Hey.
I was going through the Games-Workshop web site when I stumbled upon this:
http://uk.games-workshop.com/40kuni...ery/default.htm
According to this, each regiment (?) of the Imperial Guard comes from another world. However, I read in a piece of fluff somewhere that all Imperial worlds must pay a tithe, which includes soldiers for the Space Marines and the Imperial Guard.
My question is: Has there been any reference anywhere as to how the humans from the various Imperial worlds get selected to each regiment (?) of the Imperial Guard? Does it deepened on the environment of the world they come from, the type of world it is, or based purely on individual ability?
Thanks in advance.

tithed regiments are trained in the military doctorine of there homeworld and sent into military service wherever they are needed
regular enlisted regimensts are voluntary but are treated the same
pdf or planetary defence forces are less well equipped useing only those weapons that can be readily avalible in there system theese guys are kinda the bench warmers of the ig
also a planets population and economic outlook are key when decideing on a tithe rate
example:
a fairly wealthy hive world like armageddon before the first war or like cirrenholm before the last chaos incursion. would supply more troops and weapons than say a pre gunpowder world or an agri world with a relitively low population
here are the exemptions
death worlds not enough population usually (catchan troops are special in this aspect)
adeptus worlds hey marines need recruits too
forge worlds all population is vital to building machines of war so why cut the workforce
shrine worlds holy places most population are adepts
and there you go if anyone has any more go ahead

I still don't think you answered my question.
As far as I understand it, there are two types of worlds: Worlds who's population are bred primarily as IG troops ( i.e. Cadia ) and most worlds, who every so often give a tithe to the Imperium which includes various candidates for IG and SM.
In regards to the "tithe worlds", how are the IG conscripts get selected into each regiment?
Example: let's say an Arctic world just paid it's tithe to the Imperium and handed over a certain amount of IG soldiers. Do they ( the soldiers ) get assigned into an existing regiment, such as the Valhallan? Or are they divided between all the regiments? Or do they form their own regiment, specifically for their homeworld?

I don't have my Codex handy, but I am pretty sure I am remembering this correctly: it is against recommended Imperial practice to stand up regiments that have members from different homeworlds. Tithe worlds do not contribute individual soldiers to off-world regiments, they make full regiments available to higher level commanders who may then use them off-world.
The reason for this is that the Imperium is such a widely varied place with so many different cultures, mixing up recruits from different worlds would work against unit cohesion. Imagine conscripts from a Hive world trying to figure out how to understand, let alone work with, conscripts from a feral world. So Regiments are raised with members coming from the same world. The only exception to this is wartime exigencies: existing regiments that get mauled in combat might be combined with others to make a full strength regiment.
Those are the rules for the Imperial Guard. Obviously things are a lot different for the Adeptus Astartes, Adeptus Mechanicus, etc. but those are very different organizations. The Space Marines have their own recruiting procedures that are unique to each chapter. There, a recruit's background is less important due to the extreme amount of "re-socializing" that recruits undergo.

That really cleared things up, thanks.

essentially the world will be tithed to provide X amount of regiments each reigiment will be called Yth Z where Y is the number of regiment created (if one is wiped out or retired its number is reused hence how the regiments get long standing reputations) and Z is the planet they are from hence the 125th Dromethians would have been the 125th active (assuming that the 125th hadnt been wiped out) regiment at the time of the creation of the regiment from the planet Dromethius say that the 34th regiment is retired (switch to colonising fleet essentially) then the next regiment to be created would be the 34th Dromethians. in a warzone then the best troops for the job will be sent this can result in different regiments and cultures fighting side by side however it is only at the upper levels that the regiments will interact, unless they take such bad causualties that they are forced to combine regiments to maintain operating effieciency.
Marines are a different kidney to become a marine one must prove himself
this takes different forms but is almost always through shows of physical prowess for the SW the wolf priests will take mortally wounded fighters that have fought well to be healed and inducted into the Chapter while the Ultramarines use a series of trials that face the competitors against one another for the honour of being inducted.
The plantary guard are the scraps of the guard they will generally be under manned regiments or regiments in training, remember that regiments very rarely retire the best realistically taht can be hoped for is that thery will be given colonisation rights to a planet that they have liberated.hence the planetary guard will also include these ex guardsmen especially if they have only recently conquered the planet
