View Full Version : Connection... success?

As many people have been posting about connection problems through a router, me included, I thought I'd just mess around and try and see if I could get anything to work.

As a little background, I had already tried every suggestion between here and Gamespy to try and get anything to work (port forwarding, DMZ, etc). None of these provided me with a stable fix. I say stable because I could connect to a few games, but not the majority.

So, today I reset all my settings on my router to see if it made a blind bit of difference. Essentially, it removed all port forwarding and any special IP setup. To my surprise, the third game I tried to connect to, allowed me to join! The game played out correctly (3v3, we won :D) with no suggestion of there being anything wrong.

I would thereby conclude that all the fiddling with my router made no blind bit of difference and I'm still getting this scenario of a low success ratio, but some success rather than none.

I asked the host what their connection type was, and they informed me they were on a direct link with no Router or NAT involved. My router is a Netgear DG834G, and my suspicion is that it appears to be presently compatible with Gamespy's UPnP technology (at least for joining games to direct hosts).

I would like to run some tests to see if I am able to join games based on my host’s connection as direct or indirect. If anyone has any other experiences with "temperamental" joining or just wants to help me try out different configurations, post here.

PS. I apologize if anybody feels this belongs in an existing thread; without the search function I'm at a loss to find relevant information.

It's fine as it's own thread.

Check the Beta forums down in archive (not sure if you can see them or not), there's some posts about Netgear routers in there.
