View Full Version : M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village"

OK, obviously since this is one of Mr. Shyamalan's films, we'll have to be extra-uber-careful with the spoilers and all, but...

Has anybody else seen this yet, and if so, what did you think?

The critics were a bit down on this, mostly it seemed because they didn't like the now-obligatory twist in the film. I have to say that I disagree with that, because I don't think the twist was the point of this film like it was in "The Sixth Sense."

Frankly, this is my favorite of his since "Sixth Sense," having been not horribly impressed by "Unbreakable" and never having seen "Signs" because I've already seen "Scary Movie 3." ;)

And now, for the equally obligatory:

I, personally, had formulated the opinion that maybe this movie was taking place on some sort of alien planet, where some group of colonists was trying to turn back time. Close, but no cigar. ;) I think, in a lot of ways, M. Night has painted himself into a writer/directorial corner... he HAS to have the twist, but since we all KNOW that, we're all going to do our best to figure it out beforehand, and people are going to be disappointed if it's not "good enough." He did a good job, I thought, of playing "Those We Do Not Speak Of" for fear even AFTER he had done his best to deflate them; although I do question the apparently "spare" suit underneath the floorboards of the "quiet room." Why, if you have a Village that's predicated on the idea of hiding in the basement from Those We Do Not Etc, would you hide ANYTHING under the floorboards? If anybody were to be locked in the Quiet Room when that alarm bell started ringing, wouldn't they be inordinately interested in the floor at that point? At any rate, I don't quite get why there would be a "spare" suit somewhere other than the Shed We Do Not Go Into, or whatever they called it. :)

That does seem to be trend... either the trailer shows the only good part(s) of the movie or they mislead you on the "plot" of the movie. On occasion if you see the trailer you already know the entire movie or the in the alternate find the movie was quite unrealted to the trailer. In either case it is the sign of a bad movie.

Well, judging from the fact that the box office take dropped by a full two-thirds this weekend from last weekend, apparently America by and large agrees with Adwight7's brilliantly argued critique...

Silver Falcon raises a good point--the movie that you get is well different from what the trailer has led you to expect. Trinity follows it up with an equally good point--these days, if a "trailer" hasn't shown you every funny line in the film in the case of a comedy, or given away a major plot point in the case of a drama, then it pretty much has to mislead you from what the film's actually about, and if that's what the trailer has to do, then what's the point of even making a trailer?

Don't you think Maragaret Peterson Haddix could sue the movie makers for stealing her idea from "Running out of Time"?

I seriously believe that movies should not be made FOR THE ENDING. They either should be full or nil, not made because of the darn twist at the end.

Thank god Night's next one isn't a horror film.
