View Full Version : The 'Spooge Driver' Problem

Good day, I recently purchased a copy of Warhammer 4K: DOW and have been having problems with the 'Spooge Driver'. Upon searching various forums and sites I've found very few people who can actually be bothered to reply [or reply properly] to my query as I realise that this is a common fault, it seems that as soon as some people see the word 'Spooge' they completely switch off as I imagine they must get sick of seeing the same threads on the same subject.

I understand that the 'Spooge' error has something to do with an inferior graphics/video card but I'm unsure how to properly varify my problem, I've run the warnings.log file which comes up with the following:

I've also tried running the dxdiag.txt file but as I'm running WinXP I don't get the same printed list everyone else seems to have, my search merely produces a 'DirectX Diagnostic Tool' which makes finding the information I need all the more difficult.

According to the tool I'm running the most recent version of DirectX which was what the Warning Box [that popped up after I tried to run the game post-installation] said was the most likely problem.

I understand that this probably doesn't provide much information but if theres any way I can provide more information to help you to help me please reply here and I'll try to be of assisitance.

Post your dxdiag.txt file.

(Start>Run... dxdiag, and enter, then save all information).

The spooge driver error simply means that your video card (or card's drivers) are not compatible with the game.

I'm not sure if you can tell anything about my Motherboard with that information but could you recommend me a videocard that would at least be compatible with that and the game. Ta.

You are trying to run the game using a TNT2M64 card with 16mb of video ram. This is a ~4+ year old video card that was underpowered at time of release (note: someone can correct me if im wrong, but I dont think its going to run DOW too well). Time to upgrade!

Video card reccomendations:

Any of the current ATI or Nvidia range will do well (x800/6800 series) however they are pricey. If you are on a budget, pickup an ATI 9600XT/9800Pro/9800XT, I would stay away from the nvidia equivalent the FX 5XXX series, however their more recent cards are great.

It's not capable of running DoW. A new video card is needed.

Your whole system looks like it needs an upgrade.

First off, your CPU is below min spec.

Your memory is below min spec.

Your video card is below min spec.

I suggest seriously considering an overall system upgrade, at the minimum, at least 512MB more memory, and whatever your budget allows for video card.

Your MX4000 graphics card *should* run the game no problems. Your issue is that your original on board graphics card is still being detected.

You need to disable that in the system control panel applet in the device manager, leaving only the MX4000 running.

I took a look at that but it does say that the device is disabled (code 22)!!!!!

well, i went into the device manager and like and idiot went to the monitor which said my on board WAS disabled but then took a look at display adaptors (which i should've done the first time but i'm not too hot with computers!) and disabled it there....weird though as it never caused problems with other games like rome total war....oh well.....
