View Full Version : Did DoW make you start playing the WH40K TT game?

Been playing the TT game since 2 years before DoW, but I wanna know if GW made WH40K the TT game more popular because of DoW.

this is probably the most un-scientific place to hold this poll since people on this site most likely are interested in DoW. It gives a strong bias towards the game in the poll.

Well, I can honestly say I had been out of the game for about 6 months till I played Dawn of War. It got me back into the universe and I pulled out some old models I never assembled and painted. I'm also starting to catch up on Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 sourcebooks. So yeah Dawn of War brough me back to the game after being away for awhile.

Ditto. DoW for me is what WH40k TT should be about, minus the annoying setting up and arguing over the rules. I'm currently trying to find my old marines and actually finish the army I started 8 years ago.
been playin TT for almost 8 years.
after chaos gate ive always wanted a true computer experience of warhammer. Like just the ideas and the universe.
DoW delivers.

I bought DoW looking for a good rts, and from what I hear the TT game is alot better...
I am interested in just painting though, so I probably won't play in any tournaments or anything.

Been playing 40K and WFB for many years. DoW acts as a fix for my habit when I can't get a chance to play.

I wanted to get DOW because of the TT, but that won't happen anytime soon :(
I wonder if my constant complaining will make this game come out for Macs faster...

I was playing long before I knew about DoW.

The WH40K TT game (well, the whole GW universe) made me start playing DOW ;)
Although I do admit it's revived my motivation for lead figures a bit. Which is nice.

I'm starting to think that GW is making alot more than copyrights funding off DoW.
Anyways, it got me interested in the TT game again, but for the same purposes as before. Namely modelling and painting more than actually playing.

Yeah, for my entire Warhammer (both games) career its just basically been me eating up the fluff and painting models. This is due primarily to the fact that noone in West Virginia plays or sells this game. Sure, every once in awhile a store will pop up but it dies within a couple months. Tis a sad state of affairs and something I wish could be corrected. Maybe I could gather alll the players together and form some kind of society...

I decided to get back into TT after not playing for about 5 years. Before, I played Eldar and Chaos, but I'm going SM this time. I ordered the SM Battle Force ($56.00 on Ebay!!!) and have been experimenting with a color scheme. I'm leaning toward patterning my army after the Blood Ravens. I've got to find out how to do decals or make a template to do the shoulder pads.
I've been doing warhammer and warhammer 40k for about 10 years. I started when I was really young, so I've been seriously into it for about 7 of those years. The only reason I got DoW was becasue I knew TT rock.(And the fact that older Relic games are brilliant, ofcourse)

DoW Got me Hooked on the TT but Hell! im 13 and its really hard to get a decent job for such a young person, anyway im woking my ass off everyday just to get an Imperial Guard set :argh: :argh: :argh:
But first ill have to find a GW store.

Dow made me personally want to start playing the TT, but the cost forced me to the remove Rome:Total War, Knights of Honor and another game I can't remember from my Christmas list just to buy an Iron Warriors squad, two Defilers, Abaddon the Despoiler and matching paints. Grrrr these models cost so much. But i'm quite sure it'll hook me: hell, even my MOTHER was interested in buying some and playing! Plus the (expensive) models look reaaaaaly cool. 'Tis a feast for yon eyeballs and associated nerve endings.

Yeah, they are pretty hefty in the price range. Once you get them painted and start using them though they will more than prove their value. Sure, it may cost a bunch now but you can play with these guys for years and have a blast.

Dawn of War definitely got me playing (or learning) the TT. I already had the paints available from playing WF, and I promised myself to make a 500 point Witchhunter army only...

Somewhat, I'd known about Warhammer and WH40K for a long time, and one of friends is into the 40KTT, so one day I decided I might be interested in starting an army, looked around the GW web site, saw the image of the 4 lumbering imperial guard tanks baring down on the orks and said to myself, "that's my army."

Playing dawn of war inspired me to get into the tabletop game seriously, I cant beleive that I first pay £35 for DOW then see it for only £17.99 so I lost money there and now Ive gone and spent around £200 cos of DOW on models, paints and brushes. :argh:
Damn it is a good game :D

I started cos I fell in love with my friend's models. I went out and bought a starter pack and realised that I couldn't paint nearly as well!
Nope, but I have to admit it got me interested. If all of you guys send me some money, I'll start an army. I accept cheques and mony order.

Back when I was at school (6 or 7 years ago) I used to collect Blood Angels, but gradually ran out of time and stopped collecting and playing.
When I got Dawn of War it reminded me I had all my old second edition stuff up in the loft, so I got it all down and gave it to a mate of mine who collects 40K.
Now, however, I'm thinking of getting back into 40K again, realized I'm spending way too much money on computer/console games, so I'm going to cut down on those.
Planning to start it up in a couple of weeks so I can spend some money on those, and from what I remember it used to take me forever to paint so it should certainly keep me enterained as another hobby without spending as much as I used to on games.
(As a bonus it means I will also save more money, yay)
Thinking of trying something different this time around and maybe collecting Chaos, or maybe Tyranids.
I'll probably pick up that starter set the Battle of Macragge (I think) which gives me some SMs which Ican easily mod to be Chaos, and some Tyranids to see if I like them, so all is good :)
Mind you, saying that...I may just collect Blood Angels again, I love(d) them so much and the whole Emperor/Imperium thing just really appeals to me.
So basically..er..DoW is getting me back into 40K. Soonish, when I get a little cash (bloody credit card bills.)

Almost. First bought the 40k starter box thing about 11 years back, bought one squad of blood angels but only painted half of them, then got bored :argh: . DoW's renewed my interest again though, I've bought the Eldar codex (best models imo), maybe I'll actually collect enough models to play this time :D
DOW ressurected my interest in paining the minis, I never got around to playing the TT. :)

why in godsname is a piece of plastic/metal so expensive
I think I might have some answers.
1) So they can host the tournments and conferences
2) To keep the website up
3) To create some new models and codexes
4) ...Well the guys working at the local Games-Workshop and such needs a little medicare :)
But as for me getting into Warhammer 40k, it was a couple of years ago that I went to a mall a good 5 hours away. I stumbled into a GW shop thinking they where selling video games...but sadly, there where no video games to be found, only expensive, cool looking miniutures. One of the employees there introduced me to the game and we played a small skirmish between SM and Kroots. I remember my rolls that day were craptastic but I managed to take a few of them chickens down with I think one or two casualties on my SM side ( :( yes very sad). He was very into it, he exaggerated on one of his chickens getting wounded. "Ok so that roll means one of my units will get wounded. So its like a bullet comes and shatters the aliens should... and it goes SPLASHHCCCC." He also showed me the old starter kit, the one with the SM and DE. He did a good job "brainwashing" me. He got me hooked on WH ever since. It was a shame I didnt bring alot of money with me though, I only got a 5 man SM squad w/ a little can of Ultramarines Blue. But still it costed me 20 bucks. Dats alot!

yes some time ago i also walked into a store and played a game to introduce me.. some fat geek guy showed it to me, a small match of sm versus eldar. I choose sm and i won, i thought it was interesting cause i had done some modelling of airplanes and so on.. But when my mom and I saw the price of the boxes we quickly left the store. I was younger then and I can afford some warhammer stuff now without too much a problem, but it also turned out the store was way overpriced. It had a monopoly in the area where i came from, but i've heard another store has bin opend up so im checking that coming week or so. First of all to check if the prices are roughly about the same as in the online warhammer store.. say a box of 20 dollars would be 17 euro, which means i see that box for 40 euro's something's wrong. If the prices are right i think i'll by a box of cadian shock troopers cause they really appeal to me. Any suggestions?

I got into the TT game when I was about 8 or so, and first started collecting Space Marines. I would never have a huge army of them, I only got new ones at Christmas or for my birthday. Before long, I started getting bored of SMs and switched to Tyranids. This was in 2nd edition. They. Were. Fantastic. I loved them, and if the second edition rules were still being used then that's who I would use. Then third edition came out, and they were completely and utterly nerfed. In second edition, versus Space Marines, getting the Tyranids into combat was the only challenge. When you got even 5 genestealers into close combat, the game was won. I personally saw 5 genestealers rip through over 50 space marines in one game - that's how good they were. With a squad of 5 genestealers in combat with 10 marines, you got something like 30 D6 rolls, every 2 or higher kills a marine. Then third edition came out, and they were completely and utterly nerfed. 5 genestealers in close combat meant you got something like 5 D6 rolls, needing 3 or higher to kill a marine, AND they got a saving throw. IMO Tyranids were unplayable in the third edition army list in the rulebook. So I started collecting Dark Eldar, but quickly moved onto Orks. WONDERFUL. MY DREAMS. ORKS = TEH WIN. Amazing conversions, amazing army, amazing style, and bloody great to play. I stuck with them for what must have been a full year. They were bloody fantastic.
But then the axe fell. GW raised their prices YET AGAIN. When 40k third edition had first come out, the squad box sets were £10. They raised the prices to £15. This was ridiculous. I'd just started level design for Half-Life, and decided that level design was a much better hobby, thanks very much.
After several years of being away from the hobby, and apparently a fourth edition being brought out, I'm considering taking up the WAAAAAGH once more. But the prices are too much. For the price of a squad of boyz, I can have a damned good night at the pub next to college.

I started TT from the roleplaying version of warhammer along time ago well actually like 7 or 8 years ago but still fun, ive mainly been for Chaos or the nids, but within the last few years ive been using chaos.
But i've played all the warhammer + (40k) related comp games but not rite of war cause i was not interested by that.
But i think DoW could be a good thing to encourage but im not sure if they can scrape the TT costs of the minies.

"But the prices are too much. For the price of a squad of boyz, I can have a damned good night at the pub next to college."
I always use that arguement, except the other way around! It's how I justify spending so much on the hobby. From each box I spend an evening gluing it together, and about 5 or 6 painting it. Then I get more enjoyment from gaming with it as well. Better value than going to the pub. Of course, my dad pointed out the flaw in my arguement: I go to the pub as well.

2 days ago i checked out the local warhammer store.. rediculous prices, say 27 euro for a simple box.. i already saw the guys with glasses chatting about their armies.. i quickly ran out of the store. I'd rather have a couple a beers then a piece of plastic for 27 euro.. the idea is good, but come on.. its just too expensive

reading all these posts really brought me back. thanks.
i started painting miniatures about 1978-79, ral partha D&D guys -- all bright gold armor (glopped on yellow). had a total blast doing it. took a break for several years till I got into WHFB 1st edition. the big break for that one was when Ravening Hordes came out, pretty much the first army list book -- and i accumulated a decent size skaven rathorde.
WH40K came out a bit later, and I bought a few random guys, the kind you can only find on Ebay now. when the first Space Marine box set came out ($20 for 30 plastic marines), my buddy and I each bought one, and mangled the hell out of them, so I switched to Eldar and had the Rainbow Force -- each guy with a different color scheme. Good times, back when you could get 18 Harlequins for $20, all metal...
Quit about 89-90 somewhere in there. DoW got me painting again, to my wife's eternal horror. Still haven't played a game, but in the last two months, I've bought 1 crisis suit, a 4 man stealth team, 3 pathfinders, 18 firewarriors, the Battle for Macragge box, and have a Tau battleforce on the way. So far, only the stealths and the pathfinders are painted, but they're better than I would have thought after a 15-odd year break.
The wife is gonna be PISSED when she gets back into town and sees the Tau army, not to mention the 'Nids *hehe*
and, for the record, I still go to the pub also (though we call them 'bars' here in the Colonies)

Badzen, nice story, great to hear you're back into it again becuase of Dawn of War...just like me :)
You should name a special unit or something after your wife, she might give you a break because you've been thinking of her while painting :D
If anyone read my post a bit back I've been wanting to get back into it, and finally this week I did (or rather over the weekend) picked up myself a Battle for Macragge set which I've been buggering around with.
Needed that to help me decide which army to collect (decided on Space Marines in the end, because at least I know them) already planning to collect Orks, then Imperial Guard (lots of tanks, yay) then Eldar after a decent sized SM force are done...I'm going to be busy.
Also got on order a SM Codex and a painting set (should have bought it with the boxset so I could have started painting then but saw it cheap on ebay the day before I went into town.)
After I've painted up all the stuff in the Macragge set, which I've never been good at, heres hoping I've magically got better in the 7 years since I last tried, I'll pick up a whole bunch of SM stuff...I have no diea what I should really get, so waiting until the codex arrives and tells me what sort of thigns I should have in my army :)
Anyway, rambling over, off to work soon *sigh*

I collected 40k for about a year or so after my 13th B'day. Never played many matches though and had a huge army of BloodAngels gathering dust. DoW rekindled my love of 40k so I joined my school's Warhammer 40k club.
I kinda got a 100% loss rate though from loadsa matches...
