View Full Version : Can't connect to Gamespy lobby
Silas
27th Sep 04, 8:41 AM
Here's the scenario:
Click multiplayer, click online, try and register my name, and I get the following message:
Couldn't connect to the lobby system, check your internet connect, and, if you have them, your firewall and your router.
Now, I've found that I could connect to the degree to get my name registered. I verified this by downloading GameSpy arcade, punching in my email address, and it found the ID I registered with Warhammer. So I can connect to the server that handles creating logins.
In the Warnings log, the following error occurs from my trying to connect:
GSCHAT - ciSocketConnect - couldn't connect to peerchat.gamespy.com, error 10053
I have done the following things to try and make this work but to no avail:
Disabled Windows Firewall (I have XP w/ SP2)
For my router (Linksys WRT54G) I have enabled port forwarding for the following ports:
UDP 6500
TCP 6667
UDP 27900
UDP 27901
TCP 28910
TCP 29900
TCP 29901
UDP 29910
TCP 29920
UDP 6112
I have also tried adding myself to the DMZ
I have tried connecting on two different networks with two different ISPs
I can ping peerchat.gamespy.com
Someone help, I'm so frustrated since multiplayer is the reason I bought this game to begin with. :(

Post your full warnings.log file please after a failed connection attempt.
Are you at school? Does your school block port 6667?

One of the two networks I tried to connect from was at a university. I'm not sure if they block port 6667. However, the other network, the one I'm actually going to be playing on, was at my apartment with a cable modem. My ISP is Cox. Below is the full warnings log. I tried to connect three times so that the error would be apparent.

Here's some information that may help...
http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/WSK-19980702-EM02.htm
Do you have any firewall software running, including the firewall from XPSP2?
Can you try to connect to IRC irc.hwcommunity.com/dawnofwar (irc://irc.hwcommunity.com/dawnofwar) ? (Uses port 6667)

I clicked the link and I get the standard page cannot be displayed error message. If thats the problem, how do I get around it? I've tried adding the port to the exceptions list on my Windows Firewall. I've tried disabling Windows Firewall (Admin Tools->Services->Windows Firewall (Stopped and disabled service). The port may very well be blocked by my university, but on my router (at home, different network and ISP than school), I've enabled the port, tried putting myself in the DMZ, and even directly hooked my computer into the cable modem unit. All with the same result.

You may have a virus or something that's taking up that port... try http://housecall.trendmicro.com

That website didn't detect a virus. I also just tried uninstalling SP2 and came up broke once more :( What should I do now? I'm all out of ideas.

Thanks for chugging along on this with me. I downloaded it, deleted the xfire file, restarted, and it still doesn't work. I'm pasting the new log for hijackthis as well as the WH40K warnings log I just created.

Gah, you've got something on your system that's blocking that outbound port...
Try going back into MSconfig, go to the services tab, and look for all non-Microsoft Services and shut them off.

Buddy, I wish I could tell you, but I'm not certain. Not all of the non-MS services were running, and I turned off all the ones that were. I didn't test one at a time. But, I will list all the non-MS services I have. I'm sure you can make an educated guess.
Ati HotKey Poller
Broadcom ASF IP monitoring service v6.0.3
Iap (Manufacturer: Dell Computer Corp)
McAfee Framework Service
Network Associates McShield
Network Associates Task Manager
WLTRYSVC (Manufacturer: Unknown)
Thanks again, lemme know which one you think was the culprit.

It'd be great if you could turn them on one at a time to rule them out (or turn half on, rule them out, turn the other half on, etc).
The last entry, WLTRYSVC, is associated with a wireless network. Do you have a Belkin card installed?

It was the McAfee stuff. I have a school issue laptop. Those programs apparently have a degree of a firewall in them, and I do not even have the priviledges to view that stuff. I do, however, I have the priviledges to turn them off :) Thanks again
