they have there good things and bad things. the imperial guard are typically your sit back and fire army. they have access to lots of infantry making it semi expensive to colect compared to a space marine force. ive come to enjoy playing with the guard because it is definitely a challenge. the basic guardsmen is probably the worst troop available in the game but what he has is many of his fellow brothers fighting side by side. most of the time youll be outnumbering your opponents and if you dont, your in trouble. the IG have access to probably the best tanks in the game...the Leman Russ (gotta have one of these in your army) and its many variants. the biggest disadvantage is in the close combat field where you definitely do not want to go into. if you like a challenge and dont mind losing then the IG are good choice

Allow me to summerize: Infantry armed with flashlights (lasguns) that couldn't kill a rat, tanks with barrels so big you could fit a marine in there, power armour and all.

Pretty accurate though. In the new edition they pack a fairly lethal assault element too. DON'T believe the 'flashlights' comment though, they are surprisingly capable.

Never say anything bad about flashlights. While they don't have an AP value, and the S3 isn't much to write home to mom about. The sheer number of rapid firing flashlights you can sling at your enemy causes them to roll lots of dice anyway at their Armor Save. Even Space Marines have to get unlucky and let a few through, Terminators included. My best memory of the flashlight power, was dropping a squad of 8 terminators in one shooting phase, without the use of tanks. :smash: Tank forces are also fun to use. As I have a line of models (like 140 IG men, and 12 tanks) It's definately one of the most expensive armies to collect, and I cherish them everyday. They are also the hardest to use, the least common, and my personal favorite, can outshoot a Tau better than anyone else!!!

Imperial Guard in brief:
Lots of meat shields for the big tank guns. Try to be good at guessing ranges, if you can guess within 2" at all times, like one of my friends, you'll be a monster with the Basilisk.

Oh, dear...
This is why I stopped reading the GW boards.
No offence to you Space Chicken, but first I'd advise you to take a look at the website (www.games-workshop.com) then post on their own dedicated boards, (http://uk.games-workshop.com/community/messages.htm) or alternatively search for somebody else who has asked the same question (and trust me, there'll probably be a lot). Then, if you're still interested, take a trip to a GW store, grab the rulebook and take a look through the codex.
Primarily, this is a gaming website, and though there is a forum for the TT/fluff, I beleive you'd find more help on the GW site itself.
Btw, welcome to the hobby :D

the imperial guard are best suited for gamers/collectors who like an army with huge amounts of infantry, supported by some of the most powerful tanks in the game.. as said above, they have good points and bad
good: tanks, combat doctrins, lots and lots and lots of infantry, which are cheap in points too
bad: basic weapons are crap unless u have loads of em= loads of infantry, basic guardsmen aren't the best fighters around either, very expencive army to buy and collect too.
i like them coz it means i can combine their rules with my chaos legion and cultist rules so i can field a legal traitor army consisting of both guard and chaos marines... mmm chaos marines with a basalisk and lemon russ at their disposal :D:evil:

You forgot the rough riders! I want commanders to be able to go on mounts though, then you can have a whole army of rough riders. Ah well.

the trick with the ig is to fill the heavy slots then worry about actually meeting the requirments. ( ie take 3 ordance weapons)
use rockets/auto cannons in the squads (sames points cost) depending on armor of the other army. always take the plasma gun in the sqauds too, best bang for the buck.
use the armored fist, the chimera you get is nice target :D
take a anti tank squad with the hq droping 3 las-cannons at the end of the deployment helps cover anything you might have missed at the start. also put las cannons in with the officer squads , and don;t take anything thing more than a JR officers its a waste of points in an IG army.
hope this helps some

Pfft, one flashlight is no threat, but 55 of them in a single Troop selection rapid firing in your direction is nothing to sneeze at.
My roommate has an IG army that lost 3 guardsmen total against one of his opponents at the Seattle GT... I believe it was against bugs.
3 leman russ tanks and several HB/autocannon squads as well as a few lascannons 2 turns later, only the carnifex was still standing.
The sheer volume of guardsmen is frightening as is the firepower they can hold. You only roll scatter for a battlecannon round, you don't have to roll to hit.
The marines are like a finely honed blade, whereas the guard is like the hammer and anvil.

Yeah not much else to be said here. Simply put Space Chicken, yes the IG are wonderful. They are hard to play though, and as a newbie to Warhammer 40k it will be challenging for you to learn how to cope with super armies like Chaos or Necrons, or regular Marines. They are the most contemporary army in appearence, and stress firepower over all else.

They're all right, but Eldar are better because I use them. :moose: Anyway, the Imperial Guard are mainly a tank army. If you can get the Cadian Force, they are better, I think. They are like Imperial Guard, but there are changed things and different units, like Sentinels and the elite Cadian Guard infantry.

Not just any kind of firepower, overwhelming amounts of heavy firepower.
I would definitely recommend having 2 lemans for marine and tank busting firepower. However, the points you save without having them can give you a few more heavy weapon squads. ;)
Also, the Basilisk is nothing to sneeze at with a max indirect fire range of 240" with the pie plate, you can plaster anything on the opposite side of the board with a pretty heavy hit.
One of the things you'll want to learn how to place is your HW squads with the HQ... fire support for anti-infantry role and HW squads and/or regular infantry squads for anti-tank.
Just because the enemy closes in on you, doesn't always mean you've lost the battle... if they enter combat, try to force the squad to run before your turn. This way, when your squad is broken (and hopefully they aren't within 3" of another squad for consolidation), mass rapid fire flashlights to bring the hurt.
A lasgun may only have a 1/3 chance of wounding a marine, but try 40 guardsmen rapid firing and I guarantee you will probably vape the rest of the enemy squad.
80 shots, avg 40 hitting, avg ~15 wounding. That's a lot of marine armor saves.
All else fails, PILE IN... you may not have strength, but in large groups, you have numbers. Beat thine enemy down with thy fist and butt of lasgun.
After all, as was written in the codex, "No general ever won a war who failed to take advantage of his enemy's weakness".

The Imperial Gaurd Infantry are not the best part of there army. The whole army is a basic sitback force. They have the best tanks of all the armies. The so called flashlights are not that bad.
