I just went to EB Games and picked up my copy. Got home, immediately opened and went to install. It gave me an error saying something like it could not open the data1.cab and closed. I opened the data1.cab zip file and unzipped them along with the contents on that cd in a folder on the desktop. Tried to install again, got about half way through when it gave me another error which the popup didn't last long enough to see it and then it too closed....anyone else having problems with it installing? :(

Did you try it on onther PC? If it still gave the error then the media may be bad, if so go back for another copy.

I don't have another PC :(
I did notice when I opened it that the first disc was loose which scared me. When I took it out I saw very light barely noticable scratches hardly worth caring about on it. There were a couple of them but that shouldn't be the problem? Well in anycase, I'm going back right now to switch it as in I bought a NEW game so I want a NEW 1st disc :)
Hopefully that'll fix it.
Cuz I wanna play :rage:

Call the shop back and see if they have a PC to run the CD on or a friend, you have to try it on at least 1 more PC before you can be sure it is an error with the media or your PC.
Do a virus scan, spyware/adware scan, and a defrag then retry the install. This is while you try finding a 2nd PC to test the CD on.

Ooh .cab error rings a bell... iirc it was something to do with my ram :(
If you can take it to a mates or back to the shop so they can try it on their PC, try that.

I tried to continue that thread but there was no post/reply option. Well I went back to the store and switched out the 1st disc. The new one is perfect. I got home and tried again....same thing, it gave me an error and closed. The last post in the thread the guy said something about his ram...how the??? I do not have access to any other computer but my own that would meet the requirements...any suggestions? Oh and I turned off Norton, I am virus free, and just ran adware...didn't fix it.

You likely have something on your system that's causing a problem.
Try posting a log from http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt and we'll see what's running that you can't otherwise see.
Double Post
When you run the Hiijack this program, you can "Save the log". Once you save it, open the log file, then copy and paste it to here.

Pretty clean running system there actually. Have you tried shutting off Norton Ghost before you install?
Darktide
21st Sep 04, 10:14 AM
Ghost, no I haven't but I will disable it now. Hmm I don't have the ability to shut it off :(
Side note...does the fact that I have the Beta/Demo folders in the THQ directory mean anything, would that have something to do with it?
Anakaris
21st Sep 04, 10:22 AM
Well for XP. Ctrl + Alt + Delete brings up the Windows task manager. Click on the Process tab and look for whatever programs you need. Right click on them and choose "End Process". If you turn anything of that was needed just reboot.

Strange. Try using msconfig (Start>Run... type msconfig and hit enter)... go to the startup tab and turn everything off, then reboot and try again.

Did you try copying the entire CD to your hard drive and running the installer from there?
Darktide

yes, thats where I've been running it from. I would try the cd, but thats when I was getting the data1.cab error.
ÜberJumper
21st Sep 04, 10:55 AM
K, try this, copy the entire CD to the hard drive, DO NOT extract the data1.cab file, and try the install from the HDD. Make sure you clean out your temp directories, and if possible, uninstall the Beta and Demo.
Darktide
21st Sep 04, 11:10 AM
okay, now I'm starting to get mad...the uninstall file for the beta was missing? and wouldn't work so I used Windows add/remove to get rid of it and all that did was delete it from the add/remove list...all the files are still there. The demo won't uninstall either way, through the add/remove or its uninstall.
Double Post
Well I just deleted both beta/demo folders, deleted them from the startup menu, and went into Regedit and deleted all keys for them as well...they are gone except for the Demo, it remains in the add/remove list with no information and unable to remove it altho it is deleted from my system.

k, now try to install again from CD copied to HDD.
I'm thinking the bug tracker may be on a diff CD which may be why you're getting the error. With the new CD it probably wouldn't hurt to run the install from CD.
Darktide
21st Sep 04, 11:22 AM
Well I've tried uninstalling both the Beta and the Demo, I've turned Ghost/Antivirus off, run adware, I've worked msconfig, restarted...copied the entire cd, I think I'm running out of options :(
Still the game refuses to get past the bugreport.exe which is about 40% into the first cd. This is the same spot I get to on both install discs (first one being scratched) and still neither of them worked. I tried sending THQ an email and will have to wait up to 48 hours for a response. I don't know what is going on here. Beta worked great, the Demo was awesome...why won't the ACTUAL GAME WORK?
Double Post
With the new CD it probably wouldn't hurt to run the install from CD.
That didn't help, it never even started to install :(
ÜberJumper
21st Sep 04, 11:23 AM
Well, it's definately weird... there may be some corrupt installer files that have been lodged in the c:\windows\installer folder.
You *could* try temporarily removing all of those files in that directory, and then try installing again.

k, all of these things need to be temporarily disabled.

This is the only one I was unable to stop in msconfig, but I did find N Antivirus Auto Protect Services in Services and stopped it...trying again

Just go into the program manager and end those processes.
I had already suggested shutting down the CTsvcCDA.exe
I have Norton Antivirus active and it installed fine so that shouldn't be a problem. But shut it down anyways to check.

Okay, I took everything in msconfig off and ended all those processes, the windows/installer files have been temp moved and I tried with both the cd and hd cd and still same errors occur. :(

You still have the navapsvc.exe process running, along with the MMC, and the msiexec.exe... what had you just done when you posted that log?

There is another computer in the house but it wouldn't even come close to meeting the requirements, and besides this isn't the original cd...I went back to the store and got a new one cuz the orig was scratched.
I didn't do anything since hijack, I had Task Manager (msconfig) and Services running, I'll shut them down and make another log

Try installing it (sure it won't play, but it should install) on the other PC. That will rule out bad media if the problem is with the media... hopefully, if the media is good, that other pc doesn't have issues.

On the other PC right? Which means there's something on your system that is causing a problem... it could be your CD Rom drive.
Is the other PC on the network? If so, you could quite possibly share it's CD Rom drive out and install from there.

Well... clearly there's something on your system which is causing the problem. It'd be great to identify a fix that doesn't involve re-formatting windows, especially when reformatting might not fix it (it could be something silly still).
Try to get norton shut off completely (perhaps even uninstall it temporarily) as it was still running during your last install.
Darktide

I cannot get it temporarily shut off and I do not want to uninstall it because I cannot find the install cd for Norton Antivirus.

The CDs weren't the problem here Wo0dy. He's got some kind of software conflict on his system.
Do the same thing I suggested he do, open MSCONFIG, and do a diagnostic startup. When it reboots after the diagnostic startup, try to install it, then turn off the diagnostic startup, and reboot again, then try to play.

I have the same issue, it gets through the installation entirely save for the last file which is the shared textures file. The game works if you run it, just nothing has textures. I tried installing it on another machine on the network to perhaps try and transfer that file, but it had the same issue. Took it to a third machine on the network, same issue smae final error.
Checked the status of the CD, it's fine, no scratches and whatnot.

Hey Uber, I tried the diagnostic option and it wouldn't even begin to install either way, it gave me a runtime error.

I've deactivated everything, it boots naturally in a bare bones setup. I tried copying the compressed file directly from the CD and it gave me an error of the checksum being invalid.
May be a damaged CD, but it's nothing obvious.

Try doing a selective startup, and uncheck all of them.
Double Post
Angry:
If I were you, I'd try to get the CDs replaced.

I tried the selective startup with nothing selected and that still didn't help, again runtime error...never started to install.

Try just with System Services on... that'll probably load the norton service... you could actually just try stopping the norton services in the administrative tools>services in the control panel.

I've tried that before and it didn't work

Bah, if you had your install CD for norton, you could just uninstall it.
Hmmmm HOW ABOUT THIS!
COPY the entire installation folder from the other machine, to your machine.
You'll likely need to create the registry entry for the CD key by hand, but that *might* work.

I'm just gonna uninstall antivirus and buy a copy of 2004 thursday...but there is one problem, norton and windows uninstall option requires the install cd to UNINSTALL??? WTF

That's so lame eh? GG Norton :-/
Hopefully that'll be the fix... if you can get it uninstalled.
