View Full Version : Guardsmen of the Emperor Unite!!
Just as a matter of interest I am wondering what sort of backgrounds people are using for their guardsmen at the moment, and also what doctrines you are using to support this background.
Currently mine are droptroop Hvy Inf. the 47th Tanisian. Strike troops, more akin to marines than a regular guard army.
also I am about to start modelling and converting some Adeptus Custodes up as an aside to play a part in an upcoming campaign I am organinsing.
Ps: fingers crossed for some sort of inclusion of Imp Guard in teh game at some future point!!!

my imperial guard cadians are of the 513th defensive company they tend to get a lot of orks running at them so they have the xenos fighters: orks upgrade now :)
im considering changing them to be traitor guard so :p
Welcom to the forums Silk my Ig's are the Helgast not nicked from Killzone they have been for about 3 years now. They are a Regiment of Drop troops who come from a planet that is situated next to a Forge World who specilise in Makeing Valkyries so there normal troops are taken in with Valkyries that are there chimeras there specialist troops are shoted in to the fight.

Hmm... Well the short SHORT version. The Kadeshi 179th Company [yes there are a few inspirations from Homeworld. The name is the only Kadesh reference, There is a loose Hiigaran inspiration to the background {no they arent searching for their homeworld or sajuuk, that'd be silly} but the whole thing is 7 pages and I dont wanna paste it].
Edit: Loosely an event happened around M39 that made all Kadeshi believe that the emperor had become disgusted with them, so they had fallen from grace. In an effort to win the favor of the Emperor, they reformed their civilization and devoted a huge effort to a military force. Unfortunately an incident shortly after launching this force pit the Kadeshi Redemption Fleet against a Loyal Imperial Navy fleet [mainly a miscommunication]. Given the state of Kadeshi politics [and dogma] at the time, this led the Kadeshi Fleet Commander to believe that the Emperor was still testing the resolve of the Kadeshi. As he was the God Saviour of Mankind, he would protect those truely loyal to them, were the Kadeshi to adopt a shoot first, ask questions later policy. And since the Kadeshi have shot first, and never asked questions. If the enemy fell, they obviously were not the true servants of the Emperor, because the Emperor Protects.
Doctrines: None. That's not to say the army is entirely bland, it's just that none of the doctrines really fit. Style wise, expect to see the army operate in two entirely seperate parts. A VERY mobile element, designed advance and clear out any enemy [to this end there are some 16-23 flame based weapons in the mobile element depending on which army list I use [14-20 flamers, 1-3 Heavy Flamers, and 0-2 Inferno Cannons]. Operating completely seperately there is the "sit back and breach the wall" element, generally consisting of a LOT of Heavy Weapons and two Leman Russ Battle Tanks [occasionally supported with a Leman Russ Demolisher or Leman Russ Vanquisher].
Really I've never seen anyone use their guard quite like I do, so it makes the army quite unique without having to devote to either unfluffy or underpowered doctrines.

204th Inquisitorial Regiment.
No Doctrines.
The 204th has a long history leading back to it's commandeering by the Inquisition in the age of the apothesy. Now the 204th is on call for many of the Inquisition's shadowy assignments and frequently fight along side the secretive Grey Knights.

Mine is the Nomula Wolves. They originate form a rocky planet called Nomula Secundus. Their history in brief:
There was along civil war on Nomula Primus, the great forge world. The king died without a heir, and the two big factions on the planet - the two biggest noble houses on the two main continents of the planet - begun a war, which lasted almost 40 years.
Then Warmaster Anterus arrived, and thanks to the Officio Munitorium, he intervened. He gave the throne to one of the noble houses, and helped the symphatizers of the other noble house to move to Nomula Secundus.
40 years of constant urban war created a perfect cityfight army.
Anterus recruited several nomulan regiments for the attack and purgation of Prospero. The nomula regiments was so fine urban warriors that they were transferred to several fronts.
Then the nomulan solar system was attacked by a force of Astral Claws renegade space marines. The nomula regiments in the close vicinity were transferred back, along with a small company of Space Wolves. They fought side by side, and thats where the name 'Nomulan Wolves' came from. A special unit led by Major Rakowski did so great thing in the counter-attack that even the mighty Space Wolf runepriest was impressed. During the sieges the Space Wolves taught a lot of things to Rikowski and his men - later they became an elite unit, one of the best amongst the Imperial Guard.
The doctrines depend on the mission we play.
If it is a normal or unknown mission (like competitions) then the
Infantry companies are used:
sharpshooters, grenadiers, drop troops, iron discipline, close order drill
When there is a need for mobility, then the motorized infantry is used:
mechanised, grenadiers, iron discipline, hardened fighters, enginseers
When I want to have some fun with an elite infantry based army, then I use the 101 special unit:
stormtroopers, drop troops, sharpshooters, heavy platoons, light infantry
And finally when I want GREAT fun, I use the training company:
conscripts, close order drill, spec weap teams, iron discipline, drop troops
Paint scheme is a dark grey with black and light gray camo stripes.

Pohjin 54th Mechanised Grenadier Guards, the "Strikers"
Doctrines: Mechanised, Grenadiers, Iron Discipline, Allow Stormstroopers, Allow Special Weapon Squads (Snipers are a must in any IG army I believe)
Based very loosely on the mechanised units of the wehremacht circa 1939-40.
So each trooper is given dusty grey trousers, a 'feldgrun' (field green, a green khaki colour) flak jacket. Officers are in dress grey. Stormtroopers in the 'Zeltbahn' style cameoflague. The majority of special weapons used are flamers and grenade launchers and I try to utilise the missile launchers as much as possible. Yet I will use fire-support teams with heavy bolters and autocannons and antitank teams including lascannons if its deemed that I'll be playing the defender in a mission. Then I typical, drop the Mechanised doctrine and take sharpshooters instead. The premise being, these are the troopers utilised to defend areas, whereas the mechanised troops would have already moved away.
Each Chimera is used in a way similar to the "Warrior IFV" of the British Army. Its for infantry support, so typically uses the multi-laser turret and heavy flamer hull-mount. I would like to use autocannon turrets, I can see the models available from ForgeWorld yet can't find any rules anywhere that support them. Painted in dark greys, well will be, most are sitting there a certain shade of grey... plastic grey but still I've got loads of infantry painted.
The background is still incomplete as of yet. I'm still writing it to be honest.

I am feilding the Aldarrin 1rst. They started out as a PDF force with nothing but a handful of models at the gamestore I was working at for a summer campaign on the planet Adarris Prime. They eventually grew into a full fledged army, and now that I've moved to another state, they are currently on a crusade as the army goes to local tournaments.
The Aldarrin first uses no doctrines. Their homeworld has an orbiting forgemoon that supplied them and now travel the galaxy stowed away in my battlefleet. The 1rst is divided into the main infantry company and the armoured company. The armoured company is spearheaded by two Leman Russ Vanquishers (Idomitable Will, Emporers Fury) along with a Demolisher, a battery of Basilisks, Armoured Fist units, and backboned by a Shadowsword (Bringer of Tears). The main infantry consists of 3 platoons, with assorted support troops. Colonel Thorne leads the army as a converted Usukar creed or a converted kasrkin sgt if he wants to get into the thick of things. The force alo has a hefty presence of Adeptus Mechanicus with units of skitarri (2 guard veteran squads) and a band of servitors. There is also an Inquisitional presence as two of my most common opponents play mostly Black Legion, their current nemisis.

Cadian 222nd gunners, Doctrines: Fire Control (sharpshooters); Inquisitorial Will (Iron Discipline); Shock Troopers (Storm troopers)
A regiment generally found fighting the forces of chaos, led by inquisitor Marleheim (Heroic senior officer usually), heading for the recently captured worlds to try to create some unrest
Thanks guys for the input. I am currently writing a background for my army that is open-ended, due to the fact that every battle i fight adds something on lol. I would love to type it here, but i have work soon so ill have to leave it for another day.

uzgah just wondering, how many storm trooper/kasrkin squads do u use?
Well gee in normal games I typically take at least one unit of Grenadiers (just to 'fluff' out the list as it were). In bigger games I take... as many as I have which, at the moment is only 4. Usually 2 as greandiers and the other two as Stormtroopers allowing them to use the inflitrate/deep strike options should I want too.
However, primarily I rely on good ol' ground pounder infantry platoons for my troops. Simply because I have never found Stormtrooper or their Grenadier counterparts to be that effective. Most people treat them as Marines and nuke 'em in turn 1. Well they aren't Marines by a long shot but I love the Kasrkin models, hence, the reason I use the grenadier doctrine because I want to include a large number of them.
Ultimately, this does detract from the wehremacht mechanised units basis but like I said its VERY loosely based on that organisation. I have taken the colour schemes from the wehremacht and ditched the rest to be completely honest.
