine article is the reason I am now spending more money than is sane on Warhammer 40K models... hmm, intersting how that turned out...

I joined these forums in mid 99, like july or so, but my date dosent reflect it because a lot of the people claiming old school dates pre 01 are edited anyway, to what they claim was their dates before forum crashed and i never cared enough to cry about it. but anyway i've been around since beta 1 of hw april-may 99. so I was originally here for hw beta 1 & 2 (i still have the hw beta cd infact.. )

I was linked to the forum by athexx or madhatter.

and where the hell is the love for cataclysm. just because I absolutely own everyone at it, is no reason to not put it as an option.

what now bitches.

I found Homeworld on some list on Amazon, got it, liked it, and bought Cata. Cata hated my computer, so I logged on to the forums to find out how to make it work. Thanks to everyone in teh troubleshooting forums as it now works fine.

After playing homeworld 1, went to relic.com, saw a UBB forum. It eventually turned into the Relicnews that we all know today.
