I'm going to disagree. You should probably go Space Marines, cuz they're pretty straightforward and mostly easy to paint, but don't go Dark Angels. There are just way too many DA players (myself included). Do something different and cool and go Salamanders or White Scars or maybe even get really wild and go with a successor chapter. Seriously, you'd be the talk of the town. It's true.

I'd recommend Space Wolves but that would sorta negate the whole easy to paint benefit. Plus, they're not all that rare either.

whatever

ARGH, SO MANY PEOPLE SAYING PLAY SPACE MARINES, DONT. for one, every starting player pretty much goes space marines, so everyone has a space marine army and if they are plenty loaded or have been in the hobby for a while a second army on top of that. and tau rock anyway, atleast, they would if not everyone was space marines, for example, ten points for a model with 4+ to hit 2+ to wound and no save allowed against eldar but, 4+ to hit 3+ to wound and then a 3+ save against space marines, means its really irritating, tau have one of the best value for points basic units in the game and its negated by an army everyone has. A similar tactic is getting battlesuits behind squads then focusing fire so that they are either wiped out by shooting or fall back into the battlesuits and get wiped off the face of the table.

Plus it shows real character, if you play space marines you will end up rhino rushing, they all do, cause its easy to execute as well as effective (edit:: not so true with dark angels but still, they have ravenwing or deathwing, both of which get in your lines quickly) where as if you went tau you would need to use more tactics, people think they are a camping army, but if they played tau they would probably lose, they have really mobile troops and it is very much about positioning and knowing when and where to shoot. I may not make it sound appealing by saying its so hard to kill space marines but its still fun to play em, and you can get a really powerful army out of the tau because they are so interchangable with their weapons and can fill many rolls and many of them are very specified so fill only one roll but do it well.

Man i just went on about this way to much and if you habve already got the codices then it was all for nothing, but i hope i have given you a second side of this to think about.

::edit:: plus dont forget, they look sweet.

Although I'm a DA player, I think you should get the Codices first and read them. Read the rules and their background story ( I don't like the word fluff anymore ) and then decide.

For me it's more important that a player can, at least in certain parts, identify himself with his army. Not only: I'm playing it, because their rules make them some sort of superior.

That would be wrong in my opinion.

And when you've read the two codices and you go with one of the two, then you already know about one of your future enemies.

yeah, i agree by the way, it just sort of came out wrong because of the fact that im sick of the number of SM players, its really a matter of what you like, i was just kinda trying to get you to look at both sides.

Right. Before I started a DA army, I bought 9 different codices.
That gave me a good view about the WH40K background.
But I got to the game by playing the computer game Space Hulk ( Deathwing Terminators ). Later I played Space Crusade, but when I finished the Codices, I got back to the roots. So here I am, playing Dark Angels.

TAU RULES:D

Actually,Tau has:

1.Insanely powerful weaponary(Railgun Range 72" Str 10 AP1,Railgun submuniation Range 72" Str 6 AP4 Ordiance Blast,Pulse Rifle Range 30" Str/AP 5,etc),
2.Good savings(eg,Broadside save 2+,Crisis/Stealthsuit 3+,FW /Gun Drones 4+,Hammerhead Front 13,side/rear 11 or sth like that),and
3.Good shooting skills(all BS 3 and above except Gun Drones).
They can just mow down enemies from range. If you want something that can escape from their firepower, use Earthshaker(ie,use IG).But if you want to take advantage from CC,take DA instead.Tau alone are terribly bad in CC.

I don't know SM very well, but I'll prefer Black Templars, for that goddamn powerful LR Crusader:)

go with space marines to learn the rules and to get used to the game...

THEN BURN EVERY SPACE MARINE MODEL YOU HAVE AND GO WITH A DIFFERNT ARMY or convert them and play them as chaos marines :D:D:D:D:D

All i have to say is look at the model range, find ones that look appealing to you, and play them. There's no point getting an army if you are not going to enjoy painting them and how they look on the battlefield. :duck:

If you're young and short on cash go for a Space Marine army as they're small.

Tau armies aren't too big but they're still more expensive as it's more models.

i think you've come to the wrong place to ask this question. the right place would be that bodypart called your brain.

i would start by reading fluff(background) about races. There ought to be a few topics in this forum debating that. after that, go buy the codex of the race you like most and take a look at their models, you can also buy a box with some basic troops of that race and train painting them up. after that, decide how you want your force works. Will you go for massed Troops or take a smaller elite army? Or max out your speed?

The Dark Angels are a good army, but if you and a buddy are playing the DA and SW against someone else just be warned that the SW will charge you due to a special rule they have. This is also why I play Blood Angels. Six Dreadnoughs, Death Company, and Veteran Assult Marines what's not to love.

Space marines should be left for those with little money or those who are sheep. thats why you see so many sm armies around its not even funny. and how can you say tau are hard to paint. with the exception of kroot, the tau are one of the easiest to paint....and a bonus is that they look good aswell

The only thing I have to say is never start with a IG army because of the following: They have terrible scores, hardly any good units, lousy armour saves. I mean no offense to any of the IG players here but the only things they got going good for them is different regiments, Ogers, the Earth shaker cannon with Indirect Fire rule, and Commisars. The last downside I forgot to mention is that they are a pain to paint due to having to paint fifty-five models in all to have just a starting army.
